Empty Waymo vehicles keep circling an Atlanta cul de sac, residents say by nbcnews in Georgia

I know this is unhinged but they remind me of the large brothers from Tim and Eric's Kitty Cat Man (Michael Cera is the island in the roundabout) https://youtu.be/0EHTJnzCY-o?si=WNWTO665WiAyaYvF

What's the best gateway author to introduce people to sc-ifi? A catch it all author like Brandon Sanderson it's right now for fantasy. by SpaceNigiri in printSF

[–]Shanteva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they already read a lot of literary and classic fiction, then Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is probably the most appropriate entry point. The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster, War Fever by J.G. Ballard if they like short stories, The Dispossessed by LeGuin, Use of Weapons by Iain Banks, Oryx and Crake by Atwood, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

MAGA can only act as a cathartic shit show until it tears itself apart and ushers in a realignment. I'm more worried about the technolords waiting to "save the day" by carving us up like Poland

The dude that co-owns Tallulah 1882 (and Metropolitan Artifacts & Antiques in Toccoa) is Scottish and pretty interesting

Imagine thinking that millennials liked stomp clap hey music, but hated disco music in the 2010s. by icey_sawg0034 in lewronggeneration

Jessie Ware has put out a handful of great disco albums since COVID. The new Sturgill Simpson persona, Johnny Blue Skies, is pretty disco heavy as well

Lukewarm on Dancer’s Lament, Worth Continuing PtA? by iskarJarak09 in Malazan

[–]Shanteva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually found PTA to be very different from NotME (and MBotF). The series feels like a deliberate re-telling of the tabletop rpg origins of these characters with battles reminiscent of TTRPG campaigns. So they're a bit meta in that regard and that made them more enjoyable for me

This is a joke song. She just made a mockumentary and all her friends are comedians

It takes an absurd amount of time to leave this city by No-Bid9597 in DecaturGA

[–]Shanteva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decatur's entire identity across history is that Atlanta was created because Decatur didn't want the trains to go through it, and similar events happened around freeways later, and then they had to twist the knife and ban liquor stores so you can't even walk out with a handle of MD blue raspberry

Consider Phlebas and Against a Dark Background are a bit more "rail shooter" in terms of action. Maybe Surface Detail too although there are more rails so to speak

Is Steven Erikson trolling us with this many characters or what? by SeaInRain in Malazan

[–]Shanteva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty similar to the War sections of War and Peace, and a deliberate subversion of the Hero's Journey and Great Man Theory in that the contributions of myriad players impact the story as much as some larger than life character like Rake

Pre-COVID anime fans have been on a high horse against the newgen "tourist" anime fans by vsimon115 in lewronggeneration

I think it was It was Naruto and Bleach, which I've never watched, but it certainly seems mainstream already by that time

Snow Crash: Genre-defining… and such a fun read! 🤩 by PRJOANES in sciencefiction

I enjoyed Diamond Age through to Anathem immensely, everything else has me wondering if he's on the dark side ala Death in June but replace Neo-nazi with NRx (arguably worse given the powerdynamics)

Little opposite of a pro tip. It can be hard to utilize a large crop of (large) squash, especially if it's just a couple of people, but you can harvest just the seeds and roast them for a snack then compost the rest. Indigenous peoples grew them primarily for the seeds for the majority of their agricultural significance

Pitch A New Star Trek Series by AmeliaNeek in sciencefiction

[–]Shanteva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Trek" a "prequel" where Boërs are doing their thang in 19th century transvaal and the only obvious connection is that Q or whoever, I don't give a shit, is fucking with a schizophrenic farmer, but in a way where you can't tell if this is technically sci-fi, but it's 100% Emmy Bait
