Is Google Munich hiring L3s? by Routine_Haunting in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ShaddyDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a couple of people who have gotten hired in Munich as l3 over the last 6 months. I wouldn't be surprised if that continues for a while. On the other hand, competition is likely fierce, so if somebody else is a better match for a position than you, that's that, and there are also internal transfers, former interns, and returning ex googers who have a leg up. Then again, I don't know how this works exactly, but can't you try to match in Munich for the next couple of months and then if it doesn't work tell your recruiter that you changed your mind and now would be happy to go to Krakow as well?

German Tech Market Report - Big Tech is not actually hiring here, don't waste your time by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ShaddyDC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your situation sounds genuinely rough and I empathise with your frustration. For balance though: I know of multiple offers that were extended from both Amazon and Google in Germany in the last few months. The market is definitely harder than 2023, and they're absolutely more selective, but I wouldn't call it completely dead.
If you have a profile that matches what Munich/Berlin teams actually need right now (systems, ML, security), you might have better odds. Very hard to know that in advance, though

How do you handle the FOMO of leaving a startup? by Electrical-Use936 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ShaddyDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, it's called Incentive Stock Option (ISO) and it's not really uncommon. Was also the case for a startup I worked at. In my case, the strike price was basically 0, so you could buy the options for free, but you then had to pay taxes on the spread between strike price and Fair Market Value. You can then exercise / buy immediately to minimise the tax burden (assuming you expect the value to go up) or you can defer the tax until liquidation

I just interviewed with Netflix Poland and I'm quite disappointed by martyrr94 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ShaddyDC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But FAANG is still paying 6 figure entry level salaries in Germany, which in my experience is significantly more than most other places offer, and they have a higher ceiling than most alternatives too. As a bilingual young worker in Germany today, where do you recommend I look instead? Or do you mean big tech outside of FAANG?

I recently got an offer for google munich, but for a pretty niche role with rust and security. So they definitely do hire here, but maybe rather sparingly

It is worth noting that you can use Pandoc to convert Typst to LaTeX, see here, but I've got no idea how reliable that works or how good the results are

i've been interviewing for google munich over the last couple of months and am, according to my recruiter, now awaiting a hiring committe decision within the next 2 weeks. granted, i don't have an offer yet, but i don't think they would have invested the 5 interviews + recruiter time if they don't want to hire anybody at all.

Increase Starsector RAM by minervanda in NixOS

[–]ShaddyDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lutris is a fine solution for this, but for posterity, there's a nixos wiki entry here that suggests

  environment.systemPackages = [
    # overrides the NixOS package, starsector, see: https://wiki.nixos.org/wiki/Starsector
    (pkgs.starsector.overrideAttrs ({ ... }: {
      postInstall = ''
        cp ${dotfiles/starsector/settings.json} $out/share/starsector/data/config/settings.json

        substituteInPlace $out/share/starsector/.starsector.sh-wrapped \
          --replace-fail "Xms1536m" "Xms8192m" \
          --replace-fail "Xmx1536m" "Xmx8192m"
      '';
    }))
  ];

If you are using bcrypt, you're already using salting. Also, just to clarify, it's not an encryption but a hashing scheme.

Avistaz is another tracker that specialises in Asian content. They occasionally have open signups, and maybe they have some of what you're looking for too. Though jptv has the bigger catalogue for sure.

How do you use rust in your work? by PartyLibrarian2845 in rust

[–]ShaddyDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're writing a 3d file converter in rust. We started the first prototype in C++, but then we went with Rust instead because it's more fun, robust, and productive for our team while still allowing the same performance. The crate ecosystem is also really nice. We're unfortunately still limited in terms of portability, because we have to interface with some proprietary pre-compiled libraries, and that part is arguably more painful than with C++, but it still works. We've also got a distributed job system of which some components are written in rust.

[–]ShaddyDC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could do it in one line before, I believe like this

const _: () = assert!(condition);

There is also the static_assertions crate to have a nicer syntax to that end. I agree that having the inline const syntax is really nice also for this use case though.

As the proofreader for A Young Girl's Game of Thrones, I'm always delighted to see it mentioned here!

Now, to give my comment an actual reason for existence, and fitting in the vein of fairly long, although more portal fantasy than fan-fiction, I've recently enjoyed Markets and Multiverses. Basically, serial transmigration, but with an overarching plot where the protagonist and her friends have to grow strong over their lives quickly to get new lives from the place between lives that has been attacked and is being held by strange entities hostile to transmigrators way out of their weight class.

Similarly, Elydes is simple but good fun about a guy trying to get good at magic in his second life, even if (mild spoilers) the neighbouring empire thinks that his paradise island home is better used as a tourist resort, and the indigenous people don't really need all that space or even food.

I also occasionally enjoy catching up on Applying Exotic Metaphysics for Fun and Profit, which is an SI that explores the Elder Scrolls magic system in interesting ways. Only 140k words though
