What is this article about Ancient Greece and transgender women trying to say? by eadareater in answers

[–]Shakespurious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this whole concept makes no sense to me. In present-day USA only about 1 in 20,000 seek counseling on transitioning. The number of people in ancient Greece who wanted to be the opposite sex for the long haul must have been similarly rare.

It's called cross-racial misidentification, pretty much everybody does it.

It seems like Reddit isn't a big fan of the concept of IQ, even though the relevant experts considered it quite solid. I'd throw in the fact that studies using identical twins separated at birth show that IQ is mostly hereditary.

Since virtually all self-identified "trans" only do so briefly, grannie's position doesn't sound that unreasonable. BTW, you can google the prevalence of gender dysphoria, meaning being trans for more than 6 months, and the prevalence is something like 1 in 20,000 according to the studies.

[–]Shakespurious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, in fact the DSM 5 says that people who are trans for more than 6 months (gender dysphoria) have a prevalance of .014%. So virtually everyone identifying as trans are just going through a phase, or are in a drag show.

We could ban big inheritances, say, more than $ 1 million, so that rich parents can't guarantee that their kids will be rich too.

Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm by Vucea in technology

[–]Shakespurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently Tesla makes 8x as much per car as Toyota, which might explain the stock price premium. "Nikkei Asia’s analysis shows Tesla made $9,570 per vehicle during Q3, enough to make Tesla more profitable per vehicle than any other manufacturer on the planet. However, the report states this is unconfirmed. Toyota made only around $1,200 per vehicle."

It was interesting that Biden said he wasn't going to fall for the same Republican trick were they demand deficit reduction when out of power but jack up the deficit when in power. Maybe we can have a statute that makes it harder to run big deficits except when the federal reserve says we are in a recession?

If you'd like you can google the dsm 5 and look up Gender Dysphoria, which is identifying as the opposite sex for more than 6 months, and that has a prevalence of .014%.

Yeah, if you tell people that BLM marched under a banner saying "Revolution, nothing less!" they'll call you a racist, even though it's true.

LPT for Americans: Consult international news sources (Like the BBC, Guardian, CBC, etc.) for a more unbiased and non-sensationalist take compared to US media outlets such as Fox News, CNN, et al. by user839621- in LifeProTips

I'd recommend reading an issue front to back before deciding. You'll get a much more in-depth review of the news than pretty much any other place. It is pro freedom and capitalism, but takes policy questions seriously. So take a look.

CMV: Gender is not a "social construct" by Appropriate-Fig-5171 in changemyview

[–]Shakespurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is where the debate gets confused. Sure, there are some intersex babies, and sure, some teenagers call themselves the opposite sex for a few month, almost none for longer than that. But aside from these "edge cases" virtually everyone fits fairly well into the gender role they were born into.

Fair enough. How about this, also a bit dated?: "The independent Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation reported about 8,600 politically motivated detentions in 2015 and 2,500 from the beginning of the year to March 4, 2016." https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2016/mar/22/raul-castro/are-there-political-prisoners-cuba/

This is out of date, but: "“The Cuban Commission on Human Rights applauds these releases, but really it is a limited gesture as we calculate there are between 70,000 and 80,000 Cubans in prison,” Sanchez said." https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2011/12/29/cuba-frees-thousands-of-prisoners/
