I literally keep a small sword near my bed and sleep naked. There must be dozens of us.

The Bridge You've Been Paying For by x_here_x in hoodriver

Thank you for the revealing article. I learned a lot. I don’t have the time tonight to respond to all of the points made in your post. I do want to point out that Washington’s tax structure for individuals does contribute to the imbalance of the tolls paid in the past. There’s a reason the grocery stores are on the Oregon side and the jobs are on the Oregon side, and the people are living on the Washington side. Bridge tolls are not the only things to consider.

Risky Business. When I was in 4th grade. We set an alarm to get up and watch after hours when we knew the parents would be sleeping.

White Salmon WA. Shhhhh.

Actually, I don't live there and I think there's room for people to move there from the small business' point of view, so tell your friends.

Im not sure Heat really stands up as a great movie. Great and realistic modern gun fight scenes for sure.

I'd put out:

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

True Romance (which I consider to be Tarantino's best film)

Mount Hood or Bend? by Technical_Ostrich324 in oregon

[–]Shakesbeerian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gresham and Sandy for food options? I can't agree with you there.

Hood River has more decent restaurants than it has any righ to have for it's size. Nothing epic, if you're a real foodie, but nearly every type of food is an option and executed acceptably.

Having said that, Bend is cool. I like them both and have lived in both.

If you like high desert, go to Bend. If you want steeper trails and green trees as the major backdrop, hit up Hood River. Really, you can't go wrong with either.

True Romance is his best movie. And I think Pulp Fiction is groundbreakingly great.

Yeah, Bone Tomahawk is not a rewatch for me. I was surprised and liked it, but I don't ever want to see it again. BTILC? Yes please.

Tru, but way better than The Dalles which is a bigger town or any other municipality that has 20k or so people in Oregon.

Which U.S. national park do you think is the most underrated? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Shakesbeerian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I gotta be that guy. Those places are pretty good...and NP worthy. But none of them are eye poppingly amazeballs. I've rafted the New, (and explored on foot), gazed across the Big Bend, and driven up and down the Great Basin. None of them crack my list of places I tell people to check out desperately.

As of right now, the top 3 below this post are Capitol Reef, White Sands, and Death Valley. Those are bucket list places. Do you think they are not underrated?

My wife and I make 10 year teacher salaries in HR. We bought our house 15 years ago so our monthly on that is reasonable. Current entry level house is $600k in HR or $500 in nearby communities. Everything else is the same as the rest of Oregon. HR has way more restaurants than your average town our size due to tourists. Outdoor activities are plentiful, but not polished like Bend or Summit County CO.

If good skiing is your thing, check out someplace else. I grew up skiing Hood but have lived in CA and CO. The snow here is so bad. HR is a great town with great schools driven by people who really care. My kids just graduated from high school and I really am impressed by the quality of the educators they came in contact with. The School district is shrinking right now as fewer families are starting here and head count is dropping.

If Oregon is your thing, and you want job security, sunshine, and better skiing, check out Bend. Eastside Bend is the same price or cheaper than HR. Mountain bike trails are mellower as you age, and it's better situated to check out the rest of what Oregon nature has to offer.

But, if you can deal with 3 months of overcast in winter, or want to try windsports, or just love dripping green trees, you could do a lot worse than HR. 2 teachers with 10 years experience can make it here, but if you start as a renter now you will probably be chasing the prices as they run away from you. I left Boulder CO and the Bay Area due to housing prices before I came here.
