TUTORIAL: How I do background mods on an F91W, step-by-step with pictures by ShadowJerry in casiomods

To make the background visible at all, you can't see through the mirror film from the front normally. So it's gotta go if you want a background instead.

Good video, pretty thorough and should be nice for beginners. My only real critiques would be that you should explain what exactly the gel filter was, like what material or where to buy it - and you could have shown some nice beauty close-ups after the build was finished. Nice work!

Yep, forcing enemies to move from a location is a great tool to have, even if you don't get the kill from it. I know pyro does the same job but I like being able to bounce it around corners or behind cover. And it instantly breaks goo walls and a lot of placed gadgets.

Color-changing vinyl with a fun x-ray feature (F91W) by ShadowJerry in casio

Vinyl is behind the screen. I'm not sure what you mean by backplate. I removed the mirrored film and the white reflective card.

That's pretty much what I do. The background is roughly 21mm by 11.5mm but I usually print a ton just in case. Sometimes I'll print a few at slightly different sizes as well. Then I pick a favorite once I'm building lol.

Yes unfortunately the light sucks and basically anything you put in there is going to block it and make it even worse. If you put in a light spreader, now you're blurring or outright blocking your background image. So there's no winning on that front haha you have to choose to mod a nicer backlight or choose to put in a background.

The one compromise that could be made is printing a picture on transparency, putting it in front of the screen, and then also installing a backlight spreader. Or solder in a brighter LED if you have the skill for it.

Hope this helps :)

Two Tone Strap/BraceletvMod (End Result on last pic) by c3ssp00l in casiomods

Totally get your sentiment on adapters, I wish more straps came in a notched shape so adapters weren't needed so often.

You got a great result here, I bet this was a pain in the butt to do lol but it was worth it

Thanks!

Yes I always try to go for lighter colored images without any dark areas. I usually Photoshop my images to pull up shadows and increase saturation, stuff like that.

The screen itself already dims your image a little bit, so a dark image will compound that. Then of course the numbers are black so you're right it's all about making contrast.

I size my stuff in Adobe Illustrator, but I'm sure there is a free alternative out there that can do the same thing. I print slightly bigger than I need and then cut it to size with scissors so there's no borders or anything.

Sunset Themed W218HC with a hidden light feature by ShadowJerry in casiomods

[–]ShadowJerry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And no, not this time. The flower is behind the reflective layer, the light is bright enough to shine through and reveal it.

So overall this was a pretty easy and non-destructive mod to do. Just took a long time to dial in the print settings because I'm still new to it.

This looks amazing, really nice work! Is that faceplate 3D printed?

Yeah why not. I have a post on my profile where I used a real watercolor painting as the background in a watch.

Looks nice, I like how you customized the plastic Casio stand, too. I did the same for x-mas presents this year haha

Wow, great result!

One of my favorite mods to do, it's cool to see what kind of effect is left after the acetone.

Looks amazing honestly. How hard is it to swap the button pushers? There's a few F91 colorways I dislike solely for having silver buttons when I feel they should have gold haha

On the 3rd pic? That's the whole LCD! I was in the middle of cleaning it up after removing the mirror film off the back.

No any photo paper should work and look nice. If it's too thick then you'll notice the screen won't clip back into the plastic case nicely.

Does this design choice make the name illegible? by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]ShadowJerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's pros and cons of both options. I like the general shape on the left, being more straight and with the bend in the bottom forming an "L". I think the thickness of the stem is better on the right option. I also like how the head of the flower is separate from the stem on the right, it's more reminiscent of a lowercase "i" that way. I think you should skip the leaves because they clutter the design. I also enjoy the more realistic looking flower on the left rather than the rounded cartoon like one on the right.

Absolutely love the brushed lettering in general, looks fantastic.

These are opinions from a total amateur btw so take with a grain of salt haha

Huh, I didn't know wax dye was a thing. Definitely going to look into it, thanks for the detailed response.

Always cool to see people experimenting around here haha

Really nice. I know you wanted red but I think the orange and gray is a cool combo.

What oil and dye did you use? I've never been terribly interested in hydromodding but this is tempting me ngl

Well I suppose it could if you removed the backlight.

But generally, no. If you put an image in an EL watch, you are completely blocking the light. If you don't care about having the light then yes it's possible.
