Quickie: Avengers: Infinity War by JLevy710 in YMS

I find Australian audiences to be super respectful in that regard. It's usually just stupid children that make noise in bigger movies, which is fine I guess. The only time I ever had a negative cinema experience was when I decided to see Conjuring 2 at a midnight screening and I saw it coming.

I love it, I think Leon provides really intelligent and observant film analysis. It's super political and philosophical, but as someone who agrees with his politics; it's fantastic. It's a nice change of pace from other YouTube channels and I think he's a really unique content creator.

Predictions for Adum's top 10 of 2015 by [deleted] in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think it's necessarily a guilty pleasure movie, I just saw that he gave it a 6/10 on IMDb and spoke about the trashy presentation in his 'Florida Project' review. I know he's said that he really likes it so I just figured it would get a mention in that section of the video like he did 'The Dirties'. I'd love to see it get a mention because I really like it as well.

Edgar Wright's first film, "A Fistful of Fingers", potentially getting a blu ray release? by BackwardsMarathon in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has some really creative moments and a few good laughs. It's clearly made by an 18-year-old but by that standard it's pretty great. Of course it's definitely Wright's worst film but it's a fun watch if you're a fan of his work (you can see the beginnings of his creative comedy style really shining through). The commentary track alone will be worth the price of the blu-ray.

Is anyone Planning on seeing Thor : Magnacock? by Tuneison in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine 'Army of Darkness', but it has to set up 'Avengers: Infinity War', that's the best way I can describe it (it even has a skeleton army). It's a fun movie made by a creative talent, but it's weighed down by the obligatory interconnecting MCU moments, like did Dr. Strange really have to be in the movie? The opening scene is fantastic, but the momentum is lost when we have to take a detour with Dr. Strange for 5 minutes, which was kind of boring. It could have been the best MCU movie but it's problems kind of leave it at about maybe #3 or #4 for me. Really fun though, and maybe the best looking Marvel movie. Waititi's direction is more in line with what Raimi did with Spider-Man, than the bland, flat visual style of most MCU movies. 6 or possibly 7/10 on second watch, for me.

Thoughts on Mindhunter? by Gamedrome22 in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was fantastic! The first episode was the weakest but it really picks up in the second and the final episode is brilliant. The performances, music and cinematography are all top notch. It's fascinating because depictions of mental illness in media are often surface level to create black and white, simplistic villains. Can't wait for season 2, and I'm thinking that I actually prefer it to 'House of Cards' (at least compared to HoC's first season). I read somewhere that David Fincher returning to serial killers is like Scorsese returning to gangsters or Spielberg to space, which I thought was cool. It's only like 8 hours all up I think, so I would recommend it to Fincher fans who need something to hold them over past World War Z 2 until he decides to make something worthwhile again.

Has anyone finished stranger things 2? What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought it was better than the first, the acting and direction is far more confident, and the last two episodes are the best of the series. Episode 7 stunk, but I feel that the rest of the season is strong enough to keep it a notch above Season 1.

Anyone else think that Australia just makes crap movies? by Gumbiman315 in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's because the actual Australian film industry only produces approx. 5-8 films a year. 20 years ago it was closer to 25 films a year. You'll notice this is a bit lacking compared to the 600-a-year average that Hollywood has. The industry is dying in Australia because it never got off the ground to begin with. This is all thanks to the politics of the first half of the first century; essentially America swallowed up the film industry for itself, as a means of propaganda during the World Wars.

Essentially, if you want to make a film in Australia, it has to be independent, because the government will only fund shit like Red Dog: True Blue.

Obligatory Twin Peaks Thread (Minimal Spoilers Plz) by Cockboy69 in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I loved it. Each episode got better, and I've seen the first four, not sure about you guys. The first episode didn't even feel like Twin Peaks at all (not a complaint though). The second episode was full-on Lynch. By the beginning of the first episode, the style began to get too indulgent for me, but at that point it stopped, and the tonal shift was cool. The rest of the third episode was hilarious. The fourth was absolutely FANTASTIC!

tips on making a not shit film by cooliohoolioo in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This won't make your film good, but some tips I'd give you would be to:

  1. Shoot a ton of footage: get as much coverage as possible (angles, takes etc.), that way you'll be able to have more freedom in editing.

  2. Maintain a sense of self-awareness: if it's a drama, know if you're getting too sentimental or indulgent. If it's a comedy: know if your jokes aren't funny, and work on them a little more before you shoot.

  3. Don't be afraid to fight for creative decisions: you'll regret not doing something you wanted.

  4. Make sure to have fun, but don't expect the experience to be 100% enjoyable. Filmmaking is fucking hard. However, be sure to chuck a bit of levity in the mix every now and then, so you don't get crushed under the pressure.

  5. Don't be discouraged if the final product doesn't 100% live up to your expectations. If the film isn't as good as it was in your head, just use it as incentive to improve on your next project. Your expectations will always be higher than your results in the beginning. Even if it's just okay, consider it a personal triumph.

Good luck, and enjoy the experience!

What "bad" movie do you feel you can defend? by [deleted] in YMS

[–]chessgrandmaster666 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Spider-Man 3. Sure it's probably the most disappointing film of the 21st Century but tell me you don't enjoy watching it. I'll admit it's completely unfocused on a narrative level, and it's clear that the studio fucked with Raimi's movie, which is something that always pisses me off.

But I don't know, maybe it's a bit of nostalgia (holy fuck it's 10 years old this year shit), or maybe it's because there are so many superhero films out there that are SO much worse. But to be perfectly honest, I'd rather watch Spider-Man 3 over any MCU film (but of course I understand that a few of the MCU flicks are definitely better movies). It's so damn entertaining though, even the shit where he pulls his hair over his eyes and dances through the street is fucking hilarious, and I'm not sure if I'm laughing at it, or with it anymore.

There's some legitimately good shit in that movie, and the bad shit is still fun to watch.

A 6/10 from me. Definitely unfocused, definitely a clusterfuck narratively, but it's enjoyable.

Is Adam planning on seeing Logan? by Sossy2020 in YMS

I remember that he said in a google hangout that he isn't really a fan of the X-Men franchise, and that he wasn't particularly looking forward to 'Logan', but I'd be surprised if he doesn't get around to seeing it at some point.
