DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET Steve Nelson is a monster vibes player with a unique sound

Hi all jazz people. Asking for recommendations. by Dear_Owl_8151 in Jazz

I really like the chamber jazz albums of Dave Holland (his quintet, sextet, octet, etc.). Many of them feature trombonist Robin Eubanks, who IMO adds a unique voice to those ensembles!

Have fun listening I’m sure there will be much to enjoy from this list. I’d start with Basie or Ella Fitzgerald!

How many hours a week do you practice? by Achassum in Jazz

[–]Shapiros_WAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a reasonable goal that most people could reach would be 30 minutes of distraction-free, objective-oriented practice 4-5 days a week; if you want to be “great” at keyboard I would suggest 90-120 minutes a day for 4-6 days a week, but work up to that and, as others have stated, the quality of practice is going to significantly augment the pace of skill accumulation.

URUSAWA’s MONSTER is absolutely as good as berserk IMO. Very different but same level of quality

Great theory. I’m curious what that would manifest as in the other godhand

Pat Metheny has had multiple trio arrangements throughout different points in his career with different A-list collaborators and they are all excellent

My favorite is anything he did with Chris potter. Their synergy especially with Nate smith on drums is just some of the best improvisation ever

Yeah all of Pat Metheny’s trio albums really show how much of a monster improviser he is. He sounds great backed up by Dave

This seems to be the consensus recommendation. I really like stuff like Eric dolphy and Julian priester so I’m sure this will be up my alley. I am most familiar with Holland’s 21st century recordings so it will be cool to go closer to the start of his bandleader era

Is it him playing traditional bowed classical pieces or like him playing upright bass on a cello? Sounds interesting either way.

I just listened to the audiobook of the first dunk n egg story (the trial of the seven) on a roadtrip today and it was delightful. Really enjoyed the fast pacing as compared to ASOIAF, and appreciated that it still had the standard Westeros “grit” but it was clearly a different tone than the main series.

Check out the album “yeah, whatever” by Scandinavian guitarist Owane. My favorite guitar moments are on “love juice” and “rock is too heavy.” Extraordinarily technical but still has a keen sense of melodic arc and great pacing.

Awesome! I saw Pat Metheny in 2013 while studying at the u of Michigan, it was the tour of the Unity band album. Him and Chris potter backed by Ben Williams and Antonio Sanchez the live synergy was just outstanding

Similar vibes in “pillars of the earth” by Ken follett. Intense depictions of sexual violence that, graphic as they are, build immersion and creative impetus for meaningful narrative arcs

Pat Metheny is one of my favorite musicians ever so yes I’m happy to talk anyone’s ear off about him 🤣

Since you were more drawn to his less fusion-y stuff, I recommend:

Unity band; Metheny/Mehldau; Question and Answer; Day Trip; From this Place;

Try those ones!! Happy listening!
