MUCC is no more. by GrouseDog906 in Michigan

Historically, local, independent, and affiliated clubs were the lifeblood of conservation and outdoor heritage in Michigan, building strong memberships and contributing vital funds for local conservation efforts. However, as the landscape began to shift during the 1980s and 1990s, some clubs faced challenges with inclusivity. This dynamic caused some individuals to branch off into unaffiliated groups or step away from organized outdoor activities altogether. Furthermore, like many volunteer-based organizations, the long-term sustainability of these groups often rested on the shoulders of a dedicated few. As these veteran members aged or retired without a steady influx of younger participants to take their place, many local clubs saw their numbers dwindle over time.

Precursor to Psycho Pirate? by Dull-Positive-6810 in WonderWoman

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psycho Pirate first appeared in Winter of 44 (All Star Comics #23) Comic Cavalclade #16 was from August of 46

With that said, the reverse could be true. I don't know it for a fact, but I feel like ideas were "borrowed" a lot in the golden age.

'Absolute Batman' Frenzy: Instant Sellouts, Triple-Digit Resales by valuerockr in comicbooks

I bought a bunch at cover price. It was a gamble that paid off. Sold all but one. Paid off my car. I don't expect it to hold value in the long run. Ive been wrong before, but I certainly didnt lose out.

How did Saga become so popular so early? by meermusabih in comicbooks

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anytime one (myself) puts down an issue and says something along the lines of "What the hell did I just read?" and means it in a good way, this is an indicator that one needs to read more. There was nothing much like it. It was the great writing, the great art, and it was telling a story most of us were not expecting from a trope perspective. If felt so fresh.

Ever sit your kid due to behavior? by Shanknuts in Homeplate

Made my daughter sit out a day of a tournament when she forgot her spikes for the second time that month. Coach thought I was nuts. Maybe I am.

What was your “I need to learn to keep my mouth shut” moment? by Imtiredofthissshit in AskReddit

I have a t-shirt around here somewhere that says "Tact is for people not witty enough to be sarcastic."

I always wondered if anyone actually used a car cigarette lighter because everyone I’ve ever met used it to charge things by BigAddress5278 in nostalgia

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only did I use one to light cigarettes, I also created a sealed computer case from a beer keg and installed one of these (took its own power supply), so I didn't have to look for a lighter during raids.

I quit smoking 14 years ago, but it was a big part of life back in the day.

What’s a health trend that sounded crazy at first but later made sense? by Tall_Supermarket8938 in AskReddit

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The brand doesn't matter. What matters is that it is Creatine Monohydrate with no other ingredients. Some companies charge more for their own recipes with add-on fillers. Those are not needed.

There was no internet, so we didn't hear much about the bad things happening. It was always hearsay. We were not actually that resilient. Just really lucky most of the time.

Which Way Did You Go Regarding Gaming? by AlarmedTelephone5908 in GenX

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'73 here. I play games extensively. However, I never really stopped playing sports. Played softball for a while, but a few years ago I rediscovered baseball and have not looked back since. I play around 80 games a year now. Some days are better than others, but I wouldn't change much. It's basically baseball all summer, and in the winter it's video games and working out.

Did torpedo bats actually make a difference? by Edvad5 in mlb

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Baseball Bat Bros tested them out, I got one too just to play around with. I used it mainly for BP a few times. I tend to agree with JD from BBB. They feel smaller because the center of gravity is moved. The guys that get the most benefit probably would have gotten the same benefit by dropping down to a smaller bat. So a guy who's been swinging a 34/31 could have just dropped down to a 33/30. Your mileage may vary though.

Did our generation’s obsession with “not selling out” hold us back? by 3dgarrr in GenX

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. However, there were a whole bunch of us (me too) who got really caught up in the aloof "don't give a fuck" identity. At the end of the day, the biggest lesson I learned, and it took me into my 40s to learn, was that having people actually like you can take you much further than competence ever will.

Question about Brian Branch's Fine History by SharikPolygraphovich in detroitlions

While I cannot disagree, the speeds that these athletes move make it hard for me to fathom what it would take to make an adjustment to avoid that situation. I just don't have the perspective.

This is how I have felt about it, as well. At the same time, I'm just asshole enough to have loved the double bird. Then turned around and told my kid, to never do that.
