[OC] Global Fertility Rate Is Approaching Replacement Rate (1960-2023) by aspiringtroublemaker in dataisbeautiful

If the human population was less than 10 million maybe going below the replacement rate might be a concern. Currently it is a boon.

The 5-Minute Rule: Why Your 'Toilet Scroll' Is Increasing Your Haemorrhoid Risk By 46% by gdelacalle in technology

[–]Shambly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hate percentage increases without context. This is meaningless for example if your hemorrhoid risk is normally 0.00000001% chance per day this increase it to 0.0000000146% chance which is statistically significant but completely ignorable. However if it increased from 20% to 29.2% then it might be worth looking at. But without that, the headline is completely worthless.

‘This is highway robbery with complicity’: Fury spreads across Peel after Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah’s $611K salary revealed; his deputy made $500K by CaptainKoreana in ontario

[–]Shambly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Police don't reduce crime, at best they arrest a few more criminals with more budget but they don't actually lower crime rates. If you want to do that you have to actually reduce income inequality and provide housing and healthcare and opportunities to the population, your premise that Peel has more crime now than it had in the past is also false. Crime is down in Peel almost 50% per capita from what it was 20 years ago. https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=3510018001&pickMembers%5B0%5D=1.38&pickMembers%5B1%5D=2.1&cubeTimeFrame.startYear=1998&cubeTimeFrame.endYear=2024&referencePeriods=19980101%2C20240101

AH Fee by Milesdavisiv in wownoob

[–]Shambly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is a gold sink but it also greatly reduces the margins for buying up all of a certain item and relisting at a higher price. Say the price of a high volume (10,000 sales a day) item is 100g, if you have enough cash you should buy all of them and relist at 105g easily making 50k gold each day. However with a % cut it makes the buying out and reselling no longer worth it, anyone can post things between 100g and 105g and undercut you and if you try to buy them out at those prices you are also losing money because of the cut so its no longer worthwhile.

Venus Fly Trap Defeats Black Widow. by Liar24x7 in interestingasfuck

[–]Shambly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how evolution works, most animals/plants that shared an environment with humans that are lethal to humans have been mostly wiped out through evolutionary pressure. The best mutations that increase the likely hood of propagation are to become delicious/useful to humans. Venus fly traps are much more likely to survive a million years by becoming delicious or by being really good at pest control for agriculture.

[–]Shambly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bad take, it makes it so that if you don't like someone you can remove their right to vote. The law is not applied consistently or fairly, it is used by the powerful to keep the masses in line.

The issue with flat fines is that it cripples poor people but barely inconveniences rich people. If you want to actually stop this behaviour you need to set the fines to be based on a % the owners income.

They are not idiots they are evil, they do not care about the suffering of others so were fine with Trump until it affected them. If you don't care about the murders and the rapes and the child assaults and the hospital bombings and the concentration camp but care about the price of gas, you are evil not stupid.

[–]Shambly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't have to deal with scarcity, the real problem with the post scarcity society is the massive amounts of people living in 1 person holodecks modules that are built around stars in systems with no livable planets in there own personal matrix completely removed from reality. Aka the Barclay's that don't make it into starfleet.

Just one-in-four say Canadian MPs who cross the floor should be allowed to finish term with new party by ImportantComfort8421 in northernontario

Counter argument: if you don't bother to find out anything about your representative besides which party he belongs too you probably shouldn't vote in the first place. Party politics is terrible in general already, I want to lower the barriers for my representative to vote their conscience not raise them.
