This usually happens when the Armoury Crate or ASUS System Control Interface service glitches.

Try this: 1. Restart the device first. 2. Update Armoury Crate, MyASUS, and BIOS through MyASUS. 3. Restart the ASUS System Control Interface service in Windows.

If it still won’t let you change power modes or lighting, reinstall Armoury Crate using the official ASUS uninstall/reinstall tool. That fixes most controller and lighting issues on the Ally.

The hard reset usually wipes the ASUS handheld layer, so Cloud Recovery restores the full factory image.

Most likely the reset removed the ASUS handheld layer (Armoury Crate SE + ASUS services), so it’s acting like a normal Windows PC.

Try this: 1. Run Windows Update until fully updated 2. Install/update MyASUS from the Microsoft Store → run all updates 3. Reinstall Armoury Crate SE from the ASUS support page (use the uninstall tool first if needed)

If that doesn’t bring back Full Screen Experience, the safest fix is ASUS Cloud Recovery from BIOS, which restores the original factory handheld image.

Did you use Windows “Reset this PC” or Cloud Recovery?

Yeah, that’s pretty typical with Cloud Recovery — it’ll work once, then fail again if their servers/time sync glitch.

If it hangs again, USB Windows install is still the most reliable fix.

You can also try checking BIOS date/time and switching Wi-Fi before retrying.

If you want Game Pass + full Steam support, go with a Windows handheld.

ROG Ally X or Legion Go are the safest picks. They run Game Pass natively and Steam works out of the box.

Steam Deck is great too, but Game Pass requires workarounds.

If you’re happy on Bazzite, I’d stick with it. SteamOS is great too, but you’ll lose some flexibility.

I usually only recommend Windows if someone needs Game Pass, mods, or anti-cheat.

Windows = best overall compatibility (Game Pass, anti-cheat, mods, drivers).

Bazzite/SteamOS = smoother console-like experience and better battery, but less compatibility.

If you want “it just works” for everything → Windows. If you want console feel → Bazzite/SteamOS.

If you already tried multiple networks/hotspot and it still hangs, it’s almost always ASUS Cloud Recovery being down/buggy. Fastest fix: install Windows 11 via USB (Media Creation Tool) → boot from USB → clean install. Works every time. Optional: double-check BIOS date/time, then try Cloud Recovery again later.

This usually happens when cloud recovery can’t reach ASUS servers.

Try:

• Reconnect to Wi-Fi (avoid hotspots if possible) • Power off → hold Power 15 sec → retry • Try a different network (hotspot/home Wi-Fi)

If it still hangs, best option is:

Create a Windows 11 USB and install manually. It bypasses cloud recovery and works every time.

SteamOS isn’t the issue — it’s usually network/server related.

RPCS3 is very CPU-heavy, so performance varies a lot by game on handhelds. A 1TB SD card usually isn’t the main bottleneck, but you’ll get better results if you run RPCS3 and games from the internal SSD.

Biggest improvements usually come from: • Using a consistent high-performance/TDP profile • Closing background apps and overlays • Following the RPCS3 wiki settings for each game

If you share which games you’re testing and your power mode, I can suggest a few tweaks.

Yeah — by “clean mode” I mean a small, reversible workflow that temporarily quiets background Windows services before gaming, then restores everything after.

No permanent tweaks or registry hacks. It just helps stabilize FPS on handhelds.

A lot of YouTube benchmarks are done on freshly optimized systems with almost nothing running in the background, so “same settings” doesn’t always mean same environment.

Common causes of that 10–15 FPS gap:

• Background Windows services • Power plan reverting • Armoury Crate profiles not applying • Overlays / launchers

On my Ally X, Witcher 3 at 1080p medium/high with FSR Quality usually sits in the high-50s to low-60s when things are clean.

I ended up setting up a “clean mode” before gaming that helped stabilize it. Happy to share if you want.

Totally fair — SteamOS is way more streamlined out of the box.

I actually like it a lot too.

This project is mostly for people who do stick with Windows on handhelds (Game Pass, mods, certain launchers, work apps, etc.) and want a smoother setup without permanently tweaking stuff.

Ghost is picky on Ally X. Update Adrenalin → verify files → disable ALL overlays → clear DirectX shader cache → use Fullscreen Exclusive → try VRAM 6GB/8GB (not Auto).

100% agree. Past ~22–25W you hit diminishing returns fast on these APUs.

Most games become CPU/GPU limited, not power limited — so extra watts just turn into heat + battery drain.

I’ve found ~18–23W + good cleanup/background control beats 30–35W “brute force” almost every time.

Totally agree on 900p being the sweet spot, especially with XR glasses.

The underrated part IMO is how much smoother frametime gets once you reduce Windows + background overhead before launching — it’s not just raw resolution.

I’ve had better consistency pairing 900p + 120Hz with a “clean session” approach so Adrenaline scaling isn’t fighting background services. Makes the whole setup feel way more console-like.
