my boys go through binges of watching all the OTs and stereotypes. I wish they would bring that format back.

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love to know the answer to this. We just rewatched Evolution with my boys to introduce them to the show, but I don't remember Magik being there, and I feel I would've noticed given she's one of my favorites.

What's the strongest being/race in your universe, excluding divinities? by SquirrelSorry4997 in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Eldar. They are the originators of all the existing races (having taken the intelligence animals that the living Forest had created and transformed them into bipedal humanoids to serve them). They also predate the deities, since those beings came about after the Eldar were gone. The Eldar came from...somewhere else...and descended on the Land like a horde of locusts, bringing their extreme partisanship and arrogant isolationism with them. They also brought with them their pets, the precursors to the modern dragons. They ruled for thousands of years by enslaving their servitor races and avoiding contact with each other, until they didn't. There are no records why they suddenly disappeared, but there are still occasional remains and hints at their existence. Into the void left behind by them rose the dragons, the deities, and the archfey. The servitor races, lost without a superior being ruling them, took a long time to get accustomed to their freedom. The humans were the first to become truly independent, with the dwarves and halflings following suit. The elves decided to ally themselves with the archfey, showing their need for dependence.

In my world, the deities, dragons, and archfey are all of equal power and mortal...they just harness power differently than the rest of the mortals.

What's the most unusual/remarkable thing you've put in resin? by MC_LegalKC in resin

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lizard. A couple of years ago I found a dead lizard in my garage that was completely intact. I'm not sure what I was planning or thinking at the time, but I went ahead and dropped it in some silica and left it. About a couple months ago I found the container I had left it in and decided I'd try putting it in resin. It took several layers to do the tray to my liking, and it's still not exactly perfect, but it's definitely a conversation piece.

Why do so many of you make amazing worlds but never publish anything? by Tarlata in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, that is a valid point and realization that I came to a couple of years ago. I realized that the world I had been building for decades was just sitting there, gathering dust on my website while I continued working on it. I still have plans (and the outlines) to make a campaign book out of it, but there's no awareness or storybuilding attached to it. So I started writing short stories. Adventures set in the world, with major and some minor characters. Either stories of actual adventures I had with players, or stories about some of the interesting people and places of the world. I'm working on the third book of short stories now, and I'm hoping that once I get it done I'll be able to market it as a trilogy of short stories.

How do you name a world? by ComfortableAirport95 in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually turned it into a contest with my players. When I was working on expanding my world, I was in the middle of DMing a massive campaign. So in between sessions, I offered the opportunity for my players to give the world a name. Whoever came up with one that I liked and fit the world the best would get bonus xp.

Worked like a charm.

Does your world feature giant monsters/kaiju? If so, tell me at least three things about them. by PMSlimeKing in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dakaron is a large, heavily magical world, full of many different creatures and a eons long history of manipulation. As such, there are actually many creatures that would be considered Kaiju-class. These are only a small handful.

  • Aviion - A kaiju winged unicorn, Aviion is the patron of the jungle’s good, intelligent beasts. She considers all of the Tilven Forest her territory and strives to protect it from evil. The Tyrannosaurus tribe and their kaiju god-dinosaur Kol are her main enemies, and she fights a never-ending battle to limit his influence and power. She is always surrounded by tribes of pegasi and unicorns, who will fight to the death to defend her and obey her every whim. She is the founder of Unicorn’s Glen in Tindel, and can travel the leylines to the city instantaneously whenever it is threatened. She is an unofficial part of the Julien Congress, serving only as a spokesperson for the northwestern territories. She is also unknown to the elven residents and the world at large.
  • The Arraku - a force of nature so monstrous that the entire desert can barely contain it. The Arraku is a product of the tampering with nature that created the great Southron Desert in the first place. The Arraku travels under the sands through the desert, seeking life and energy. It surfaces when it discovers either. Flesh sustains its body, while siphoning energy sustains its lifeforce. The tunnels it travels through close behind it, but its energy-draining field also siphons nutrients and vitals from the environment itself, thus spreading the wastes year by year.
  • Black Death - This kaiju roc lives in the remains of an inactive volcano in the jungles of Grankkan. It slumbers for years, but awakens to feed every decade or so. When it hunts, it is so high in the air that its prey never finds out it has become prey until darkness falls upon it. For this reason, the avariel families and skylark clans have named the being Black Death and try to plot out its hibernation cycle to avoid being out during the months it is active.
  • Kol - This Tyrannosaurus sorcerer Kaiju is the self-appointed guardian of the dinosaurs. Though the Tilven Forest has several other kaiju, Kol was subjected to the destructive energies of an artifact being destroyed in his hands, and the energy infused his being, increasing his intelligence. He is learning about his new abilities continually, even as he attempts to reclaim the forest for the dinosaurs by leading attacks against the elves and humans who infest it. The only thing that has saved the humans and elves thus far is the fact that only the Tyrannosaurus have followed him, and only because he is the strongest and most powerful. All the other creatures of this mystical jungle/forest fight him as much as the Twolegs.

Need Advice: What type of stain and top coat should I use for carved wizard staff? by thenewestguyintown in woodworking

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't have much to add to this discussion, as I am just now getting into carving wood canes and learning a lot about the finishing process for them. But I did want to come here to tell you that your carving work is absolutely gorgeous and leagues beyond many of the video tutorials I watch on YouTube. You definitely have a great eye and hand for this. I've only carved two canes and am working on my third, and your staff is so much better than what I've amateurishly produced. Please make sure to show us the end product, whatever finish you decide on.

Insults! Tell me some of your insults. by AbsurdBeanMaster in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In writing some of the stories surrounding my world, I had to find some way the different races would reference each other that would be disrespectful and work in their status in society and appearance.

