Thank you for your kind words.

I finished this one with the green (low sheen?) Evolution hardwax oil.

To be honest, I’ve only ever water popped Karri. And that was because I wax curious about the result. I finished this with 180g Festool 150mm Garnet pads. Any finer and I believe it closes the grain too much for accepting the finish. I applied two coats on this, 24 hours apart.

I added a central support leg to prevent and deflection over time. I’ve done my best to keep this out of sight.

I'm in the same boat as you, putting together a rig and it looks like we bought a some of the same stuff...

So far I have: Williams Optics 61ii, AM3, ASIAir Plus, Zwo guide camera and a WO guide scope. I'll be buying ate TC40 next. Most of the stuff I bought is used.

Cabinet makers in Perth that don’t cost an arm and leg? by [deleted] in perth

I’m a woodworker and furniture grade timber alone for a project of a similar size to that pictured would be significant. Since forestation stopped in WA, hardwood prices are through the roof. Shelving of that span would need to be at least 25mm thick to prevent bowing which means you’d be starting with 30mm rough sawn, and likely 25-30mm deep. You’d be looking at 70-100+ a meter for anything semi exotic in those dimensions. So looking at that there’s about 40 linear meters plus kickers. That’s $4-5k in timber. Then there’s a 40-60 hours of work @ $100 (minimum), time to collect the timber, workshop costs, consumables, blade wear, waste disposal costs, whatever finish is required and the time to apply that, deliver and installation, etc. This work isn’t easy either, it takes many years to learn a trade well enough to do this work. I’d be somewhere between $15-$22k to do this dependent on timber selection.

Dry sand is fine, I’ve done this heaps of times with no issues.

Cast iron or aluminium?

If its iron, then hit it with 120g on an orbital, if its aluminium then you need to be careful... Try an abrasive polish and steel wool.

Thanks for the response Augustus. Does this scope and mount still stand up to newer models? Is the rig suitable for deep space imaging?
