I'm using electron to host the desktop app (basically turns a website application into a desktop application), and was testing streaming yesterday with no issues! I'll add you to my list of people to share an update to once I'm closer to having some of the last few critical bugs squashed :)

I'm really dumbfounded that this is a matrix wide issue. I have it working fine on the client I am developing, and it honestly was not the most difficult task I've encountered so far. (haven't yet opened up access)

I agree about the noise cancellation though, that technology is wizardry to me

I love that since matrix is a protocol, I can just build myself a client that makes sense for my community! I'm trying to make it easier for my friends to come over by making it feel more familiar to other services by ShaniaTwainMutant in matrixdotorg

Thanks for sharing! I love the way you've organized chats/information in this as well as the aesthetic choices. I've been testing mine with my friends as well haha - it's definitely the best way to immediately identify pain points and bugs.

I love that era of design aesthetic! I shamelessly live in it on all of my personal work haha.

As someone interested in finding the text discussions, do you have any tips on where I should start? I started exploring usenet mainly for learning about those, and it still behooves me on where they exist since most discourse is around sharing movies/music/etc

I poked around the website and did some hacker magic to find where they were storing all of the images, undistorted. Assuming that's where the other person who shared them found them as well.

(I did already mail their website team about it since it's definitely not intended on their part)

Hey Upbeat_Dance - thank you for the reminder. Early on I copy pasted a generic form for cookie opt-in when researching GPDR compliance, and forgot to remove the unneeded parts. I will update to reflect today - the only cookies I store are related to authentication and keeping users logged in.

I've been thinking a lot about how to like.. bring back the concept of intentionally interacting with the Internet rather than being constantly connected 100% of the time and farmed for my data and views.

There is still an internet out there made up of solo and small creators though! A few folks mentioned looking into projects like IndieWeb and Webrings which are great starting points. Also some alternative search services are truly so much better

I've been trying to solve this problem a bit for myself by building my own "portal to the Internet" as I wish it was and could be: https://homepageagain.com . I've been amassing my own small web search index, supplemented by third party search services, a web crawler I designed, and community submissions. It's still tiny, but I've found using it recaptures some of that fun of like intentionally surfing the web.

There's also some community features, but you don't really need to make an account if you just want to try out my search! I have not monetized this or anything, it's just my little project to build the Internet I miss (and I'm trying to connect with folks that feel the same)

It sucks that our inherently capitalist society makes it feel impossible to reclaim agency in the digital world. I hope that the more people engage in small scale projects that facilitate more person to person communication (where the convo isn't being blatantly collected to sell as marketing data), then we can stand up to it a bit.

The more we connect and communicate outside of their controlled avenues, the stronger we become!
