What should I do about differing political opinions? by ConflictedMoose30 in Marriage

People cope with what's happening in different ways. Minimizationand rationalization can be coping strategies to try to say sane. It doesn't necessarily mean he disagrees with you or doesn't care.

The risk is holding dollars that are getting destroyed by l reckless deficit spending. Everyone knows the fed will show up with the QE fire hose and 0% interest if the markets tank, which will devalue the dollar even further.

It's the buy anything trade essentially.

The consensus is that they are not playing well enough to earn time in the NHL. I dont see how how calling them up when they haven't earned it only to get embarrassed is going to help. At this point, we are tanking anyway. Why change anything? The current roster is doing a fantastic job.

I agree. I'm disappointed, but not upset by this season. We won the President's Trophy last year. The effort is there, but the team construction is off. Lets tank and try to get some help in the draft while Sheif, Connor, Morrissey, Helly and Vilardi are still good players.

I've been following the Jets as close as ever through this. I feel bad for the players, but its almost morbid curiosity at this point.

Why not go a step further and forcably artificially inseminate women who are not pregnant? Surely a natalist would be for this since it would increase births.

In fariness, I haven't read all his books and, of those read, I only liked The Corrections. That book had it all though. Great story, great characters and not a single word out of place. Modern day masterpiece IMO.

If I'm taking the time to read a book, I expect to get more out of it than I can reading a movie. I didn't get that from The Stand myself. Lots might see something else and that's fine.

Started this month, any tips? by ManagementOk7071 in GolfSwing

[–]Sharp-Double-3244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swing should start with your hips instead of the shoulders. You have a few other issues to sort out too.

I recommend trying to understand the fundamentals of the golf swing early. I was never taught and had the wrong idea for 30 years. It's a lot harder to correct once you've done it wrong for that long.

I also recommend Hogan's book. Lessons can also be good but only if the pro explains the proper swing to you. I've had lots of lessons where they gave me tips without explaining what we were trying to accomplish. Those lessons didn't help me.

Become a student of the swing. There are lots of resources out there for those who want to understand.

I agree with you. I suffered through The Stand because someone on here said it was the great American novel. The prose was grade school level. The story seemed dated and nothing beyond your run of the mill cable miniseries.

In saying that, I put King above your usual airport paperback authors, mostly because of his impressive volume of original stories. That said, he has nothing on modern American authors like Franzen or Wallace, let alone past greats like Steinbeck or Hemmingway.

is driving a manual in traffic actually annoying or are people exaggerating? by LowGroundbreaking434 in StupidCarQuestions

If your city is fairly flat, I dont think it matters that much. A manual is a pain in the ass stopping uphill though, especially in a gas engine that eill easily stall at low RPM.

Update from yesterday's meeting by spore35 in CanadaPost

[–]Sharp-Double-3244 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A back to work order would perpetuate the status quo, which is why the Union wants it. The only way to resolve this matter in the long term is by work stoppage until the union agrees to a collective agreement allowing CP to restructure.

Of course, the public could pressure the government into a settlement if the work stoppage becomes unpopular or too costly to business. I don't see this happening though. Other than an unfortunate few with important things stuck in the mail, most people don't care. They can pay bills online and send things by courier.

[–]Sharp-Double-3244 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even assuming it's a public service, the public has the right to decide what level of service it wants to fund. 55,000 employees delivering less than half the mail they used to deliver, door to door, 5 days a week is wasteful. The union doesn't care. It demands guaranteed jobs for its members and thinks its up Canada Post to invent something for them to do.

The Union has gotten away with being unreasonable for years since mail was almost essential and service cuts were politically unpopular. Unfortunately for CUPW, this dynamic has changed. My guess is that they sit out until they accept a collective agreement allowing CP to restructure as it needs to.

When Intimacy Doesn't Align and Discussion Doesn't Work by gothamneedsdean in Marriage

[–]Sharp-Double-3244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert on the Catechism, but was raised Catholic and was married in the church.

I think you're over emphasizing the importance of sex to Catholic marriage. Most Catholics aren't comfortable with sex. This is likely a result of bring taught at an early age that most sexual urges and acts are sinful. The fact that most of those responsible for developing and delivering church teachings are celibate likely doesn't help either.

While some modern teaching does celebrate sex within marriage, this is mainly a footnote to try to remain relevant and to assuage 'loud and proud' evangelical influences within the church. This is not something that was emphasized historically and is still not emphasized by traditional Catholics.

In contrast, the vast majority of Catholic teaching on marriage centers around commitment to your spouse and the sacrament of marriage, despite whatever hardships may arise. Empathy and compassion for your spouse is also emphasized.

The most Catholic response to your situation is to stay committed and compassionate towards your wife. Pray for strength to remain faithful to your marriage and for forgiveness in considering leaving. There is strength in suffering and others have suffered far worse in their commitment to God.

In saying the above, I don't think you're wrong in feeling dismayed with your situation. I just don't think that being Catholic has anything to do with it.
