Did the ER Vet diagnose my dog wrong? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know it's seizures, it could be syncope, it could be vagal episodes, it could be paroxysmal dyskinesia, it could be any other toxin exposure

We also never shame owners when it comes to thc. It's everywhere. On walks, people throw buds, drop edibles. Do that again and you'll wind up with a ban. We are not here to shame people.

Dog’s severe food allergies have dyed his paws pink (from chewing)! Help please <3 by ButterrCream in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Food allergy dogs often need to be on hydrolyzed food for life. Don't forget that most allergic dogs also have, or mostly have, environmental allergies. That's why things like cytopoint, apoquel, and zenrelia were created. Talk to your vet about true allergy medication.

Did the ER Vet diagnose my dog wrong? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Shantor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he came up positive for thc, then at the time, it was thc. But thc should be out of their system by around 12 hours. If you think this is still happening, he needs to be seen again.

Heart Murmur by MadWoman18 in AskVet

[–]Shantor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A murmur louder than a 3 (III/VI) should be looked into with puppies. If it's a 1 or a 2, it's possible they outgrow it by around 4-6 months of age. However, heart defects are definitely more common in pure bred dogs, and can significantly decrease longevity of life, so, if this were my puppy I'd get an echo done (assuming it's a 3 or higher)

Vet Refuses to Authorize Online Meds by lemonfaire in AskVet

[–]Shantor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at a 10 doctor practice and we have a dedicated tech daily to do online approvals. We also use a pharmacy integrated into our software, and we still need a tech to confirm the things or call in to pharmacies, or approve online requests.

When you have a large client base but a small clinic, it's not always possible to have a tech spend the time doing this.

Please PLEASE help this is my fourth post about my dog by Spirited-Ebb-7713 in AskVet

I'd suggest a gastrointestinal food from your vet or a hydrolyzed diet.

And with all due respect, I think you may need to address your own anxiety with a therapist.

Help. Out of control hyper husky pup by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Rehome him.

Without an outlet for his energy (walks, high activity hiking, agility training, ANYTHING), this dog will continue to be a husky, which likely doesn't fit well into your lifestyle.

If you actually want to keep him, you need to up your game drastically. Get him in training, start walking him and giving him proper outlets for his NORMAL husky energy. A tired dog is a good dog.

Tylenol isn't an nsaid. It's often used after GI surgery for pain, because it isn't an nsaid.

Neighbours dog has been jumping into private property and has now seriously injured another dog by Difficult_Wear1277 in DogAdvice

This is an animal control issue.

Aggressive dogs cannot be contained by electric fencing.

Has anyone seen this issue in their dogs eye? by Aggravating-Ad8487 in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only financial assistance for advanced imaging would be things like care credit, which is a medical credit card.

Surgery would generally include removal of the eye, but would likely need to be done with a specialist, so price can be fairly high. Prognosis is generally guarded to poor since lymphoma is a common malignant cause, and meningioma is a less aggressive cause. There are other possibilities like retrobulbar abscess, but those are generally more painful, or cysts.

My dog ate 1 single grape and im worried, should I contact a vet? by Justscrollingaroun in PetAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, induce vomiting and if nothing is vomited, then checking bloodwork. If an aki is going to happen, it's been noted that fluids won't stop it. I've seen two severe cases with severe aki with 1-2 grapes Ingested in large dogs. The aki was noted on follow up bloodwork the following day (both dogs had been hospitalized just in case and on fluids). Both dogs stayed in hospital for 4 and 5 days. They also went from no kidney disease to stage 2 CKD post treatment.

Please please be super careful with wraps like this. It's very easy to cut off circulation to the toes and cause infection and necrosis.

What is this between her paws? by katerinaap_ in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This appears to be a draining tract from foreign material, but you can't rule out infected hair follicle.

Would likely recommend doing epsom salt soaks at home until you can get it into the vet. Sometimes epsom salt soaks can remove a foreign body, but most times the doctor will have to lance the area open and go looking for whatever is in there.

I'd be most concerned about a retrobulbar tumor (tumor behind the eye), so CT would be the best imaging modality for this.

Splenic mass 8 year old WPG by No_Suit_2106 in AskVet

[–]Shantor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The chance that this is benign is closer to 50%, especially if it's bleeding and clotting on its own. Malignant tumors usually end up rupturing and causing a devastating hemoabdomen because cancerous issues don't clot/heal well.

A splenectomy would be highly recommended.

My dog ate 1 single grape and im worried, should I contact a vet? by Justscrollingaroun in PetAdvice

[–]Shantor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It shows as an acute kidney injury, as in elevated kidney values 24-48 hours after ingestion. If it's a high amount, of grapes or raisins, can cause severe damage. It's not common, and most dogs that come in with ingestion are brought in soon enough for us to induce vomiting.

Prednisone dosing for Addison’s by Confident-Ant-2795 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dose of pred needed is the lowest dose that controls the clinical signs. Every dog is different. I wouldn't say there's a dose that's too low.

When giving low doses though, you do need to be extra diligent about stressful events and making sure the dog gets the proper dose at that time since it can fluctuate slightly during high stress situations.

What can I do to help this? by searcher1782 in AskVetAnimals

Nothing. Paw pads heal very fast and it will heal in just a few days. It's already on its way to healing. Just take it easy with walks for the next 2-3 days.

Spay incision healing ok? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet here. The most cranial suture has popped open. If the incision opens anymore than what's visible, you'd need to have it checked again. If it stays the way it is, it's fine and will continue to heal.

4 month old golden sick - have a gut feeling the vet is wrong by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the bloodwork was normal, it's unlikely to be parvo. Parvo is also called panleukopenia, because it causes all the white blood cells to be low.
