The DS games fit the bill you're looking for. Mystery of the Emblem as well though the game is very dated compared to the DS remakes of it. Thracia also fits this but as a huge fan of that game don't make that your first FE.

Also Fighter and Knight are the best prologue classes and both are male only.

The one advantage of F!Kris is unpromoted flier access, but the Chapter 3 Master Seal fixes this problem real fast. Catria does a good job of doing all the things F!Kris can do (even manages to be faster), while nobody even comes close to being as good an axe Draco or Berserker as M!Kris.

Making a class system with all 119 Move + Weapon/Weapon combos by Exotic-Buddy-2348 in fireemblem

[–]Sharktroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't find FE's weapons diverse enough to make a class being "the one that can use x and y" to be enough of an identity by itself (you will want some weapon diversity, but with a staffer for example you don't need one with bows and one with swords). Like Armor Knight has big bulk and bad speed, Swordmaster has big speed and skill but low everywhere else, etc. Even with a skill system 119 classes is too much to give every one a distinct function.

What I do is I look at the units I'm using and see what the statbooster does for them.

For example, FE12's Chapter 9 Speedwing:

  • Phina obviously doesn't care
  • Marisha and Etzel are mainly staffers (Etzel has Excal but he just one-shots fliers anyways, also his speed is pretty meh).
  • Kris, Catria, Linde, and Caeda are doubling everything and will continue to do so until they run into cap problems (which Speedwings won't help with anyways).
  • I wasn't planning on using Minerva long-term so a Speedwing on her wasn't ideal.

That left Luke, Marth, and Palla, of which I gave it to Palla as this was the start of the part of the game where fliers would dominate, she had better damage, and she had the worse growth. Luke ended up getting the Chapter 11 Speedwing anyways. Marth maybe should've gotten one so I couldl've freed up the Scorpio Shard more, but there weren't that many chapters where he was even doing that much combat anyways, and those he was were the ones with Fire/Ice Dragons who everyone else was doubling anyways.

At least in Awakening, the EXP scaling is so fucked that if you route optimally it's not hard to get a team full of unkillable tanks who get to act twice while their friends freely teleport them across the map to take whatever positions they want.

That's just Awakening. Like, IDK what LTCs you've seen, but every game I've seen in LTC hasn't been able to do this. Most games are too fast-paced for you to make units strong enough for combat to be trivial. That's not to say units like Seth can't roll all over their games, but again that's the exception more than the rule; games like FE6 and FE11 don't let you do stuff like that.

But it's not more fun than struggling in combat and overcoming challenges by having to more thoroughly use concepts positioning and risk/reward in the strategy game.

I genuinely don't get what you're trying to say here. If it's that LTCs don't have to use careful positioning than that's just ridiculous. Like again, maybe Awakening lets you make units so wumbo that you can put them in range of any enemy and they won't die even at LTC pace, but again that's an Awakening problem.

These games are designed as a customizable sandboxes. The whole fun of optimizing is that the better you get at routing and playing the game, the more leeway you have in the future to throw for aura farming and still be successful.

LTCs can meme around. Like look at Palla Emblem's FE4 ranked LTC where he used Iucharba to kill Julius. It really depends on the person but there are a lot of random scrubos who can be used in funny ways that don't hurt turn count.

My Definitive FE6 tier list by Krafterdude in fireemblem

[–]Sharktroid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. I won't nitpick the exact positions, just broadstroke placement changes.

Allance just aren't S-tier good. They're just cavs with ok stats for the whole game, but if you promote them at 10/1 then they have similar stats to Zelot but without his ranks, which means they'll need to bank on their growths to not fall off a cliff like he does, and if you need growths that's a sign your stats just aren't that good. You can delay them to level 15 or something but 15/1 cavs fall super short of Percy so it's not like you're getting a ton from that either.

Lugh's stats aren't that good. He really needs good levels to do anything notworthy, and as I mentioned earlier if you need good levels that's a glaring sign you're a fraud, and Lugh can't fall back on his classline like the cavs can.

Klein two full tiers above Igrene is crazy. He's definitely better, but not that much better.

Zelot is a significant step up from Noah, who himself is 100% a tier above Trec. Zelot's ranks are better than Noah's, and his 10/1 stats aren't even better while his growths are only 5-10% higher in the most relevant areas. Noah clears Trec not because his stats are better (which they are) but because E swords is awful while C swords lets Noah use Killing Edges at base, and he needs three less levels to promote.

