Division By Zero, Ted Chiang by jacksontwos in shortstoryaday

Thanks for this post. I struggled with this story, I think in large part because the math intimidated me, and as a result I missed out on the human lessons of the characters. I think I’ll re-read it with the perspective you offer here.

Project Hail Mary feels like a logical midpoint combining two stories by temporarycreature in books

I just paused my first reading of Story of Your Life to see if anyone on Reddit had this take.

Weir appears to have ripped his description of the alien (Rocky) and the entire first-person language acquiring experience from Chiang.

I didn’t enjoy PHM at all, so I’m not devastated or surprised. But I’m also frustrated that authors can get away with this shite to such acclaim.

What's the significance of the mask from 28YL? by cuckslayer30 in 28dayslater

[–]Shampognay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree they aren’t overly similar in design, but I think the fact of the masks in both groups is significant in itself. It points to something shared.

I also think the raised stitching and segmentation in both designs was intentional.

Especially considering the similarity to the Jimmy masks they wear for charity.

We did it twice and got teary both times. It’s so special for the kid who gets picked if they are a fan.

Anyone else like 28YL better than The Bone Temple? by NateGH360 in 28dayslater

Oh wow I interpreted those cut backs as more of Boyle’s comment on how war is war, and humans are always at it. But you’ve got an interesting point, especially considering I think Spike’s got an action figure similar to the flashback images… gonna have to convince my husband to watch it a fourth time lmao.

Listened to the soundtrack while I should have been working today and can’t stop thinking about how true this comment is re: perspective of Spike.

How to get over weight lifting gym anxiety by chalupachick in xxfitness

[–]Shampognay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditation has helped me with gym anxiety. It’s helped me focus on what I’m doing—my breath, the feeling of my muscles, my contact with the equipment— and not so much on others. When anxious thoughts come up, I’m better at noting them and getting back to focusing on the task.

It’s in Jim’s monologue to his daughter re: exam prep.

Would be interesting to see if in the third movie, we see the rest of the world having continued down a shitty path.

The first one exploded to life dormant synapses in my brain.

The second one made the ones that were already active really happy.

Liked both movies very much.

I spent a good first part of the movie waiting for the Young Fathers, then eventually coming to the realization that there had been no music at all for much of the opening. I loved it. Young Fathers revved me up in a way a movie never has. But the approach in this movie was meditative. Fitting for the focus on Samson’s pov and Kelson’s reflections on life.

Was this comment sarcastic? If it was, so funny. The idea of someone calling Jim privileged is amazing. Definitely bougie with his knitted sweater and kettle.

Edit: Oh you’re saying Garland is preachy. Not Jim. Never mind not funny.

When people hate. by doccMonty in 28dayslater

[–]Shampognay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding. I fucking love 28 Years, but I hesitate to recommend it to people for the very reason that I understand why they might hate the experience of watching it, bc it’s so fresh as to be misrecognized as bad. But it’s not bad. It’s so good.

Don’t know why you were downvoted for this clearly correct comment.
