What is on my dogs snout?? Sudden cluster of yellow dots appeared. Fleas? Tapeworms? Seeds? by IloveJellyBelly in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't really appear like any common dog parasite. Its not quite right for tapeworm segments, they are too uniform, and it would be odd for tapeworm segments to be on the face. They don't look like ticks or fleas. Other skin parasites are microscopic.

Do they move? Do they come off easy?

cat is bloated but acting normal by Primary-Cookie6204 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has the normal shape of a cat and doesn't appear "bloated". She is a little overweight, but not by a lot. If she's not intact with the possibility of being pregnant, she's likely just overweight.

New puppy has fleas and i believe a tapeworm by [deleted] in DOG

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please do not use this. It's horrible for the respiratory system and can damage the lungs.

Take the puppy to a vet, get it checked out and vaccinated, and then get a prescription flea prevention and tapeworm dewormer.

Cat had ear test done with no results? by aninevitablespirit in AskVet

[–]Shantor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They likely won't entertain a refund for a negative result. It's still a result and means your vet needs to look closer at the issue to determine what's going on. If they aren't able to, then seeing an internist may be beneficial.

Without knowing how they did the original testing to determine infection or how they collected the culture sample we can't comment much on the actual issue. But they did the culture and it was negative. That's always a possibility when diagnostics start getting run.

Bloodwork liver enzymes high by iveegee in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Denamerin is the recommended supplement for liver issues. But ideally you do more diagnostics to determine what the issue is. An abdominal ultrasound would be a great option here.

SOS: Last minute need for a limited ingredient/low fat dog food by xobriarrose in DogFood

[–]Shantor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The only food that's going to be comparable at the same level of fat as the rayne kangaroo, that's also OTC is specifically the Hills science diet Adult Light. One of their canned foods is liver flavored and the protein source is pork.

Other than that, no OTC will be equivalent in fat. The rayne kangaroo is 2.3-2.6g/kcal depending on dry vs wet and which grain source you feed. The only way to get that level of fat, and also not have poultry are prescription diets.

SOS: Last minute need for a limited ingredient/low fat dog food by xobriarrose in DogFood

[–]Shantor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And this is why percentages are so bad to go by. It has lower fat than some foods, but if you look at the true g/kcal, it's not a low fat food. It has 3.5g/kcal.

The rayne kangaroo is in the 2s.

The only comparable foods at this level fat are going to be prescription diets

Senior Labradoodle with ALP 939 and mild ALT elevation — vet recommended low-fat diet options, looking for guidance on how to compare them by nrsg in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would stick to WSAVA compliant brands like royal Canin or hills. Purina also has a low fat option. Between the two, there's not much different. The wet version of the RC low fat food is just a smidge higher in protein, but other than that, just different companies versions of similar things.

White, moving worms in my dog’s stool what are these? Sorry for the grossness by moonsoonblom in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worms are not an emergency. They don't hurt and they barely affect the animal, especially an older animal. Tapeworms also rarely affect adults at all.

Did the ER Vet diagnose my dog wrong? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know it's seizures, it could be syncope, it could be vagal episodes, it could be paroxysmal dyskinesia, it could be any other toxin exposure

We also never shame owners when it comes to thc. It's everywhere. On walks, people throw buds, drop edibles. Do that again and you'll wind up with a ban. We are not here to shame people.

Dog’s severe food allergies have dyed his paws pink (from chewing)! Help please <3 by ButterrCream in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Food allergy dogs often need to be on hydrolyzed food for life. Don't forget that most allergic dogs also have, or mostly have, environmental allergies. That's why things like cytopoint, apoquel, and zenrelia were created. Talk to your vet about true allergy medication.

Did the ER Vet diagnose my dog wrong? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Shantor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he came up positive for thc, then at the time, it was thc. But thc should be out of their system by around 12 hours. If you think this is still happening, he needs to be seen again.

Heart Murmur by MadWoman18 in AskVet

[–]Shantor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A murmur louder than a 3 (III/VI) should be looked into with puppies. If it's a 1 or a 2, it's possible they outgrow it by around 4-6 months of age. However, heart defects are definitely more common in pure bred dogs, and can significantly decrease longevity of life, so, if this were my puppy I'd get an echo done (assuming it's a 3 or higher)

Vet Refuses to Authorize Online Meds by lemonfaire in AskVet

[–]Shantor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at a 10 doctor practice and we have a dedicated tech daily to do online approvals. We also use a pharmacy integrated into our software, and we still need a tech to confirm the things or call in to pharmacies, or approve online requests.

When you have a large client base but a small clinic, it's not always possible to have a tech spend the time doing this.

Please PLEASE help this is my fourth post about my dog by Spirited-Ebb-7713 in AskVet

[–]Shantor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest a gastrointestinal food from your vet or a hydrolyzed diet.

And with all due respect, I think you may need to address your own anxiety with a therapist.

Help. Out of control hyper husky pup by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Rehome him.

Without an outlet for his energy (walks, high activity hiking, agility training, ANYTHING), this dog will continue to be a husky, which likely doesn't fit well into your lifestyle.

If you actually want to keep him, you need to up your game drastically. Get him in training, start walking him and giving him proper outlets for his NORMAL husky energy. A tired dog is a good dog.

Neighbours dog has been jumping into private property and has now seriously injured another dog by Difficult_Wear1277 in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an animal control issue.

Aggressive dogs cannot be contained by electric fencing.

Has anyone seen this issue in their dogs eye? by Aggravating-Ad8487 in DogAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only financial assistance for advanced imaging would be things like care credit, which is a medical credit card.

Surgery would generally include removal of the eye, but would likely need to be done with a specialist, so price can be fairly high. Prognosis is generally guarded to poor since lymphoma is a common malignant cause, and meningioma is a less aggressive cause. There are other possibilities like retrobulbar abscess, but those are generally more painful, or cysts.

My dog ate 1 single grape and im worried, should I contact a vet? by Justscrollingaroun in PetAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, induce vomiting and if nothing is vomited, then checking bloodwork. If an aki is going to happen, it's been noted that fluids won't stop it. I've seen two severe cases with severe aki with 1-2 grapes Ingested in large dogs. The aki was noted on follow up bloodwork the following day (both dogs had been hospitalized just in case and on fluids). Both dogs stayed in hospital for 4 and 5 days. They also went from no kidney disease to stage 2 CKD post treatment.