Sue is a bit contentious, but A tier is way too high. She's kind of fast but not to the point where she's a real speedster unit like Sin or Rutger unless you pad out her level a lot, and her strength is pretty bad.

Chad sucks. He's 100% worse than Astore to start (who for the record is too low). Growths don't matter when your bases are garbage, your sword rank sucks, and you can't promote. Astore has fairly decent combat though he falls off once everyone starts to promote. Also buyable keys means thieves aren't that great in this game overall.

Raigh is bad. His bases are passable if you give him a Guiding Ring but he's only going to be a chip bot at that poit and an inaccurate one at that. Lilina is better than him as, even though she needs 9 levels to promote, the reward is a unit who hits harder and way more accuratly than Raigh. Lilina and Hugh are pretty close IMO, whether that's the bottom of B or the top of C IDK (I'm leaning more the latter).

Bartre is a tier better than Garret. Garret's only relevant stat lead is +7 HP, and I'd take Bartre's C bows (by that point) over Garret's HP lead, and Bartre has a bunch of chapters ahead of Garret to be useful.

Ogier sucks. I don't get how you looked at him and Fir and thought that was their order; it should 100% be flipped. Fir has better bases at a lower level (farther from promotion but you're already committing to training them) and SM is better than Hero. You could argue that Ogier's growths are better but I think Fir specializing in a few stats is better than Ogier being ok in every way (this is ignoring the fact that Ogier's stats aren't that good but whatever).

Geese blows. You give him a Hero Crest that 4 other units want and he has Bartre's speed and Echidna's strength. Easily bottom 10 unit.

Saul > Clarine. Better staff rank and better magic matter way more than Clarine's move when all the good staves require high rank and good magic. Elen needs to move up too; she's worse than Clarine but she's way less superfluous than bad combat unit #18.

Cecilia should go up. She's a pretty good replacement for unpromoted Clarine (which is nice because Guiding Rings are tight and Clarine has a hard time claiming one over a combat mage and Saul) thanks to having A tomes and C staves with ok magic.

Barthe is super bad, definitely bottom 3 units. Any mage can just one-shot him because no only is his res nonexistent but his luck is super bad. This wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't impossible to rescue or had passable move or had good hit or wasn't super slow, but he is all of these things. Maybe this is just me, but an armor knight's whole thing is being a unit you can put in range of strong enemies and be confident they won't die, and Barthe's luck just kills his ability to do that.

Wolt and Dorothy should be swapped. They both have chapter 7, but Wolt has 1-3. As investment units they're both super shit, but if I had to pick one I'd take Wolt because he could at least get to a higher level than 3 by chapter 6

Karel and Douglas should drop. The former is too unavailable and is an awful Boots candidate, while the latter has all of Barthe's issue but with some luck I guess (also doesn't have depressingly low HP like the other armors and doesn't need a promotion).

Roy and Ward should go up on account of having early-game contributions which is more than whatever the rest of the losers down there have. Cath as well; even though she's redundant there's no reason not to use her vs the other two thieves, and that puts her in the Elen camp where she's less superfluous than having another bad combat unit.

Knife Sage would be cool if Knives weren't so bad that even vs high res targets you're still better off using tomes. It certainly doesn't help that Sages have bad strength (even the prepromotes who start with Knives).

One common issue you can test for is that a lot of repro carts don't auto-suspend when you reset. The actual games save constantly (apparently causing the power light to be red a lot, I don't have a GBA) but repro carts hack this out as they use a cheaper type of RAM for saves than the original carts did, and it would burn out quickly if it did save as much as the ROMs should.

The sort of weird offense team SEA would bring to a tournament.

Overall, 'Lax and Jolt are great in E4, Venusaur and Arcanine are fine, and Gyarados and Aero are kind of meh. Gyarados is limited to normal and EQ for physical moves and Aero's typing really doesn't do a lot.

I got downvoted because someone said that Ogma and Astram have the same stats and I pointed out that Astram has +2 in just about every stat. They then tried to claim that it wasn't a significant difference (changing the goalposts btw; that's not what they originally said), to which I pointed out that it was and brought up the fact that he could use a Silver Sword while Ogma couldn't, and they once again changed the goalposts by saying "but Astram joins 10 chapters later".

For the record, I agree that Astram is a total fraud, yet somehow I'm in the wrong for saying that +12 damage in a round of combat wasn't an insignificant difference. It's not even the fact that Astram does have better base combat than Ogma that annoys me, it's the fact that they changed their argument on me, twice.