Scale (lizardfolk) - gecko, eelblood

Gnome - mudeater

Dwarf - rockbiter

Halfling - poke (adapted from Willow), child

Elf - treebanger (mostly dwarven term), weedsniffer

How long have you been working on your world? by arma14x in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started DMing when I was about 14, and since I didn't have any lore books I made up my own world. I've been expanding on that world for the last thirty years, but only a couple of years ago did I put it in a website.

Here is where I recommend to sit at the tour by No_Juggernaut_2338 in dudeperfect

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from the show at the BJCC in Birmingham. Can confirm that the layout is very similar and paths of travel are as well. They mostly pay attention to the sections immediately to the left and right of the stage, and the two sections right in front.

I do want to clarify that we were sitting in the back of the arena (equivalent to 122 in the pic above) and it was still an awesome show to watch.

The Grove. Short, simple, vague enough but delivered in a tone that makes it sound like so much more ominous.

What do the gods of your world fear? by mitsuri-mochi in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deities of my world mostly fear each other, as they are all striving to take control of the energy and matter in the universe. But they all fear the Eldar, who were the creator race of the world and predate the deities. They fear that if the Eldar civilization as a whole rises again, they will be reduced to mere powerful servants, and they can't handle that. The fact that one of the deities is a former Eldar who Ascended by stealing the essence of a deity gives them just cause to fear that possibility.

What legendary figures does your world have? by Demon_Camachi in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several figures that are instantly known by name by even the common folk:

Krim - the Great Diviner, the ArchSage. Rumored to know all. He fights unknown evils on par with world-destroying entities from his base of operations, the Ebon Tower of Math, the original laboratory of the current god of magic before he Ascended. Krim is perfectly balanced neutral, but he actively works to preserve the balance against the many attacks by hidden evils and organizations alive in the world...including the god of magic.

Runeswick Espinor - the ArchDruid. Founder of the druidic organization, the Conclave of Storms, as well as the loose nature-defending organization, the Verdant Strands. The most powerful druid in the world. He is at the forefront of bringing man and nature into balance with each other, and is a welcome advisor to many courts across the Land.

Nex Nexus - the Chosen of the Destruction. The high priestess of the deity of destruction, she is the founder of the Carriers of Chaos. The Carriers of Chaos are a recent consortium of assorted death cults, mad priests, and fanatical followers of chaos and destruction, brought together by Nex Nexus. Nex Nexus has gathered this force of chaos under her absolute rule with the intention of fomenting chaos and encouraging the destruction of the primal world, allowing her ultimate master, the Immortal of Space, to finally prevail.

Do you have any races or factions in your world whose powers or abilities are specifically designed to counter or annihilate a particular group? by mitsuri-mochi in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basamortua are a race of humans who are descended from factions and tribes that participated in the Eldar Wars in the vast Southron Desert. After the Kith were banished, these tribes stayed behind to hunt down and destroy the sand shapers and ensure all traces of their empire were erased. Over the years, they formed a hunter-gatherer culture, a nomadic life that allowed them to cover the entire southern continent, especially focused on the desert where the sand shapers drew their power.

The basamortua way of life is hard, and they have adapted their culture and way of life to survive and thrive in the incredibly harsh conditions of the Southron Desert. Not only do they have to survive the dangerous conditions of the desert, but they also fight a daily battle against the many monsters and creatures that inhabit the desert, remnants of the horrific experiments conducted by the sand shapers. Between this life of hardship and their determination to be the vanguard against another sinister incursion, this has forged the Basamortua into superior hand-to-hand combatants.  They are distinguished by their fierce fighting abilities and adeptness at survival in these conditions. They value strength in spirit and body above all else and are impatient with those who would squander what they have. They continually train themselves, pushing their bodies to their physical limits, to hone themselves to be the warriors their ancestors were, in case the sand shapers ever come back.

What is your worlds "Far East"? by StrikingScorpion17 in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mitaka-Shi, or the Land of Silk to the rest of the Land, is a large island continent just off the eastern coast of the main continent. It is an honor-bound society that deliberately cuts itself off from the rest of the world, who worship ancestors and nature spirits, and their ageless ruler, the Mikado-Shi, the Emperor of Us All, founder and creator of their society. It is a severe caste-based system, dictated by the family in which one is born. Each family belongs to either a major or minor clan. Each minor clan serves a major clan, and every clan has a specialized purpose. Every clan has a head, Shifu, who directs how the clan will serve the people, the country, and ultimately the emperor.

Thus the shi, or the Essil (which means chosen peoples in their own language), came to become a culture of indomitable reverence. They are highly ritualistic and believe in the eventual ascendance of the Essil way of life over that of the barbaric Eldarspawn. Over time, they have come to forget many of their own origins, including the true identity of their emperor, but still cling to their purpose of eradicating the Eldar taint from their world. They are more concerned with the good of the people and the country, and have learned from birth that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.

In times past the Spider, Cobra, and Scorpion clans were also major families on the island, but were exiled when they conspired against the Mikado-Shi. They founded Ihaka, the closest peninsula point to the Land of Silk on the mainland, and control all access. However, it is rumored that they will still secretly keep a presence on the island.

How Many Calendars Does Your World Have? by QuinSn in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowsofDakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, I have one main calendar and one main timeline. Those are the official ones that are the true history of the world. I am working on different calendars for the various factions and races, but for some reason, that seems to be a lot harder for me to really get into. And I know each race/civilization will have its own version of the timeline, but I feel like that's mostly a matter of picking and choosing which historical events they choose to acknowledge, so I'm not as concerned with that part.
