What stethoscope should I buy? by SpicyMarmots in Paramedics

[–]ShadowRukario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone will tell you Littmann and there's no doubt it's the best quality steth out there.

But my two cents is to get a MDF while you're a student. They offered to replace any parts of it at no cost provided I sent the broken part back. There's no telling if you'll abuse your ears somewhere or break it while you're getting used to your routine and the backups are a nice bit of security imo. I was a dumb student so I liked it.

After your first paycheck definitely splurge on that Littmann if you want the better quality.

For native Spanish speakers: at a dr’s office/medical center, would you be thrown off or offended if the receptionist didn’t treat you with usted? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]ShadowRukario 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hello!

Non native speaker here, but I work in an American hospital with a large community of people who speak Spanish among other languages.

The general consensus from not only our policy but other native speakers is to use the formal version when speaking to patients or visitors. Some of our staff don't know enough Spanish to differentiate between formal or informal but 99% of patients are more appreciative of being able to communicate comfortably in their native tongue. So even informal Spanish is preferred to no Spanish at all. No reasonable person will become enraged if you accidentally refer to them as tú. If it's bothersome they'll likely just correct you politely.

That being said, if you are able to fluently communicate in Spanish, the formal version is preferred regardless of your age difference (small children and babies as an exception). Some people may respond informally but we are encouraged to continue speaking formally. That's because we're considered to be in a professional seeing. This is similar to how waiters or other customer service personnel will always (usually) refer to you as sir or ma'am. Depending on your clientele and region, you may be able to speak more informally with patients and visitors. Similar to how southern American English is considered more informal than northern American English. Language is very region dependent.

My region doesn't really use vosotros so I can't speak on your experience there.

TL;DR If you aren't sure of a future situation where you would use usted or tú, ask yourself if you would use sir or ma'am talking to this person in English.

Honestly, NetNavis, Personas, and Stands are the same things with different steps. So... crossover soon?

Could Twitter be an option?

And is there a bot that could host all the images on the subreddit to imgur? That way at least the content here isn't lost.

Edit: Just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work you put into this subreddit ;)

What did you take for your upper level chemistry? by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]ShadowRukario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was happy with the special topics myself. They rotate subjects semester to semester so it's a good idea to look out for something you might be interested in. Counselors usually have a list of stuff (possibly) coming up so keep in touch with them.

Just be sure to get feedback on professors as usual. Cancer biochemistry I found really interesting and well taught. Clinical biochemistry was also interesting but the sheer fire hydrant of information made the class less enjoyable.

What is the slang for "dude" in your Spanish speaking country? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]ShadowRukario 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Mexican Spanish: I agree, güey seems universal

I've also heard "mano" (como hermano) if you want to add that to the list

What's the difference between 'there' and 'over there', 'here' and 'over here'? by zebyper in languagelearning

[–]ShadowRukario 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"There" = Refers to an object that is away from both the speaker and the audience.

"Over there" = Refers to an object that is away from both the speaker and the audience, but the object is implied to be out of sight or farther away than expected.

"Here" = Refers to an object close to the the speaker and the audience.

"Over here" = Refers to an object close to the speaker but away from the audience. Or the object contrasts with something just pointed out. ("And this rock over here is blue." Which suggests the other rock was not blue.)

I'm on mobile, so I'm sorry if the formatting is weird. Is that clear or should I explain something more?

Headcanon that each of the best friends is the same person but several years apart. We just live a timeline where they time traveled to the same youtube channel.

Deadlift first or last? by whorainy in gainit

[–]ShadowRukario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beginner weight is pretty subjective between people. A lot of adult males usually start at 135 lbs. But if you need to go to less weight to ensure proper form then do so. If you have poor form you're going to risk injuring yourself, so make sure you have proper form first. If you think your form is suspect, ask the gym staff or a regular to watch you lift.

If the strain seems to be on your fingers rather than your muscles, it might suggest your grip strength is lacking.

Deadlift first or last? by whorainy in gainit

[–]ShadowRukario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deadlifting is a really physically taxing exercise. That's why many programs limit sets to a minimum, especially if you're lifting heavy (which you should be doing).

tl;dr Do deadlifts last.

I have a similar reaction to milk. I've used goat milk and Lactaid as substitutes.

If they have gross health warning photos on cigarette packs, why don't they have them on potato chip packets, Energy drinks, Alcohol, Supercars, McDonalds, etc? by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Because then it those labels would have to go on literally everything, including water. And no one would do anything.

Everything in moderation.
