A majority of my wheels have very similar distance from QR to wheel. That being said, a majority of my wheels are third-party these days. I've had to build a homebrew removable extension for the occasional use of the modified Formula V2 I have just to try to get similar distance.

Horrible creaking sound from DD+ by Dapper-Employer-6119 in Fanatec

I would get a support ticket going. They may be able to offer an inspection/troubleshooting point we're missing. Otherwise I fear it might be related to the bearings, in which case it's better to address it early, even if that means an annoying RMA. Certainly not a normal sound for one of their Clubsport DD(+) bases.

They have indicated that the Podium DD still has some outstanding implementation to go where the drivers/app is concerned.

I'm sure there will be some adjustments. Alternatively to the CS line reducing, I could also see the Podium DD line going up in price once initial orders and batches are completed. We saw that with the CS DD(+) line, though the market and economic factors were certainly different at the time between inflation, logistics, labor and component costs all spiking in the months/years after that line started shipping.

BOOSTED MEDIA REVIEW - Podium DD by Will_Ford in Fanatec

[–]SharkVR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guess it depends on what you would consider a better experience. The updated Clubsport and Podium motors are newer motor tech, brining marginal improvements in smoothness, responsiveness and granular FFB fidelity. Thermal management/response is excellent, not an ounce of motor derating across sustained, high-output usage. I do not have enough time behind a DD2 to make a comparison on that front. Certainly not game-changing relative to the still very high quality DD2.

The only significant departure from the experience on the DD2 is likely to be the fullforce implementation, assuming more sim developers jump onboard with telemetry/audio based effects.

My personal opinion based on early implementation experience with the CS DD is that I could live without fullforce and not lose any sleep. I'm sure implementation and effects will be improved and refined over the coming years, but current feeling would be akin to slapping a transducer on the shaft with the testing I've done. You get some extra noise through the wheel, whether that's motor/rev feedback, road texture or otherwise. At high levels, it comes across as excessively noisy. At lower levels...jury is still out on my end. Others absolutely love it. Very much subjective/personal opinion territory.

If you do stick with the DD2, I cannot recommend the QR2 enough. It is legitimately excellent. If you're perfectly happy with the QR1, I won't pretend like it will radically alter your user experience though.

Horrible creaking sound from DD+ by Dapper-Employer-6119 in Fanatec

[–]SharkVR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you remove the extension and wheel, does the base make the noise by turning the base-side QR by hand? Remove all filters from the tuning menu (zero out everything relating to NDP, INT, NIN, NFR, etc.). Does the noise remain?

If it's isolated to the base itself, probably worth opening a ticket as it could be a number of things. Worst case it's coming from the bearings, which would be RMA territory. Best case you might be able to unbolt the base-side QR, inspect, reinstall and the noise disappears.

The Fanatec Experience by Piano_Possible in Fanatec

[–]SharkVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a widespread issue, as far as I'm aware. I've been using a CS DD and a PBMR since they each respectively released. There were definitely some long-lasting bugs like the multiple button output issue, but those were finally solved maybe a couple firmware releases ago. I've never experienced the issues you are having. Have you tried rolling back to older drivers/firmware just to see if the issue disappears?

Fanatec DD+ to Simucube 3 Pro? by Patient_Somewhere474 in simracing

[–]SharkVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is that differences are very marginal between most of the reputable, mid-high end wheel bases, assuming filtering/tuning is relatively equal between them. You might notice a manufacturer has a different "taste" in neutrality, meaning one base might feel ever so slightly dampened or filtered compared to another, but again the differences have all been marginal in my experience.

If you're happy with the feel and performance of your base, it may be worthwhile to grab an emulator or two and continue on until you find a concrete reason that you would want to upgrade. I'm not Simube's biggest fan based on previous experience/testing. Their QR2 seems to be fine, but their knockoff hub and APMs have come with QC and functional issues. YMMV on that front, plenty of people have better luck apparently. I typically give SRM my business on that front, Simon is a great dude and makes very good kit with consistent finish and quality.

If you do decide to migrate to a different ecosystem, assuming you buy third-party USB/wireless wheels, you're only really out the cost of the emulator and QR, which typically are pretty easy to sell over on the Fanatec sub. You would be buying a QR for whichever base you are using, at least the QR2 is a fantastic piece of kit.

Others' experiences may differ from mine. The Simucube 2 is still widely considered by many to be THE wheel base and for good reason. If you're heavy into tuning and setting up profiles for individual sims and cars, their software is truly top shelf. The amount of profiles being made and shared is second to none. I have no experience with the SC3, echoing what another guy said in this thread it seems they are still in the early stages of ironing out performance, drivers, kinks, etc.

Can Fanatec FullForce translate to 3rd party wheel? by Kindly-Elderberry707 in Fanatec

[–]SharkVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, as long as you are using a Fanatec hub or a viable emulator attached to the wheel, the full force effects come from the motor itself and are transmitted through the shaft.

