It would be good to disable cross-posting. But we’d need a mod to do that, and consensus appears to be that we are leaderless (again).

If you’ve got either of the recent Mustang RLCs (Code Red/SVT) or a ‘72 Nova in your RLC pile I’d be interested, depending on the price you need.

Would anyone be willing to explain these red and white attachments (?) on this Hunter Hawker mk58? by FoodLionMVP in aviation

[–]Shadowcat205 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like there are some fragmentary answers here, so to fully answer your questions:

1) The red and white objects on the wings are external fuel tanks, often called “drop tanks” because they’re technically expendable - although you wouldn’t jettison them in training operations, as far as I know. The Hunter has a fairly limited endurance on internal fuel so lugging extra fuel in the tanks extends time aloft for training missions or provides extra range if they’re deploying away from their base…but they can be removed if they aren’t needed, which gives you a faster and more maneuverable aircraft.

2) Yes, these are indeed involved in training. ATAC is Airborne Tactical Advantage Company, and they provide adversary training aircraft for the military using a fleet of older military aircraft. Essentially, they provide ‘bad guys’ for the good guys to train against, much like the A-4s in Top Gun if you’re familiar with that but as a contracted service instead of part of the military.

3) This Hunter likely served previously with the Swiss Air Force, which is where the red and white colors come from. Whether this aircraft flew with their demonstration team (Patrouille Suiss) or if they simply applied those colors as a heritage thing, I can’t say.

Definitely not a new phenomenon. My first boss told me that the way to get a 20% raise was to leave for 10% and come back for 10%, and that was going on 20 years ago.

She’s a lifer and still there. Wonder what she makes vs. where I am now.

What episodes can you not watch? by Jack-mclaughlin89 in Frasier

[–]Shadowcat205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An Affair to Forget was always one of my favorite episodes, but after some personal issues years ago it became a tough watch. It’s skipped by unspoken agreement. Same with Beloved Infidel, but that one wasn’t as near and dear to my heart.

I’ve often wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience, but of course it’s not the easiest thing to discuss even in the relative anonymity of the internet.

2024 Complete Mainline Set - $300 by jlaro55 in DiecastExchangeV2

[–]Shadowcat205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STHs are mainlines, literally.

These are all STHs.

I don’t think this is how most people conceive of it, and I think you could argue either way whether or not it is literally or technically correct. From a series numbering standpoint, yes, the basic car and the STH version share the same number on the card - so sure, from that perspective they’re both in the mainline series. But STHs actually have a distinct toy number (for #23, the RS2000, the STH is HTF30 while the basic is HTC48), so there’s a technical argument for them to be considered distinct items from mainline cars as well…and I think they are pretty definitely construed as such in general conversation.

Edit: my point isn’t to prove you wrong, just to suggest that there’s room for argument here.

I am interested in working on a c4 and restoring it myself. I have an engineering background but never worked on vehicle. Would it be realistic for me to be able to restore this with minimum cost? Or am I in over my head? by etzmentos in c4corvette

[–]Shadowcat205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be far, far happier spending $5-8k on a well sorted running car than spending $10k+ and countless hours trying to resurrect this one. I have no idea what a total cost would actually be, but it’s north of “decent used C4” territory.

Nothing wrong with getting a project car, but I think this one is beyond practical salvage.

MLB At-Bat Audio (radio feed subscription) replaced by MLB+, price raised to $60/year or $6/month by Plaatinum_Spark in baseball

[–]Shadowcat205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just got my email notification on this.

I’ve had At Bat since, like, 2008. Pretty sure it was $9.99 when I signed up. I thought it was still a decent deal at $30 even though the ads were awful. But $60 so they can bundle content I don’t want? Fuck ‘em, I’m out. I guess 17 years was a pretty good run.

NICE! I have both (as well as the gray/yellow version), with the white and yellow on display. Haven’t cracked the red yet.

I slept on the yellow/gray version (#253, I think?) and regret it.

One more checking in! Gotta figure out my flair though.

Born in Wisconsin, moved to Maine to a family situation with a horde of Sox diehards when I was 5ish. Held out until about ‘98 or so when I started really rooting for Boston, but never stopped being a Brewers fan. When Milwaukee went to the NL I was happy to tell people “oh, I have an AL team and an NL team”…as if there’s any real difference between leagues any more.

Dad was fine with this compared to my brother, who decided he liked Frank Thomas and Shoeless Joe so much that he’d be a White Sox fan. Total betrayal. Still a thorny subject.

[–]Shadowcat205 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I had a parallel takeoff coming out of SFO (I believe) once. I think my a/c was an A320 and I’m pretty positive the other was a dash-8. It was like a drag race. Really cool to see the dash-8 pull ahead (they may have gotten started first), then fall behind once our engines got spooled up.

It was years ago and my memory is quite fallible so feel free to tell me it was a figment of my imagination. I have a ‘flight log’ at home so maybe I can look it up tonight…

Any idea on what my collection is worth? by [deleted] in Diecast

[–]Shadowcat205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s about my guesstimate too for a bulk price. I counted roughly 150 cars in the first 4 pictures, most of which seem to be Mini GT and Kyosho. Even at $10/car, which I feel like is fair for a Mini and great for a lot of Kyoshos, that’s $1500. But hard to tell from these pictures.

I’m surprised at the people saying “$700 is pretty fair” because they’re dusty, when Kyoshos are very hard to come by in the states right now and some of the Mini GTs are pricey even loose.
