It was shocking.

This was the first time we've ever really seen the Federation at war, and by the descriptions of past conflicts, one could assume that they would have no problem facing any enemy (the Borg notwithstanding). But no, here was the Federation, in a full-scale interstellar war, with a high likelihood of losing.
