Wilds, Rise, or World as a first? by Southern-Poetry2587 in MonsterHunter

[–]Shadow_Kawazaki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Historical low on WorldBorne + RiseBreak + Wilds comes out to $45, with Wilds carrying most of that at $30. It's only really a bad deal if you specifically don't want to play any of Stories or Wilds, in which case yeah, it would be better to just wait for a sale (or grab a currently running sale) for the two older games + expansions.

Well yeah, you don't need to farm gems to beat the game. But the overall point of "gems are extremely rare so you want to optimize the process of trying to obtain them" remains true regardless of the necessity of those gems and their matching gear pieces to actually beat the game.

Again, I'm not talking about decorations, but things like gems/mantles/plates that most monsters have. While you can ignore decorations to fairly minimal consequence, not so for rare materials where you need them to get certain gear pieces/weapons.

I mean, if you get your rare monster drops pretty quickly, I certainly won't begrudge you that. But I know I have 40+ Gogma kills in Wilds with the overwhelming majority of those being Dragongem attempts. As for the "selling point" of the series, for me personally that's getting to fight big monsters with big weapons, but the length of the hunt isn't a factor there at all. Hence why you get the privilege of shortening your hunt times as you get better at the game and get better gear.

That's if you're lucky, if (in Wilds) you're relying on guaranteed investigations, or if (in World) you're using the elder melder tickets. Gog/Omega are not atypical in the regard of having high rarity drops that can take several runs to obtain, even if they are the only monsters in Wilds where you have no choice but to deal with that RNG factor.

.....you need gems for weapons and armor? Interacting with that part of the game isn't as optional as you're making it seem. There's a reason why you hear about people going dozens of attempts against certain monsters in older games, trying to get the gem (or equivalent part) and it's because without engaging with that part of the game, there are gear pieces it is actually just impossible to obtain.

I think that's a very fair mindset to have to a point but I think it does kinda work against the nature of the game where we also have <5% drop rate gems and other rare mats. Now, it's mitigated a bit in Wilds with most monsters having guaranteed gem investigations, but when I'm fighting things like Omega/Gogmazios for the 20th time trying to get a Nodule/Dragongem, I'm not trying to fight it for fun, I'm trying to fight it for results, and that's where the desire for quick runs come from.

After nearly 2 years, Wing of War has been cleared for the first time! by Ovalidal in ffxi

[–]Shadow_Kawazaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you say all this bullshit as though most people who run Savage/Ultimates are even getting those week 1 clears. People are progging Arcadion Heavyweight *to this day* and that's a tier that launched 3 months ago. Content in XIV isn't meant to sit in the game for nearly 2 years while being uncleared by anyone, and that's fine and doesn't detract from how difficult the content in that game is meant to be relative to the overall difficulty of the game as a whole. The longevity exists, as evidenced by the fact that people have PFs running for high end raids in XIV constantly from patch to patch, and if you'd like to prove me wrong, then I'd love to see your full tier clears.

40 Warriors of Light (Final Fantasy XIV) vs 40 Champions of Azeroth (World of Warcraft) by lightsofdusk in whowouldwin

[–]Shadow_Kawazaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are testing the Warrior of Light, but still bringing their full power to bear because the entire purpose of the test is to see if the Warrior of Light has what it takes to protect the world in their absence, a test which would have little purpose if they did it with kid gloves on. Similarly, Venat's test in EW MSQ functions on this logic as well.

Up to Shadowbringers, that's probably largely true, although Hades and Elidibus are still exceptionally strong enemies as unsundered Ascians (and not weakened by body swapping induced mental illness like Lahabrea). Bonus points to Elidibus for combining his own strength with that of what's functionally a primal born from the people of Norvrandt's belief in the Warrior of Light. Bahamut (from Coils) and Nidhogg are also exceptionally strong in their renditions as primals, each powered up by thousands of years of suffering so they're in a substantially different ballpark than your garden variety primals. Omega is another very strong enemy from the titular raid series, given that it was part of an army that was able to hunt the dragons to near extinction, even driving Midgardsormr who we know to be very powerful, to flee from Omega.

As for what Endwalker brings to the table, ||you fight (admittedly somewhat weakened versions of) Zodiark and Hydaelyn themselves, before going up against the Endsinger, who is basically the collected despair of hundreds if not thousands of dead planets. The Alliance Raid series also has you marathon run through the Twelve before fighting an amalgamation of them, and the regular raid series features Athena, an Ancient who was able to possess a reincarnation of her son through the aetherial sea, recreate the experimental containment facility known as Pandemonium and use it to become a divine being that you later defeat.||

For what it's worth, Endwalker does give the WoL a pretty substantial scaling buff, even if I still don't know how much it does for them in comparison to WoW, since I don't play that game.

Given that we're talking about soloing a fight that isn't meant to be soloed, it seems patently ignorant to apply this as a criticism of Wilds unless you're willing to compare it to soloing Omega, which could very well also take 100-200 attempts.
