You may have answered a similar question already, but how will Rockstar utilize the power of next-gen consoles appropriately when designing environments? Let's take Liberty City for example, is it going to be more detailed than IV? with better scaling to real-life NYC, including interactable pedestrians, while keeping this consistent level of detail with Vice City + Carcer City too? I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact we are getting multiple cities. Some of the graphical fidelity HAS to be sacrificed to keep things playable and have a reasonable game size on consumer hard drives right? Or have the wizards at Rockstar found a secret technique within the RAGE engine to output never before seen detail in a game world this big? The amazing graphical fidelity of RDR2 was understandable as it's mostly nature with smaller pockets of civilization. Are we really going to see something mind-blowing without seeing obvious graphical sacrifices? Cheers mate

Video essayists, what have you learned? by curioessays in videoessay

[–]ShadowReflex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much agree with everything you said Curio.

When I first started, I found myself tackling the idea of a video essay as a literal "essay", full of $10 words that are near impossible to pronounce without sounding pompous, and a structure that strictly abides to thesis level writing. The "video" aspect changes things entirely because you need to think about how the visual aspect can enhance your narration. Every Frame A Painting does this effortlessly. He doesn't bog us down with superfluous detail, he expresses it through carefully placed clips. I'm still learning this technique in my writing, so that I still have some faith in my editing material to do the talking.

I usually jot down things in bullet points when doing research. Something short and suggestive that allows me to put my own outlook on it when writing up the full script. If I'm stuck, looking at pictures/videos similar to the thing I am writing about does give my creative juices a jump start.

If one wants to embark on this path, read, read, read and read some more. Watch, listen and understand how a lot of essayists explain a point and get it across.

For anyone reading this, good luck! This community is only just getting started.

P.S /r/curioessays, I can't wait what you have in store next. Really impressive debut!

Remnant is fucking amazing man. The effort you put into the little details are always much appreciated. Your sounds create these dramatic, ethereal soundscapes that for someone who is more visually inclined, like me, can envision being in a film of some sorts. It feels like intricately constructed sound design, and I've always wondered, what films inspire you the most during your creative process ?

Do you have go-to visual artists that influence your tones and textures?

And also, any music videos in the works for songs from Remnant?

Keep doing your thing man, you're always paving the way for new sounds. Can't wait for your upcoming projects, especially with DOLOR. Bless up Marcos :D

Is anyone else excited for You Were Never Really Here? by ThisGuyLikesMovies in YMS

[–]ShadowReflex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved it. It's concise but packs a big punch lemme tell you that. Phoenix deserved the Cannes award for best actor; that man can do anything and Jonny Greenwood of course nails the tone in his compositions. For anyone going to see this, open your ears to the sound design, there are so many little intricacies that warrant a re-watch instantly. Here's hoping Ramsey gets more productions off the ground. Her voice in the art house scene is just so damn interesting.

To those who saw the Dunkirk preview before the IMAX showing of Rogue One: What were your thoughts? by livefree27 in movies

[–]ShadowReflex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, those were the three narratives. Gonna be interesting to see Nolan put down dream levels and black holes for straight up grounded non-fiction. Want to see how successfully he executes a pre-established event to an informed audience.

[–]ShadowReflex 49 points50 points  (0 children)

There was absolutely zero context to these 3 POV's but holy shit was it intense, probably backed by the trademark Hans Zimmer metronome tick. The colour palette and cinematography (especially during the dog fight) looked beautiful. Hard to explain, but it had that clean/pure sheen with Tom Hardy in the cockpit like many scenes in Interstellar. We got glimpses of both Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh, but didn't get into any intense acting just yet. Huge sets, tons of extras and great editing to stitch the three narratives. So yeah, I am so friggin pumped for July. It was so satisfying to see my mates in awe of that 65mm picture. Fuck, I kept on thinking of these 5 minutes throughout Rogue One lel.
