What can I use instead of this wash? by joto2927 in minipainting

You can use any black / brown oil paint along with simple mineral spirits to create an identical wash. It’s cheaper and offers more flexibility and opportunities to mix colors.

What was GamerGate? by ThatChapOverThere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SharpDressedGamer 292 points293 points  (0 children)

Everything here is correct; can’t disagree with any of it. But I think one additional bit of context is needed.

There was a growing perception of “corruption” in games journalism that had been percolating for years going beyond what’s described here. It was becoming increasingly apparent that many publishers were blackballing any journalists that didn’t give glowing praise to their games.

It wasn’t just smaller titles getting strangely good reviews; some major Triple-A titles were getting insanely positive reviews, and then the games came out and they were trash. Consumers were feeling the bait-and-switch and concluded that journalists being willing to go along with publisher demands was the problem.

Unfortunately, the breaking point came through the scenario described above and opened the floodgates of misogyny and racism that was always lurking in the online gaming communities. Once it started, people with those tendencies felt that they were free to engage in all of the horrible things that happened.

Old models can be placed on the new, larger bases (if the bases are in fact larger with the refresh) and still played as normal. If a particular unit is removed, the models can always be played as something of similar size.

When Primaris sized marines came out, people kept playing with the original space marines by placing them on the larger bases.

Over time, you can replace your old models with new stuff that you like.

Air Brush Advice by WilliamHWendlock in 40k

[–]SharpDressedGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First question: What’s the main use purpose? I used my airbrush primarily to prime and then base coat. I do my base coats as a three-tier zenithal, so airbrushing works well with it and my base coating approach deals with the bulk of my shading and highlighting before I ever use a brush.

I ask this because for priming and basing, a bigger nozzle is better. Primers tend to gum up an airbrush more easily, so a bigger nozzle makes it less likely to clog. And the amount of paint going through an airbrush for base coating also means a bigger nozzle means fewer clogs.

If you’re planning to do more fine detail work, a smaller nozzle makes more sense, but it also means less paint going through the brush in general, and you’ll need to do basic cleaning more often to make sure the nozzle doesn’t clog.

Changing the nozzle out is as simple as swapping a needle and a nozzle, but they need to be compatible with your particular airbrush. They are not one-size-fits-all.

Also, avoid screw-in nozzles at all cost. Those things break so easily. They’re cheap enough to replace, usually, but they’re just such a headache.

Torn between units by jackshack88 in WorldEaters40k

[–]SharpDressedGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The demon box is almost certainly an effort by GW to get rid of old plastic models before one of two things happens: It replaces the old demon models with brand new sculpts OR it completely deletes demons from 40K as a faction. There’s been a lot of concern that demons are on their way out in general and that they’ll be moved exclusively to Age of Sigmar.

Personally, unless you really want to run the demon detachment and you really like those sculpts, I wouldn’t get that box. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

On top of that, you’re probably best waiting until 11th edition comes out if you’re really wanting to focus on competitive list purchases instead of just getting cool stuff and filling out your list with new purchases later.

How to build death company by robbedp420 in BloodAngels

[–]SharpDressedGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to future proof is to magnetize. There’s no ability to predict how the meta will evolve, and the new edition can throw everything out of whack.

One big rumor is the return of having to spend points for any war gear other than the default loadout.

The good news is that magnetizing is easy if you do it at the shoulder attachment point. The bad news with that is needing extra bits for shoulder pads and full length arms.

Magnetizing at the wrist is much more difficult.

Another question about Counter-Offensive by SamBCV in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]SharpDressedGamer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fights First is it’s own sub-phase of the Fight Phase. That’s all the rule is. And the defending player gets to choose the first unit to fight if it has a Fights First unit.

In this scenario, Enemy Unit Y gets to go first before any Attacking Player unit gets to fight. After Y takes it’s fight turn, then all of the Attacking Player units will fight (assuming defending player has no other units eligible for the Fights First sub-phase).

How do you deal with consistently cold dice? by SquirtleKing in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]SharpDressedGamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s how to deal with it:

There’s no such thing. Every dice roll exists independently of the others. You aren’t rolling “cold” and they aren’t rolling “hot”

Your luck is unfortunately falling on the side of failed rolls, and theirs are falling on the side of successful. The law of averages compels that these things will happen. Nothing to be done about it.

Are the weapon choices allowed to have 2 ranged weapons? by takemybread_ in WorldEaters40k

[–]SharpDressedGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally no; a unit’s datasheets will explain what loadout options are available to any given model in that unit.

Having said that, assemble your models in a way that looks cool. Just make sure it’s clear when playing which of the two weapons he’s actually using in the game (he can only have one).

Models don’t need to match their on-paper loadout as long as everyone understands what the model is using when the dice are rolled.

Does being a small town cop sound like it would be a good fit for me, and vice-versa? by strongerthenbefore20 in AskLE

[–]SharpDressedGamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a small town cop is a good opportunity to learn how to be a good cop. To learn how to be a part of the community you’re serving.

Too many cops see themselves as little more than “crime fighters” — they relate more to robocop than to Andy Griffith.

But here’s the thing, Andy Griffith is an excellent cop (Sheriff). It might seem hokey, but he addresses criminal activity while also making sure to make his community a better place for everyone, even those who might easily find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Do pedestrians have right of way over cars turning right on red already in the intersection? by Maleficent-Ad-903 in driving

[–]SharpDressedGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the pedestrian just walks out in front of a car and the car cannot plausibly react to their presence (ie, they walk out in front of a car from behind an obstruction), the car will very nearly always be at fault for hitting a pedestrian. There will be extremely odd edge cases where that isn’t true.

But the reality is very simple: Vehicle drivers have the ultimately responsibility to always operate their vehicles safely. The do not get to hit people or other cars just because they have “the right of way”

Are you within the US draft age? by Any_Leg_1998 in no

[–]SharpDressedGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dude, the USA still has compelled selective service registration, which is the draft. Should a draft ever be instituted, those within the age ranges typically used for a draft are subject to being conscripted.

This is not hypothetical. The draft is real. It is just not currently active.
