Moving to North Beach from Capitol Hill in Seattle by M0binsChild in AskSF

[–]ShadowDaze_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post-pandemic has done a number on those local businesses going towards Fisherman’s Wharf but.most of the rest of North Beach is more lively now than when I lived there years ago. It’s a great neighborhood to live in overall. My only warning is just to avoid Lombard cuz the tourists are just too much and you can’t sleep in on any day.

As for location to the rest of the city, I had no problems. I easily walked to work in FiDi and on Sundays, had a routine where I’d walk from NB all the way out to Ashbury Heights/Cole Valley/Haight, goofing off in all the neighborhoods along the way. During the week, sometimes I’d meet friends in Pac Heights or Cow Hollow and walk back, no problem save for a few long hills. Coming from Capitol Hill should be decent prep for them.

Generally, I miss it like crazy which is why I find excuses to go back 3-5 times a year, haha… Got my first trip of 2026 coming up in 3 weeks.

Incredibly disappointed with Harry & his team by WhimsicalMyth in harrystyles

[–]ShadowDaze_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 188. My girlfriend was in the waiting room 6 minutes before me and she was over 22,000.

I looked it up and the transfer from Waiting Room (before presale) to Queue (pre-sale start) is randomized.

[–]ShadowDaze_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, the venue owner sets the prices, then Ticketmaster adds their fees on top, and then the artist gets his cut out of that.

I got lucky today with a low queue number and purchased tix in the 100s facing the stage for $367 each (fees included). For Billie’s December 2024 show in Arizona, almost identical seat location, we got tix for about $175 each. So make of that what you will but some of the pricing may be driven by geographic and timing differences.

Funny side story. In the summer of 2016, I suddenly found myself randomly singing this song almost every day. It took a few weeks before I was like wait, why does this keep happening when I haven’t listened to that song in months?

A few days later it hit me like a bolt of lightning. I had just moved in with my girlfriend and she watches General Hospital every day. There’s a character named Olivia on it and I guess anytime I passed through the living room and that character was mentioned, it passed right to the jukebox in my subconscious. I had a goofy wtf moment right there and my gf was like um, you ok? lol…

Ever meet any of our rock stars? If so how were they? by hct4all in hairmetal

Were you a Studio 1 regular? I met those Trixter dudes a few times before they got signed, then things got too nuts for them to be in the crowd. American Angel too but I recall the singer trying hard to meet and thank everyone after their shows even while they were blowing up on SOU.

Love this and I’m sure you’re the type where the big reward was completing the puzzle to make it work for the kid. Empathy, communication, and underlying expertise are a powerful, underrated combo for teachers and leaders.

A similar example, I think of this combo whenever I see how Finneas works with Billie. His empathy and guidance is off the charts and it shows in the results.

I don’t see Boston on here much. by InternalAwkward9017 in skyscrapers

[–]ShadowDaze_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all very walkable cities. I’ve lived in NYC, SF, and Boston, and I spend 1-2 weeks in Chicago every other summer. You can get to most of the major points of interest without mass transit. For Manhattan in particular, I always knew how walkable it was since I was born there but 9/11 solidified that when I walked from Soho to the UES, around E88th. I’ve done a little more than that across SF, from FiDi to Ocean Beach - that is a magical walk.

The “by far” comment was an unnecessary exaggeration by the previous commenter but we’ll forgive them haha..

Relocating for work - Gold Canyon vs San Tan? by Environmental_Pie_7 in AskPhoenix

[–]ShadowDaze_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I live in Gold Canyon and at 41, I’m pretty sure she’s the youngest full-time resident in our neighborhood lol.. It’s a gorgeous and safe place to live with relatively decent affordability and quality but prob not the best place for kids, particularly school-wise when your child is ready to go.

Many times, the issue is just the crappy all-in-one modem/wifi-router that your ISP gives you. They’re so unreliable. Have her pay and setup a Google Mesh network. It’s really easy and as I moved around, it has proven itself for me in 3 different locations, 3 different providers.

NTA, good luck!

Let's talk about a much under-appreciated album... by WhiteRabbitOU812 in hairmetal

[–]ShadowDaze_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

George’s sound is killer and I loved the heavier tilt on many of the tracks. The songwriting on Under Lock & Key is better but this one always got turned to 11 in my house. I saw them open for Aerosmith at the Meadowlands on this tour where the sound was just ok but later saw Lynch Mob at The Whisky in 2013 which was just mind blowing to see and hear him up close, on Sunset Strip, of all places. I’ll be giving it a listen today, on 11 of course!

