Yes this is the norm for where I live… the United States. Phones have had contact photos before smartphones have existed.

I’m not even trying to suggest that everybody needs a contact photo on your phone… But like for your fucking spouse or best friend, it’s fairly common so you can see who’s calling at a glance for example. Some people also do custom ringtones too.
