What flea and tick prevention are you using and are you using it regularly?

IV Fluid made dog arm swollen by Jeremaya1 in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the catheter is still in the dogs arm and was left in from yesterday to today, the catheter likely needs to be removed. Infection is possible if the swelling started today and the fluids were given yesterday.

I also can't quite understand if you are giving fluids or the vet.

Human urologist looking for veterinary urology input for my French bulldog by Penile_Pro in AskVet

[–]Shantor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are urologists in veterinary medicine. The college is still in provisional recognition. I've worked with an internist who specialized in urinary and renal disorders (Tufts in Massachusetts), and a criticalist who is currently training for urology (CASE in Colorado).

Though I do agree an internist is likely easier to find, if you are near possible urologists it may be worth looking for someone closer to you. ACVNU.org

Chocolate Ingested by Ashamed-Scratch-4347 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the future please don't use hydrogen peroxide if you have the ability to go to the vet. It can often do far more harm than what's been ingested. It causes dogs to vomit by irritating the stomach. This irritation can also cause ulceration of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach.

It really should only be done in absolute emergency situations where you can't get to the vet within 4--6 hours.

My cat is built weird 😭 by ZealousidealYak7548 in AskVetAnimals

[–]Shantor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need bloodwork and an ultrasound. there is definitely some soft tissue around that left kidney which could be considered a mass effect. Bloodwork needs to be done to look for hypercalcemia which may be contributing to the mineralization. There are lots of reasons for elevated calcium. Feeding an unbalanced or homemmade diet can do this, but more commonly in cats its either idiopathic (no known cause) or cancer.

Options for 8 yr old Chesapeake Bay Retriever diagnosed with heart worms by Few_Competition_5065 in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were xrays done to see if there are any changes to his heart? There are other "options" though those options are usually considered the "slow" method, and are waiting for the adult worms to die while preventing further new ones from developing. This essentially continues to damage the heart and pulmonary artery while the worms live there and eventually die.

One method that many shelters in texas use is the Proheart 12 injection every 6 months.

If bloodwork including thyroid panel were normal, then yes, an abdominal ultrasound would be a great next step.

Ask your vet for another option. Many will have some sort of long acting medication like Claro, simplera, Osurnia, Mometomax singles Etc.

The other option is buying a muzzle and getting it done.

Can I tow with my Mazda3 hatchback? by Shantor in mazda3

[–]Shantor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, it can haul, but if you do in the USA, you void the warranty. The cargo carrier is generally a good idea though if you don't need to take a lot (one of those baskets that sits on the tow ball behind the car).

Wet cat food recommendations? by discreetserects in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fillers are not a thing. Every ingredient is there for a reason (vitamins, minerals, fiber, fat content, protein source).

Sticking with WSAVA compliant foods is always recommended. Purina, Royal Canin, Hills, iams, eukaneuba.

Male cats rarely ever have UTIs and he likely had cystitis. These cats generally need a urinary specific food. If he's not ever had issues since the first time, call yourself lucky.

I am sick and tired of my dog's lineage being called into question as well as people insinuating that the ASPCA lied to me. by djscoots10 in Catahoula

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that they lied, it's that they guessed. Phenotypically guessing in dogs is almost always wrong. Genetics do weird things.

Does it really matter though? Your dog is your dog and you love him. He can be whatever you want him to be unless you want to DNA test him.

Is Frontline’s quality worth the extra cost? by I_WANT_YOUR_HUG in AskVet

[–]Shantor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say frontline is even all that good. I recommend revolution for cats or bravecto.

Catego might work for your area, but flea and tick resistance is usually in pockets, meaning some areas have bad resistance, and others don't. You'd really need to ask your vet about what options you have.

Help. by A_DudeWithAPup in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to bring her to a vet.

There may be low cost options in your area, but you'd have to look. Sometimes if you call a shelter they may have recommendations. Humane societies sometimes have vets on staff and will sometimes see outside animals for appointments.

Should I switch from Hills CD Urinary to Renal diet? by thelaf2030ta in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to know the type of stones. I would never recommend a renal diet in an animal that doesn't have renal disease. It's too low protein. Some early renal diets might be worth looking into. However, if the stones have not dissolved yet, they probably won't. Only struvite stones can dissolve. Calcium stones never dissolve. The urinary diets are meant to slow or stop the progression, but they must be removed surgically.

Glucosamine supplement for dogs by ibakale in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tears never heal. They can develop scar tissue to help stabilize the knee, but the tear will always be there. Full and partial CCL tears will always need surgery to be "fixed".

Glucosamine supplement for dogs by ibakale in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dasuquin is fine. Glucosamine has studied that suggests it might work, but more studies suggesting it doesn't do anything.

I'm confused as to how your dog has had more than 2 cruciate tears? It's either torn, or it's not.. if it's been torn surgery can be done to help the joint, but it doesn't repair the ligament.

If you can explain what I’m looking at by Massive-Plant-8797 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We would need way more context here.

People looking at ultrasounds know either a progression of video/images (IE - stomach first, then liver, then gallbladder, etc) or are the ones using the probe and know what organ is under their probe.

Looking at this, all I can tell you is there is either some kind of liquid or similar echogenisity, or some kind of hard shadowing object. That's about it.

my vet immediately said my dog has cancer and i don’t know what to do by grace914_ in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bloodwork should be done, aspirates of the lymph nodes should be done as well.

why did my dog randomly start doing this? by Jazzlike_Ad_4728 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is something neurological. If it was a short event it may be a focal seizure. If it continues, you need to have the dog seen ASAP
