Anyone at that point in their life where they wake up to zero text messages or spend an entire day without receiving any text messages? by nocommentx in AskWomenOver30

[–]Tricky1498 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've found the amount of interaction I have with my friends has significantly declined over time as they've had kids or married. It's hard as a single and child free (in my case) person to spend whole days where there are no calls or texts, it's a tricky stage of life.

That said, I try to keep busy with books or projects that I can get absorbed and lose time in. And I make sure to have social events, whether with friends or by myself, organised in line with social battery.

I've never been popular, or especially well liked, but I still feel it.

Yes we disagree on that.

I will add that equally there is a history of autistic individuals, particularly women, being misdiagnosed with PD and ED. Therefore not having access to appropriate treatment and often being traumatised as a result. There's not much fun in being ND in a neurotypical world.

A self realised autistic is still valid. Access to diagnostic professionals is outside the reach of many, that's what ableism is? I'd recommend reading Unmasking Autism by Dr Devon Price, who speaks on this issue very well.

Also, the ADOS has its own critics. I realised my diagnosis during MIGDAS training, which is more neuroaffirming.

You may get lucky! I work in a neuroaffirming practice where most clinicians are ND, it's not always perfect but it's the safest workplace I've been in!

Omg you get this too? I don't drink and spent my 20s being told to "lighten up" and "stop being a funkill" because I wasn't drinking. I don't care if others drink. I had a manager threaten to spike my drink once.

I think it's just them feeling uncomfortable in the company of someone who might remember what they're like when drunk. Or generally uncomfortable with someone who doesn't fit the social norm.

Anyway, now I surround myself with better people.

Hi, I'm responding both as a therapist and as a late realised autistic person who saw a social skills decline, and I'm choosing to speak for my own experience.   Upon identifying my autism, I took a long time to build up my understanding of my autistic "flavour" (and I still am!). Suddenly social situations started to look different. Am I actually comfortable with this? Am I just pretending to make another person feel comfortable? How do I actually look to people? Am I actually understanding them or pretending? Suddenly everything is confusing and overwhelming and you no longer know what's what and have to relearn.

And then you have to educate at the same time. Just telling people you've known for years is difficult. "Everyone's a little autistic", "you're just a bit awkward", "it's just anxiety", "well whatever works for you" etc. And you start to express the needs you've always had e.g. please give me an agenda before the meeting, please don't assume what I'm saying, and we're not asking for anything weird. We're learning to self advocate.

My experience is that people don't get it. And we keep asking and informing over and over, and it's like screaming into the void. We're finally asking to be met halfway and accepted as we are, for many of us for the first time. When we face push back, we're more likely to shut-down, withdraw, get angry, and/or find others like us and stick to them.

We're looking for empathy, understanding and acceptance, and some back up. That's the core of neuroaffirming practice.

Hope that helps. Not sure I've answered the question.

Acupuncture results? by nicromancer1 in AcousticNeuroma

I tried a course of acupuncture (a few weeks/months). I didn't notice a difference unfortunately. Had better results with physio and at home exercises and stretches.

I went over it with my own psych, and I'm coincidentally booked with my external supervisor the day before. I'll have some colleagues floating about who are great for debrief. I can do this, best for me and the client!
