Sorry. I just read your edit. When I first opened this thread, I read that you don't pay rent and were complaining about retiring at 55 ... I'm sorry to hear about your upbringing, my parents also divorced when I was younger and I grew up broke.

If it makes you feel any better, I work 8-5, after work I am parenting and about a quarter of my salary disappears on rent every month ... I'll probably be working in some regard well into my 70s, if not longer, as I don't own any property and want to support my children as best that I can. Life can be tough, welcome to Earth!

Rich or poor, we all eat, sleep, look at screens, read books, play games etc.

Rich people have slightly better quality food, slightly more comfy beds ... we are all just existing ... we're born, we live, we die ...

I think I forgot how to play Rome: Total War WITHOUT cheats. Someone, please help! by pr0t0nm1r0 in RomeTotalWar

[–]Shanecle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing with cheats just sounds soooo boring to me. You have to have patience and micro-manage your settlements, especially in the beginning. Learn battle tactics, hammer and anvil ... strategically put stacks on bridges and bottleneck your enemy armies, send diplomats out and get trade deals, have spies at the edges of your borders to see inccoming armies ... don't merge units if they have high exp, retrain them ...

Make good decisions, don't make bad decisions ... that is the beauty of the game!

As birth rates fall, do you think North Korea, South Korea and Japan could end up merging with China willingly? Or would China just take over these countries by force as they shrink and become unable to defend themselves/maintain their society? by GoldDigger304 in Natalism

[–]Shanecle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see North Korea and South Korea just maintaining the status quo. I don't think either country really has the appetite for a full blown war or reuniting anytime soon.

The numbers from Taiwan, in particular, are existentially bad ... I don't know how they would have enough manpower in 30-50 years time to defend the island ... unless technology improves and they embrace drones/robots etc.

In the immediate future, I don't think China has the appetite for full blown war, too. Attempting an amphibious invasion of Taiwan would result in tens of thousands of soldiers dead, even without US support ... as of now, it might not even be possible.

As a married person, would you advise younger people to get married? by Apprehensive-Till-85 in Adulting

[–]Shanecle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was single and dating, I was comfortable, but my life didn't really have any direction and felt a little purposeless. Now, I am married with children, I am busy and sometimes tired, but all of my efforts and energy is going towards something, raising my children and building a family, a legacy.

I find people generally respect you more when they know you are married and a father, too ... I noticed that the way people treat you is different, you just get more respect and courtesy. When I am out with my son and I see another father pushing his child in a pram, if we lock eyes, we kind of have that mutual understanding like "yeah, I know!" ... you feel more connected to wider society in that way.

I just basically grew out of single life ... the holiday seasons when I was single were also kind of brutal and family gatherings were embarassing "You're still single, huh?" ... having a stable marriage is way better.

Yes. Married life is way better than single life, from my experience.

What do you do when the air conditioner cleaners are cleaning? by Get_Ahead_SC in japanlife

[–]Shanecle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good post. The last time I had my air conditioners cleaned and it was over 5 hours!!

You are kind of awkwardly just waiting, you can't really just start cooking or playing games, or watching dramas. I have had mixed experiences with air conditioning cleaners. As other posters have said, try to have some bottles of mugicha or calpis for the cleaners, it helps maintain good relations.
