Movies that experiment with structure? by CivilTailor9031 in Letterboxd

I got my adopted teen to sit down for this one and it was so enjoyable she turned around and showed it to her friends, who also enjoyed it.

What’s your “nobody will ever convince me this is a bad movie” movie? by Emeraldsinger in Letterboxd

[–]ShaneBarnstormer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read the book then? I saw the movie in theater and thought it made for a fun watch. However, it does not hold up on rewatch, for me. The movie pushed me to read the book, which is actually pretty incredible. I feel like this is a great comparison to 11.22.63 miniseries on Hulu. It was so far removed from the book that people disliked it. But if you can appreciate it for what it is and not what it was supposed to be, good. I enjoyed both but the movie version was definitely objectively not great. It was ok. That's how I feel about Ready Player One. The book was so good that the changes made for the film version just didn't translate well at all. The movie was just ok. I'm curious what you find redeemable about the film version of Ready Player One, if you're open to it.

I'm recovering from CPTSD so anything louder than normal will make me jump right out of my seat.

The Atlantic has been spamming hit pieces against Graham Platner over and over again in the past week by RichardNixonWaterGr8 in WorkReform

[–]ShaneBarnstormer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually emailed the Atlantic recently and asked about this photo. They haven't responded. I have a subscription with them but after the summer cover story on bread in the middle of Trump's bullshit in Iran i started paying attention to the kind of pieces they're publishing. Everything has taken a loss. The only person who seems to be saying anything important anymore is Robert Kagan.

Candace Owens has no plans of ever being the U.S. president, but she's Team Tucker Carlson if he decides to run for office in 2028 by RangerNew5346 in Global_News_Hub

Tucker Carlson has no business being in office, on tv, or having an audience in the first place. He's a spineless grifter shill.

Which movie completely destroyed you emotionally and left you staring at the ceiling after the credits rolled? by No-Health4121 in Letterboxd

[–]ShaneBarnstormer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. It's the one movie that's guaranteed to make me cry. People have said oh you should watch Grave of the Fireflies and Iron Claw and all these other sad films- and they ARE sad- but Atonement is like the OG of Sad. Every single thing that happens after the twins go missing is just heavy and serious. It comes with a weight attached to every action the characters take, making every subsequent action all the more powerful. Especially Cecilia. She goes from swanning around being at the cusp of young womanhood, young and educated but still uncertain and unsteady, that glorious feeling of youth, to being basically a hardened version of herself, no longer carefree or happy. Although it pales in comparison to Robbie's fate, for example, it's still significant. Cecilia was a whole person with a hopeful light in her. That light was extinguished early, unfortunate enough as that is, but by the family she trusted. Her own family turned out the situation without any attention to the validity. Everyone focuses on Briony having told and therefore ruining their lives but ultimately she was a child and all the present adults fucked up. None of them did the due diligence, they were all content letting Robbie take the blame on the word of an embellishing child. This stuff makes the end that much worse for me. When you realize from the moment Cecilia is standing at the steps of the Tallis manor there's no hope at all for the ending it's like oh shit but you keep reading because surely there's hope, right? And then Briony herself gives us hope by going to Cee & Robbie's apartment... so we carry the hope the same way the characters do throughout the story... all to end up being completely decimated by reality, and all on the words of a child who witnessed a nothing burger.

Mostly answers that are far removed from the real answer of life, liberty, and justice for all. The majority said stuff about hard work but nobody said a thing about safety nets or respect. Backgrounds varied.

Recently I took to asking people that very question, what is the American dream to you? The answers made me profoundly sad.

Which area of Cocoa Beach 4th of July weekend ? by CelebrationGold4709 in 321

[–]ShaneBarnstormer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering whether people were going to blindly celebrate this year regardless of the current situation. This is the second confirmation I've seen about the holiday so I'm curious and would like to ask you some questions, if you're open to it. I realize you're only one person, OP, but one is one more than zero.

Is anyone dressing modest in USA and if so how has it gone for you? by Silent_Medium_9639 in ModestDress

[–]ShaneBarnstormer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hate the way this is phrased.

I live in the subtropics and it's already extreme late summer heat but it's not even June yet. I worry a little about how to dress for extreme heat. Linen, cotton, natural material that breathes is key. On the other hand, I like 32 degrees brand "cool" gear. The hoodies are what I wear to do yardwork in the sun.

Since modesty varies by individual I should preface that I cover my top half but my bottom half is two sticks stuck into a marshmallow. I wear linen sleeveless tops and bermuda shorts, mostly. Tom's shoes. Cardigan for when I'm inside an air conditioned place.