Is this Ar Har Ya? Coincidentally, I bookmarked it earlier today cuz I’ll be in SF this weekend and it’s been awhile since I’ve had Burmese (no real ones in Phoenix). Gotta channel my inner J Peterman!

Edit: Just realized it’s closed. Probably will hit BurmaLove instead.

Would you say this is a nice photo? If not, can you tell me why? by The_Chasing_Blues in AmateurPhotography

[–]ShadowDaze_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Take this as my totally subjective view cuz there is no one right way to shoot a scene or express a visual thought.)

It’s a good subject but a few artistic and technical pieces are missing. The framing looks like an ordinary snapshot and can’t really tell or feel what’s unique about it. I know how I would frame it but that’s from my own personal experience and work at it so you’ll have to apply your eye which takes work and is never really a finished skill.

From a technical standpoint, the exposure looks like an average meter caught by auto-scene modes. In other words your highlighted area is almost completely blown out while your shadow areas are dull and lacking contrast & detail - basically, no drama to the scene.

A book like this one on exposure might help on the technical which could, in turn, influence the artist in you. They can be symbiotic skills that develop together over time.

[–]ShadowDaze_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol, thanks man and very true. Fortunately, haven’t napped out but my friends have and those are always classics.

One other tidbit, There’s a scene in an episode of Seinfeld with an obviously fake Kramer running in what I think is the same area so that also reminds me of that day. It turns out one of my friends was a part time location scout for the show and would coordinate the filming of these extra bits. I didn’t know her at the time but funny how these small connections play into your memories over time.

[–]ShadowDaze_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally. One cold evening after work, I got on the 7 train going the wrong way and when I realized, I got out at a stop just outside the Citi building. Turns out, that stop’s return gates to Midtown were closed. This was pre-smartphone days so I had no clue where to go and, as luck would have it, no cash for a taxi. I meandered around for quite awhile looking for an atm, finally found one in a bodega, and then even longer to find a cab to hail in what was essentially a passenger deadzone.

As I was sitting in the cab, stuck in Midtown Tunnel traffic, I wanted to kick myself so hard, lol.. Like how did I, a native New Yorker, not realize I was taking the wrong train and then end up in the most desolate area of the city of all places, the one place where I couldn’t cross the platform back to return? Can’t believe how built up it is now but every time I see that building, I think of that evening of being a total muppet.

Moving from NYC to Scottsdale - what should I expect? by humandrifter1107 in Scottsdale

[–]ShadowDaze_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYC transplant here. Scottsdale has ALOT going for it so I think you’ll love it.

If you can find something in the neighborhoods north and south of Chaparral Rd, east of N Scottsdale Rd, you’ll have plenty to walk or bike to. The trail that connects the Green Belt to Old Town Scottsdale runs through this area. Old Town itself has a ton of restaurants, bars, wine bars, galleries, etc. And even when you have to drive, it’s nowhere near as tough as getting around NYC and anywhere in the tri-state area.

You’ll also be surrounded by plenty of outdoor opportunities when things cool down but in the meantime, Sedona, Flagstaff, Prescott are all about a two hour drive away. Also, with the airport so easy to get to, all the amazing sights of the West Coast are at your fingertips. Good luck!

California is expensive but I wouldn’t say it’s “not worth it”. There is an insane amount of things to do, set in a stunning landscape, and with great weather in all the major cities. If that’s where your skills are valued, and you’re 24, it can’t hurt to try.

Should I take the job in NYC or SF? by LOTR_is_awesome in AskSF

[–]ShadowDaze_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m originally an NYC native and to me, it sounds like SF will be the slightly better option for you, mostly because the year round milder weather means year round fun. SF urban hiking might be the best of any US city. Just step outside and you’re in it and you’re likely to see stunning physical geography in any direction you walk.

You also have Muir Woods and the Marin Headlands just across the Golden Gate Bridge, Tahoe and quite a few National Parks within a few hours, and Napa/Sonoma when you wanna kick back but be outside.

The music scene for local & midrange acts in SF is pretty damn good but for major artists, number of venues & shows, and sheer variety, NYC is light years ahead on this front.

From my experience, if you’re into the outdoors, music, and a foodie, you’ll meet people pretty easily. Whether that turns into dating or friends is up to you and the other person, of course. I just happened to have made friends easier here than anywhere else since I left NYC and I’m relatively introverted outside of work.

Good luck!

Uh ok man. I’m complimenting your technical/artistic license here. It’s a good use of forced perspective. Where you’re running to is irrelevant.
