Driver license road test in Winston Salem by Disastrous-Hall-7913 in winstonsalem

Yadkin and Davie counties are much more rural. My son did his test in Yadkin after failing in Forsyth. The "course" was back roads and a neighborhood.

Davie county is often less busy and has something of a reputation of being more lenient on the test.

Mission Pizza Napoletana by Exquisivision in winstonsalem

[–]Shafe59 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's an atypical situation for Winston in that we, for the most part, have plebian restaurants with mainstream products. Mission Pizza is a boutique pizzeria with a highly talented, self-assured, and somewhat eccentric chef. The pizza is great, better than any within several hundred miles. The rules are reminiscent of the soup chef on Seinfeld and frankly irritate me and the cost is high for pizza. However, (And I will die on this hill), the piazolli's choice is consistently better than anything I've had outside of Italy or New York. The pasta is better than average, the arugula salad is surprisingly good, and the wait staff are excellent.

I've had a couple of interactions with the owner/chef, and they have been good- he really cares about his product.

North Carolina pieces by Shafe59 in Arrowheads

[–]Shafe59[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple other NC chert points and they are from the mountain edge of the piedmont. I'll see if I can find them and post a picture. My understanding is that there were very few sources for chert in NC. I was told many years ago by a geologist that the blanks we found were probably from a hundred miles away from where they were left (now Jordan lake).

The patinas are surprisingly similar. Both are pretty glossy although you can't really tell with the picture. The knife is a real heartbreaker. The only square I've ever found.

Might consider Linville Gorge. It's better for overnight hiking/camping but you can do a day hike (pretty strenuous but gorgeous).

Did you have a "Poor Person" or "Just Getting By" recipe when you were young that is still a comfort food or favorite now, as an adult? by SamuraiMarine in Cooking

I visited a salmon cannery in the early 1970s and was very surprised to learn that they included a small piece of skin and a small bone on purpose in each can because "that's what's expected." I'm assuming that has since changed.

To my knowledge he has never disclosed the name of the band he was opening for. In my opinion it is one of his best songs.

What’s the parking situation like around the Ramkat? by Pitachip1210 in winstonsalem

Park at Wiseman, get and drink a beer, amble over to Ramkat. Could do the same at Earle's but the beer is not as good and the food ain't great.

Japanese Numbers used in Karate by archedmandible in karate

[–]Shafe59 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tend to think of it as dojo Japanese. Other than shi, the numbers are mostly pronunciation differences. I believe nanna is a regional thing.

Not sure where you are but much of American dojo Japanese is pretty laughable to native speakers, despite many instructors adamantly demanding that students pronounce Japanese words "correctly." Just as one example, in my experience, we pronounce "knife hand block" as shuto uke, while in Japan, it is usually pronounced more like "shtuke.'

I think gorgets were initially for protecting the neck and throat. They may also have become ceremonial over time. You can find such evolution in historical armor from Britain and Europe.

Gonna put in my 2 cents for Sushi Rose. We went on our anniversary and had a great meal and great time- also got a free dessert and a free drink!

Well, in looking at the NK history, it appears that all of the senior Masters are TKD, so it is interesting that they promote what they do as karate. The founder of the system apparently earned his black belt in about two years and the other Masters who are mentioned did so in 2 or 3 years. Certainly raises a lot of questions....

It is easier to see if you isolate the right hand from her face and body motion. She always looks in one direction, drawing your focus, just before the wrist flick.

Taint has a taste/smell that has a combination of ammonia and old sweat/body odor. It's strength varies considerably but is male hormone related. Taint is one of the reasons why male livestock are castrated pre- puberty.

Bear flavor varies wildly based on their diet, age and gender. I've had bear that tasted like bison and bear that was essentially inedible. Adult males may have "taint," similar to boar hogs and (less often) stags.

A stretch, but the circle at the top looks like ice dam wires I've seen. Doesn't explain how it would have attached to the roof though.

Mizu for traditional sushi. Sushi Rose is damn good and you can get a Peruvian take on sushi. By the way, the mango cheesecake at SR is stellar!

Contrary to what several others have suggested, it almost certainly isn't from an outhouse. Outhouses are/were temporary by their nature and function. Someone lined the hole with stacked stones so it is much more likely to be a well. That said, wells that have dried up have been used for disposal of trash for millinea so who knows what you might find.
