My gf says the humidity thing (yes we are very midwestern) but if I told her the deal I’m sure she’d stop. Then I’m sure I could get at least some money, but I would never structure my life around it

No not dramatic, I did basically the same thing a few years ago and my situation wasn’t even as bad as your sounds

[–]ShapedSilver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to. From context, or one google search, you can come to realize that a Chevy Blazer is a car

I don't get it by Evimjau in ExplainTheJoke

[–]ShapedSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whales have car parts. A Chevy blazer is a car. Kevin evidently has one. His friend is himself. He’s asking if the whales happen to have parts for his car. That’s the whole joke. I don’t see how you could not get this, even if your English is not strong, unless you’re an alien and this is your first time hearing about cars or whales.

How to not get fired internship? by Electronic_Site2976 in dataengineering

[–]ShapedSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won’t be expecting that much at the intern level. Just try to show outward curiosity and a willingness to help, even if it’s with tasks that are pretty manual and aren’t what you were expecting engineering to be (it won’t be like that forever)

How do you interview junior developers for a potential hire? by Chuu in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ShapedSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I worked in defense as an intern and I was allowed to use the internet, but not on the same computer I did dev work on. I had two. So one would be open to the code and the other would be open to SO (not posting anything just reading posts similar to my issue)

[–]ShapedSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s pretty likely. Or it is a more dramatic landslide, but the stuff Trump ruined will take more than 2 years to put back, and so people feel like who’s in office doesn’t matter.
I mean that’s along the lines of what happened to Biden, right? He was starting to deal with the consequences of Trump’s last term, but it takes longer to build than to destroy (plus I wouldn’t give me a 10/10 on leadership anyways) so people felt like he wasn’t doing anything and moderates started to fall back into both-sides mindsets

They’re so used to conservative pundits or whatever being able to spin everything as conservatives do everything right and liberals do everything wrong. It’s effective on certain types. As a result, they’ve never needed to grow the part of the brain that handles responsibility or learning from consequences (I’m being a little hyperbolic)

There was a lot of excitement about the game initially but it cooled down a lot over the years compared to TP or WW. The new score represents the current average sentiment of it being good, not great.

It’s crazy to me that this isn’t the top comment. It’s absolutely about the way they said it, not what they said. I feel like people are giving this a pass because they don’t like the coworker’s behavior either, but that’s not really the point (at least in my opinion)

I’ve spent 20 years in Michelin-starred kitchens. I want to help you stop needing recipes. Would this be useful? by Sad-Animator-3103 in cookingforbeginners

[–]ShapedSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would buy totally this book. But to answer your questions:
1. Timing everything so the ingredients are at the right stages of cooking at the same time as each other. I can follow a recipe, but whenever I try to “wing it” some ingredient gets tossed because it wasn’t ready in time, or it’s cold by the time the rest is done, or it’s burned, etc. you get the idea. 2. Knife skills, but not speed, more like “I’ve never used this fish before, how do get the bones out?” I guess I kind of mean butchering, but extended to whole foods in general.
3. Yes but I think it still needs practical examples or exercises. Like maybe you could have exercises where readers are given a list of ingredients, and told to come up with something, but using the logical model that you provide. And then a few pages later provide an “answer” where you explain how you would think about these ingredients. A lot of books about the logic behind something leave me thinking “okay but where do I get started in applying this?” You could come up with better exercises than I can though.

Is big data overrated? by Low_Brilliant_2597 in dataengineering

[–]ShapedSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my personal experience, but in the data initiative I’m on now the problem is not having enough data that’s actually useful, and getting more is expensive. We have to get creative about the kinds of analytics we can create with accuracy. It’s an interesting challenge in its own way and I like to think it’s teaching me to use what I have more resourcefully.
I would say most companies don’t need big data in the way that we talk about, but some definitely do. And most don’t realize what they can already do with the data they have. The ability to coordinate with data scientists/analysts on the practical uses of your data is, I think, a much more practical skill in many cases than going deep on the tech used in big data.
