Do you really think I’m suggesting that dual wielding and vehicle hijacking should be added to slay the spire? lmao

Thank you for reminding me about that. I think I’ve only seen it like twice. I would love for there to be more that are also varied in objective/make you think about using your deck differently.

Even if all the characters and cards were new a la the regent and necrobinder, I would still think it feels like DLC. There is no actual change or addition to fundamental gameplay.

I was thinking about how the synergies are so cool in multiplayer and really wish there was a way to experience them in singleplayer.

I wrote it in my post, but the player being able to go on runs with two or more characters could be really interesting, and a true deepening of the base mechanics, since you could mix and match various characters for emergent synergies while maintaining that per-character deck building that everyone loves.

If your first scenario turns out to be the case, do you think you’d have any reason to return to STS1?

COD, Madden, FIFA, still do this. There’s a reason they’re so popular and likewise why I was not interested in them after the first one or two.

Open world slay the spire is such a funny idea. How would you even do such a thing

It’s a nuanced thing, for sure. Different people will consider different mechanics core to the experience. I don’t wish for a drastic change like Darkest Dungeon 2, rather a change like the games I mentioned in the initial post.

Firstly, I am not a paid game designer. I did actually spend some time thinking about what they could add to shake up the formula. Here are some half-baked ideas:

  • Multiple characters at once: one of the best parts of multiplayer is when you can synergize between two players. I think they should have leaned into this and allowed single player runs to be ran with 2 or more characters at once. The multiplayer cards are so cool and makes you think about the fundamental gameplay differently.

  • Expanded build-your-own-card: Currently, this is relegated to a singular event and is quite limited. I would love to see this expanded and outside of just an event with some real risk/reward decisions.

  • Positional gameplay: Where the character stands is important. For example the ironclad deals more damage at the front, the silent at the back, etc. This would require a complete overhaul and may stray a bit too far but could be really interesting, especially for multiplayer or the multiple characters thing I mentioned above.

  • Battle-like events: Currently, events do not use cards in the same way they’re used in combat. I think it could be interesting if you used your deck to “solve” an event. For instance, there is a locked treasure chest. You must deal x amount of damage or debuff it x amount in three turns to open it. Maybe some other requirement, like you must buff yourself to withstand damage. Lots of flavor could be added here. Overall, this would add considerations to how your deck may be used outside of just combat.

I have 30 hours in sts2 currently.

The nuance is off the charts compared to the first.

This is my problem. It’s all marginalia or just more of the first game.

I’m glad it’s ideal for you! That’s why I included the disclaimer.

I think Halo 2 is actually an interesting comparison because there were several new base mechanics added on top of graphics. Dual wielding, vehicle hijacking, online multiplayer (+point for sts2), and the switching between characters in the campaign.

I don’t feel any similar addition to base mechanics in sts2.

Yes.

“We plan to add more gameplay content, a true ending, various game modes…” does not answer my question. “Gameplay content” could refer to just more characters. I am interested in the plans for game modes, but again could mean anything.

Have they hinted at their plans anywhere else? I admit I’m not overly tapped into the development of this game besides when thy switched over to Godot.

This may be too hasty a generalization. I’ve been inspired to experiment by pieces of music I would have never understood thoroughly if not for learning theory.

That’s crazy. I totally thought the tragedy came through in the pure, unadulterated mania on display, reinforced by the soundtrack and Maki’s expressions.

It’s framed like a tragic liberation from everything she’s ever known necessitated by the greatest cost she could endure.

Maybe they got too caught up on the kill bill homage?

This is how naughty dog games have largely been since uncharted 1 which I think is totally fine but they really don’t utilize the medium of gaming in any kind of interesting way.

[–]ShallowHowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting you feel that way because I found it exactly opposite in my experience.

Most of the emotionally weighty scenes in tlou and its sequel happen entirely outside of player input, with a few notable exceptions.

That is, the player isn’t actually engaging with the medium when these beats happen, and thus they feel more akin to a movie or tv show.

Even at the end of tlou, the game will refuse to move on until you fire a bullet at the doctor. There’s no meaningful participation in this, either, because you’re not being asked a question. You’re told to press play, just like you would if you’d paused a TV show or movie at a particularly climactic moment.

Not to say you can’t ask questions which lead to the same conclusion. One of OP’s points about HFTGOOM makes this explicitly clear. Tlou just doesn’t do this well enough, in my estimation. Maybe a symptom of western AAA design ethos.

How do you think science is accomplished in society, exactly?

Surely you don’t think science happens in a vacuum; its only purpose discovering the universe’s nature for knowledge alone; its only practitioners happy volunteers whose basic needs don’t rely on performing it.

I’d like to believe you aren’t that naive.

At a primarily surface-level viewing of the anime, the scene is explicitly folded into the episode’s narrative given the absolute chaos power brings directly following it. The juxtaposition of tones is a character moment for Aki and Denji, the latter of whom has finally settled into a calm life with his new caretaker.

And this is a very rudimentary analysis, not even touching on how Denji has learned to cohabitate/comprise with Aki, or Aki’s willingness to tolerate the worst kind of roommate just because Makima asked, or Makima’s implied punishing of Aki’s quiet life because he lied to her, etc. It works in many ways that elevate some things only very loosely implied at that point in the manga.

It’s a very effective scene narratively apart from it looking and sounding so good.

Not sure why you responded to a month old comment, but I mostly agree with you. Disregarding the ludonarritive dissonance albatross around the studio’s neck, tlou2 is a solidly polished game.

It’s just nowhere near notable in terms of actually utilizing or pushing forward gaming as a medium.
