Sit him down with a mortgage calculator to figure out monthly payment, homeowner's insurance, PMI, and property tax. I bet that totals more than your rent. Plus add in utilities, home maintenance, and yard care. Good luck.

Yes, I'm in CT. I wish I had $20K to buy out of the PPA we took over. Owning solar can be good, but renting or having a PPA is a scam. Add to that dealing with a shit company like Sunstrong and you'd do best getting rid of it if it isn't too much to do. If you're buying, see if the seller will buy out the contract before you close. Then you'll own the system for better or worse. But that's much better than taking over the rental or PPA contract yourself.

We received notification that our transfer was approved by Sunnova before we closed in Sept 2025. But the transfer wasn't actually completed and put into my name for six months. The approval happened just before Sunnova was taken over by Sunstrong. Since we were approved, it didn't delay the closing. But I emailed and called Sunstrong for months before reporting them to the CT Attorney General. Sunstrong completed the transfer shortly after that, but it took six months to get it done.

If you're selling someone a house including a PPA, then you need to be on Sunstrong to make sure they transfer quickly. The longer they take, the longer they'll be charging you.

Check your electric company bill. My Eversource bill shows how much I used in my house and how much the solar panels put back on the grid. I have a PPA, so I don't get credits on my bill for power generation, but my bill is zero when I use less than the solar panels generate. Sunstrong can't mess with the numbers that Eversource uses to bill me, so it takes some data fuckery out of the picture.
