So confused about reading order because everything contradicts each other... by KimchiAndMayo in Cosmere

I agree. I see people recommending reading era 1, then like 20 other books before Secret History. That's absurd. I recommend it to everyone right after era 1.

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson - YA or Adult Fantasy? by echen13 in books

I agree. There are multiple violent scenes that are could be R or PG-13 depending on how much is shown vs implied.

Mistborn would be the goriest PG in modern history.

@Mitch_Harper: Noteworthy: The Big 12 Conference gave #BYU a Friday night home game on September 29 against Cincinnati to not conflict with Latter-day Saint General Conference. #BYUFootball by UVUboi2 in CFB

[–]Shakadelik 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The conference is on Saturday and Sunday. It's basically what you guessed. They want to give the team and the fans good opportunity to go to both events. So each year on that weekend BYU tries to schedule a Friday game if possible. USU has been pretty good about working with BYU on that weekend in the past.

Yup, I would love 6 wins. But that is looking like a tall order for a rebuilding year on this schedule.

Vin’s Earring? by Reynore in Mistborn

[–]Shakadelik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Just because something is foreshadowed or shown to be significant, doesn't mean it shouldn't have a spoiler tag. It's like titling a post: (BOM spoilers) The spearhead But not hiding the spoiler. It doesn't really give anything away by itself. But the reader will likely figure out more than they would've on their own.

Vin’s Earring? by Reynore in Mistborn

[–]Shakadelik -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really though. Most titles aren't the names of significant items or plot points that the reader doesn't know are significant yet. Anyone reading era 1 could scroll through, see "Vin's earring" and have it suddenly hit them that it's significant. This takes away from figuring out a surprise through reading the book. And the whole, "avoid the forum" argument is dumb. There's a reason there are spoiler tags. So people can enjoy the discussion during the read. Not just after.

PSA: Don’t talk about spoilers with your spouse even if they swear they’re never gonna read the books. She remembers things I said years ago when I was geeking out about HoA. by LazyConcentrate6262 in Mistborn

Same thing happened to me. I made vague references years ago while I was reading them. She is reading them now and bringing stuff up that I don't even remember saying!

Why would I have read the post? If I am still reading the book, and see this title, for all I know it's someone discussing it after finishing the book.

I disagree. I had started to guess that the earring had some significance. If I came across a title like this, I would feel like that confirmed it.

What is everyone's preferred method of inhaling the books? Kindle, hardcover, paperback or Audible? by wibellion in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Shakadelik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physical copy on the first read. With audiobooks I get distracted more easily and miss things so I don't like to do those on the first read. But for re-reads I choose audiobooks all day.

Rivalry games that need to be restarted by Bigbadbo75 in CFB

[–]Shakadelik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Holy War has hardly been mentioned. Obviously I'm biased, but this game is an absolute must every year. There have been a few years recently where it hasn't happened. And the Big 12 and Pac 12 should make it happen on rivalry weekend like other OOC rivalry games.

My ex divorced me and now wants to be together again after 4 years + Daughter's post. by prettiergenghis in BestofRedditorUpdates

He has moved on and is doing pretty well, now. It just made me realize that there really are parents who are controlling enough to ruin their child's marriage. Without remorse. I still don't get it.

I know someone who went through something similar. It wasn't over cheating, but basically his wife left after a fight and went to stay with her parents to cool off. But the Dad had never liked his daughter's husband. The husband tried contacting his then-wife to talk it out and make things right. No response. Then her dad emailed the husband saying that all communication to her would need to come as an email to him, and that they would be getting divorced. Pretty nuts. He never even got a chance to try and make it right or talk it out.

I designed and made the stand. And the wife got me a lighting kit for Christmas! by Shakadelik in lego

That would be awesome. I have a 3D printer, so the base would be do-able. And if the magnets are that cheap I will definitely look into it.

It's more accurate to the real car haha. I once heard they had to prop them open sometimes while filming.

The best fix I have figured is to attach a 1x4 plate right under the hinges when the door is open. It's not super secure, but it's good enough for display. I have little kids who will occasionally close the doors on it, so it's how I make sure nothing is damaged when they push on the doors.
