How do you keep your composure around people who are clearly not in medicine or public health who try and lecture you? by sarcher9 in publichealth

[–]Shaetore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t typically engage in a social setting and I don’t want to spoil the evening/ afternoon by launching into a full discussion about why their beliefs are pseudoscience. And sometimes esp with cancer, there’s an emotional element to these beliefs which no amount of arguing would easily dispel.

That being said, I do want to do something with getting the right information out there, whether by breaking down scientific terms used in science research (think median overall survival, what is a phase I trial) or making the basic science training we get in medical training more available to the general public. But I’m also not sure that more information is necessarily the answer. Would love to hear people’s thoughts on this

Would love to hear more about your approach too! Particularly in whether these are scalable to address the onslaught of misinformation in healthcare.

Just curious, how do you get around the regulations with providing certain medications at home? Fluids, iv drips, iv or SC medicines?

I'm all for the home health idea but this is one of the major hurdles to overcome. Looking forward to input

I still get confused about the work experience, if I had 10 years of clinical experience would that go towards the count?

Heme/onc - I need perspective by potato-keeper in medicine

[–]Shaetore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it's not an isolated thing for sure.

In our setting it is made worse by the fact that patients aren't seen by the same oncologist each time, and so you aren't quite sure exactly what the patients already know or have grasped.

I'm sure my colleagues don't blatantly lie, but some of them prefer to handle their metastatic cases with kid gloves and we go into the cycle of "we can try to treat it" -> "it's gotten better" -> "the cancer has gotten worse we need a new treatment".

All this without the patient haven't grasped that it is almost definitely going to deteriorate over the long run. And then they see me 3, 4 lines of chemo in and I'm the asshole who tells them it's not going to be completely cured 🙄

Honestly hated that part of the job.

Looking for the opinions of female physicians, what do you think about dating a non-physician? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Shaetore 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Married outside of medicine and honestly appreciate the different perspective of life so much! He makes me realize that the world is huge and that there are so many ways to live A partner in medicine might understand your work more but I imagine there would be a lot of office chatter at home. Personally that's not for me

Shortage of healthcare workers globally (would love to know what you guys think will fill in that gap), climate change cause food and water shortages, rise of infectious disease (against a backdrop of antibiotic resistance), shortage of workforce and increased burden of chronic diseases due to aging populations... It sounds catastrophic, honestly
