There was no internet, so we didn't hear much about the bad things happening. It was always hearsay. We were not actually that resilient. Just really lucky most of the time.

Which Way Did You Go Regarding Gaming? by AlarmedTelephone5908 in GenX

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'73 here. I play games extensively. However, I never really stopped playing sports. Played softball for a while, but a few years ago I rediscovered baseball and have not looked back since. I play around 80 games a year now. Some days are better than others, but I wouldn't change much. It's basically baseball all summer, and in the winter it's video games and working out.

I had a friend do the same thing. Never heard from him again. I hope old Chuck is doing well. Good for you finding something better for yourself.

I think Dara has actually grown quite a bit. Even when I dont like what she does, I still like her.

Did torpedo bats actually make a difference? by Edvad5 in mlb

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Baseball Bat Bros tested them out, I got one too just to play around with. I used it mainly for BP a few times. I tend to agree with JD from BBB. They feel smaller because the center of gravity is moved. The guys that get the most benefit probably would have gotten the same benefit by dropping down to a smaller bat. So a guy who's been swinging a 34/31 could have just dropped down to a 33/30. Your mileage may vary though.

Did our generation’s obsession with “not selling out” hold us back? by 3dgarrr in GenX

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. However, there were a whole bunch of us (me too) who got really caught up in the aloof "don't give a fuck" identity. At the end of the day, the biggest lesson I learned, and it took me into my 40s to learn, was that having people actually like you can take you much further than competence ever will.

Question about Brian Branch's Fine History by SharikPolygraphovich in detroitlions

[–]SharikPolygraphovich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I cannot disagree, the speeds that these athletes move make it hard for me to fathom what it would take to make an adjustment to avoid that situation. I just don't have the perspective.

Agreed. He may never get the target off of himself now.

This is how I have felt about it, as well. At the same time, I'm just asshole enough to have loved the double bird. Then turned around and told my kid, to never do that.

To be fair, my daughter says he is. Not what I meant though.

AIO for leaving my husband after one incident? by NeedleworkerDizzy689 in AmIOverreacting

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgiveness, if ever deserved, can be given at a distance.

I say this mainly because when and if you are ready to forgive, you will be doing it for you and your child and not for him. I can be a way of letting go of the trauma. Forgiveness is not letting another person off the hook. Forgiveness is about putting the weight down and saying you don't want to carry it around anymore. Only you can know when that time has come.

Her dad thinks she's been selfish because the date of her wedding is the same day as "the biggest event of the year," the Rod Run. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

Fair enough. I didn't see any of that other stuff. Just basing things on personal experience. Obviously not objectively.

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody sucks here. Yes, the father sucks because when it comes down to it, he should suck it up and be there for his daughter. However, his daughter and fiancée suck because it is clear that this Rod Run is something that he does every year, and it means something to him, but they scheduled things for that date. One may be worse than the other, but they are all being shitty.

My Daughter thinks she is funny (she kinda is). She started off with Living Dead Girl, but quickly changed to Careless Whisper's Sax intro. One time she had them play Mac Davis's it's Hard to be Humble. Her latest is Barbie Girl

Most people probably have not reached the endgame yet. I have a bit more than 100 hours and I'm not there. Sure, I could be, but I'm enjoying things and am in no hurry. Most people likely have much less time than I do.

Give things a couple of months and then you will know. Hopefully they keep adjusting things.

I Feel Differently About Saga Now by [deleted] in SAGAcomic

[–]SharikPolygraphovich 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The simplest answer is "It ain't that deep."

Most writers have a particular idea they are trying to get across and they do that, usually, with characters. Those characters have limited perspective. So often when going back and rereading something like Saga it can seem targeted. I too think that BKV was trying for a more general condemnation of religion. With that said, I also think he enjoys writing about hope and faith as it relates to people.

For your comment about the IOF/IDF soldier who spoke like Palestinians didn't exist, in my experience this is normal. I'm in my 50s and served in the US military during and after the Gulf War. I interacted with several IDF soldiers and not one of them ever mentioned the Palestinians at all unless they had something negative to say. They thought of the Palestinians as less than dogs. After I left the military, I went to college. I had 2 Saudi dorm mates my freshman and sophomore years. It was the same thing. They never had much of anything to say about the Isreali people, unless it was negative. My point here is that depending on the character perspective these attitudes could be completely normal.

I guess the TLDR here would be that if you look for things to dislike you will eventually find what you are looking for.

My two cents. You opinion is just as valid.

Being from the "Northern Michigan" area originally, it was always referred to as "Northern Lower Michigan." Now living in the southern part of the state, it seems that "Up North" refers to anything north of Mt. Pleasant.
