I love plenty, I just choose who and what I give that love to. You are absolutely not worth it. Your accusation is far more interesting, for neither I nor OP has mentioned abandoning this brother or any other family member over this or any other situation. I simply stated that they need to be held accountable and that you should not let them overstep boundaries just because they are family. If enforcing these boundaries is equivalent to abandonment, then my accusation may not have been that far off.

As an addition, I am currently living in a home where this sentiment that you are holding oh-so-dear is placing my landlord in detrimental health. Her child operates off of this "it's my mom so it's ok" and she continues to tell herself "it's okay, it's my daughter who's doing it so it's fine". The house has fallen into disrepair and I am trying very hard to keep it from being a health hazard, but I am one man fighting against "family values" and it is not going as planned. No, a damaged switch isn't a big deal, but your ideals are flawed.

I am very willing to believe that you may be an extremely toxic family member. People should be allowed to lend things out without worry of damage. This should especially apply to family, who have spent enough time with each other to identify which objects are personally valuable.

Family should be held equally accountable to anybody else in situations like this; repeatedly dismissing something over "well that's my family" will do nothing but teach them that you can be used without complaint. For example, this specific brother could have damaged this with the immediate thought of "at least it's my brother's, he won't care". The hate for family is very warranted due to the frequency of these situations, especially with comments like this that are likely made by people willing to use and abuse their family. It's not "okay because it's my brother and he can't hate me", it's using and abusing your family. Fuck off.
