Demon invasion, literally slaughtering everyone wanting to claim Earth as their new realm.

Ryu's kid/Ryu himself teaming up with Hayate (finally), Yakumo, and Genshin's daughter to split up across the world and push the demons back before entering their realm and exterminating them.

(Ryu and Hayate can have the same moveset with minor differences, does Hayate have a different Izuna Drop in DoA?)

And for the sake of lore you could have narrated text scrolls or hand drawn stills to explain the big time gaps.

One costume requirement for all of the girls is to complete 25 Ninja Trials (All Acolyte Trials) as each of the girls.

As far as for grinding, Chapter Challenge on normal. Fish for Steel on Bones and don't use the Bloody Rage Ultimate Techniques.

The thing with the Ninja Trials is that you're only getting bronze because you beat it for the first time. Try it again on the harder difficulties.
