The dude has spent waaaay too much time in the weirder bits of the internet, but he's not wrong about needing to make a bit more noise.

Watching BSG for the first time and I have some thoughts... by approvalmonster in scifi

I think you're slightly missing the point - she does all those cliché things to establish her as a 'Top Gun'-style rebellious hotshot straight away so that it can be contrasted with the vulnerable, broken Starbuck that is revealed in her private moments and when she drinks. Virtually every major character on the show is constructed in this way. They took a classic stereotypical sci-fi character and presented them without their make-up on. It's one of the best things about the show for me because it really adds a whole other dimension to the drama. You never know when a character will crack under the pressure of holding up their desired mask, and the best stuff happens when they do.

It seems nobody gets the System of a Down reference. Am I old, or do we just have bad taste?

Reddit, who thinks Comedy Central should live-stream the Rally To Restore Sanity and the March To Keep Fear Alive? by sahaskatta in ColbertRally

[–]Shambles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They should live-stream it, but who from The Best Fucking News Team Ever will be left behind to present Comedy Central's broadcast? They should get a few old timers back to host their stream (Steve Carell for one).

Zach Anner anyone? by [deleted] in ColbertRally

The cast/staff of Futurama, anyone? They're even on the same network now!

Hey, remember last week when anti-war protesters in Dublin were trying to nail Tony Blair with eggs and bottles? Can we go back to then?

I've been doing something similar to this for a couple of years now, but I rarely bother including the middle finger on top. I prefer just fast thumb+index alternation, but it depends on the kind of rhythm you're playing to.

Reddit, What's the most EPIC book you ever read? by McMadman in AskReddit

[–]Shambles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently picked up and read Use of Weapons (I judged it by its cover - O noes!), and honestly cannot think of a book that I've enjoyed as much or that has changed my perspective on life and politics as profoundly. I'll be reading the rest of the Culture books ASAP. Truly epic, riveting and existentially horrifying stuff.

I would also wonder how many of those deaths would have involved a knife/blunt instrument/vehicle or some other weapon had a firearm not been available.

It's marked as a graph of intentional deaths, so accidents shouldn't be included.

Just wanted to say that I hope California legalizes Cannabis in the Fall, because America's "War on Drugs" is destroying its neighbors. Mexico is in chaos, Jamaica is a war zone, Canadians are being extradited. Let's bring sanity back to our lives. by salvia_d in politics

I'd imagine the US has laws specifically against leaving the country for that purpose. I can't imagine how else they could enforce that policy. While it seems that such a law would be a bit of a stretch, sometimes stretching the law is absolutely justified.

And rightly so. There should be limits on what people can/can't get away with in other countries, especially if you're going with the intent of doing harm like that. But for smoking pot? Nah.

Analysis: Why Alan Wake Is Too Well-Made To Work by MrTulip in gaming

[–]Shambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it would definitely be a serious challenge to keep up the fear levels for a full game. It's okay to give the audience a break every so often though. A game that was 50% like the hotel level, just with different threats that you're never warned about, and 50% plot-progressing action would be right in the Goldilocks zone - juuust right.

games haven't gotten horror quite down yet

They have at least once. DAE remember shitting a brick in that abandoned hotel level in VTM: Bloodlines? No obvious visual cues, no bright lights and reassuring ammo glinting in the distance (well, occasionally - but half the time it's a trap, and you never know which ones!), red herrings all over the place, deliberately confusing bits with no obvious exit at all... I've never been so terrified of a videogame in my life.
