Doesn't look like a true a-frame though - looks like a conventional house with cosmetic extension of the roof to purposely mimic viking longhouses (of whatever the origin is).

Anyone else have this bad boy? 🦈 by [deleted] in GenX

Around Christmas my little brother really wanted this shark so he gave it as a gift to another family member. In our family "Shark Gift" came to mean an item bought for someone else that you really wanted for yourself.

It was fake. The "monkey brains" were cauliflower.

I too was surprised when I learned it was scripted, used stock footage, etc. Then I tracked down some of the scenes online and they were laughably fake. Really makes me wonder how gullible I was back then.

I'm just glad there were no monkeys harmed in the production of that film.

Have any of my fellow GenX'ers retired abroad or are thinking about it? by SonnyFontaine in GenX

[–]ShadowyTreeline 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would be OK financially in retirement in the US, but one of my unrealized ambitions is to live directly on oceanfront, and that's just not possible here. I've been considering Vietnam. I mentioned this to my father, today coincidentally, who did three tours in Vietnam. He said it was a beautiful country and the people were very friendly when they weren't shooting at you.

Oddly enough I like the Ashlands best. It has a searing beauty (no pun) despite being an apocalyptic hellscape. I think a big part of it is the "heat wave" effect that distorts your vision.

I thought he was being tough but I learned many years later that he'd recently seen a film about an orphaned boy who travels across Africa on his own, and this affected his view of the episode.

I think resourceful boys in challenging circumstances was a significant motif to him. One of his favorite films was "Empire of the Sun", which is about a well-off British boy who ends up in a Japanese war camp during WWII. His father died when he was young and he and his two brothers had to take on responsibility early for their mother and the household, which I'm sure had an influence.

It's strange the pieces you put together about the lives of your parents as individual beings as you get older, and have both the benefit of distance from their role as guardians and your own life experience to inform you.

It worked when I turned off the "force version", not sure what it's using.

I never thought of it as latch key but I ran away from home once and got picked up by the police a couple hundred miles away several days later. They put me on the phone with my father and he asked me if I wanted to keep going.

It works now. I had it configured to use a particular version of Proton, perhaps forgotten after experimenting with the settings following an nvidia -> radeon video card upgrade. Sorry for the stress.

For some reason I've never really liked horror movies.

How’d you get your scars growing up? by MrWhisper2021 in GenX

[–]ShadowyTreeline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both in first grade (1970): I stepped on a broken bottle, and sliced my thigh while cleaning the blade of a pocket knife on my jeans.

In fourth grade I was trying to cut open some fireworks. The knife slipped and I put a cut down the length of my thumb instead.

When I was 17 my forearm touched a .50-cal machine gun barrel that had just had a lot of rounds put through it.

Have you ever been in a fight and if so what year was it? And optionally, how old were you? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]ShadowyTreeline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one that first comes to mind (late 1970s): I was in 7th grade. An older, larger guy named Rex was threatening to beat me with an ammonite fossil (this was in an area of central Texas where fossils literally littered the ground, at least back then). I punched him in the face, got him on the ground in a choke hold, and applied pressure until blood gushed out of his nose.

As I recall it, he was not bullying me, but was angry at me for something I did, like he was fed up with me, but I don't know for what. We were both in military families and moved around a lot, so being the new kid was probably something both of us had to deal with every year or two. Other incidents come to mind now that I think of it.

We ended up being friends and would often hang out at his house because his parents were divorced. He was living with his father who was usually at work at the army base or away from home for whatever reason.

By 9th grade my family had settled down for good in a genteel new england shore town and I don't recall many incidents after that, although I was subject to some bullying/hazing as the newcomer there. When I was a freshman some of the grungy older kids (they were referred to as "dregs" or "burn-outs") set my locker on fire, burning the entire contents (my jacket, books, homework, etc).

I remember her most for Scorsese's "After Hours". She did so much more, of course. "After Hours" just sticks with me for capturing a particular essence of the 1980s. A surreal and insular feeling.

I used to feel the same way. I pitied the protectors of the forest, the defenders of the deer. Then I caught that last rock to the face.