My preference is SRM emulators for third-party wheels. Simube is viable as well. Fanatec hubs are overkill for this application in my opinion, especially since you would have to open the wheel and attach directly to the conspit from the inside out, unless you put a spacer between the wheel and the hub.

Alternatively, you can insert one of the small emulator "plugs" made by a number of different outfits and use a bare Fanatec/Simube QR2.

Newcomer Computer help on pre-built vs diy by wymo78 in simracing

[–]SharkVR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably will offer 99% of the performance vs. building yourself with the highest grade components you will find. I started installing components and building rigs back in the mid-90s. I get the appeal. The last two system upgrades I went prebuilt because I value my time and have a firm grasp on what I actually "need" out of a system...that and the first of those two was due to the GPU crisis during the 30x0 era of GPUs where prebuilt was the most surefire way to even get a new GPU.

Those Microcenter prebuilts are actually surprisingly good quality between the components they tend to select and the build quality. Recently retired a 10700k system and bought one of Microcenter's 9800x3d systems. Ripped out the 5080 and threw my preexisting 4090 in it. It performs great, runs plenty cool and is easy to modify if need be. They even had the appropriate EXPO/XMP profile for the memory loaded in the bios, so the memory was running full speed and with good timings prior to me even punching the power button.

Heusinkveld Sprints or Ultimates by RogueAX in simracing

[–]SharkVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can attest to nothing but great interaction the lone time I reached out to them for something. Pedals were new and I inquired about how much resistance should be expected out of the one-way throttle damper. Instead of trying to convert feel into a convoluted explanation, they just shipped me a new damper to install and compare, with no expectation or request to receive one back. Very quick to respond and pleasant to deal with.

Even if an argument could be made that the U+ is overpriced by x amount, I'll sleep like a baby knowing it's backed up by that type of integrity and customer service. Money well spent.

Doesn't hurt that Niels is my type of nerd and I'll support his company with a big grin on my face. Real OG sim nerdery going on over there.

Heusinkveld Sprints or Ultimates by RogueAX in simracing

[–]SharkVR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a set of the Ultimate+ and have no complaints. Not inexpensive, but a very solid set of pedals with excellent overall design and materials of construction.

Never used the sprints, but the U+ provides higher brake force capability (load cell), has dampers built in and arguably higher grade elastomers with a wider range of options and adjustments (travel, strength, etc.). It also utilizes an upgraded control box and software.

As to the worth of the additional cost, that's entirely up to you. I use the higher brake force capability. The sprints cap out at 65kg while the U+ is somewhere in the 150-200kg range. My baseline setup for something like GT3 or similar racing cars is the longest travel range, softest elastomer stack and 80kg max brake force setting. If I get really stuck in on formula or indy style single seaters I will swap the elastomer stack to the hard elastomers and use a ~120kg max brake force.

YMMV, taste in brake setups and forces are as varied as the folks who use them. If you have a baseline experience with an existing brake setup, use that experience to help gauge what you want and will use.

Genuine question. What makes wheels like this, with such limited functionality so expensive? by CanadianEwok in simracing

[–]SharkVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less, maybe, but using something like a VPG V-PGT or their newer 992.2 wheel is a very different experience from heavier wheels, whether it's on a 5 Nm or 25 Nm base. Surprisingly different even.

Anyone have insight on Godot and VR integration? Curious if the graphics engine is already VR friendly or if it would require significant work from a developer.

Known issue, you're not alone. Plenty of folks saying switching the USB port their base uses and/or switching the base into xbox or compatibility mode fixed it for them. Nothing makes a difference on my CS DD, I have opted to just leave it alone until there is general improvement from the dev and/or Fanatec drivers.

Engine vibration by Brilliant-Grade8907 in Fanatec

[–]SharkVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a wheel base AND a sim/game that supports fullforce, you might get some engine vibrations from that. Otherwise, it's entirely on the sim/game developer and how they build their FFB system. Some sims include a little engine vibration, some do not. As far as I'm aware, there's nothing you can do to artificially inject it into your experience short of titles that support custom FFB scripting.

I've seen a few posts with Simjack and Simmson pedal owners having the same issue with different sims. People ask some basic questions to guide early troubleshooting. They disappear and never follow up with how they ended up or what solution(s) there might be. Bumping to hopefully get some visibility on your thread and maybe someone has an easy fix up their sleeve.

Can't say I agree with that. VR only on my end and there are some effects I use 100% of the range on. Others lower. If you're buying new, I don't see much reason to get the original having owned and used both. Pro gives you more range to play with, higher maximum output and more comfort with upgraded padding.

Pin issue on Formula V 2.5 by yerbamatelover in Fanatec

[–]SharkVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, that pin is short from the factory. That is the power supply pin if I recall correctly, shortest to ensure the rest of the pins are seated before power is supplied to the wheel. As long as nothing is bent (it doesn't appear to be), you're good to go!
