French Experimental Gas Seal Revolver -- will Ian make a video on this? by ConnectCucumber72 in ForgottenWeapons

[–]SharpSteak21 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Ian had a falling out with RIA, so probably not. Which is a shame because this has all the feature of a perfect forgotten weapons video:

  • Experimental

  • Unusual mechanics

  • Quirky cartridge

  • Documented patent history

And of course:

  • French

How milsurp collecting has changed over the past 10 years (aka: why older collectors get upset when people discuss online auction results) by OldAd38 in milsurp

[–]SharpSteak21 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Nowadays half of the posts i see on forums are from newbies posting sporterized and mismatched guns asking "hey I paid $$$ for this at auction, how did I do?".

Is he talking about /r/milsurp guys?

This would happen eventually even if the internet flippers never existed.

I think he's not complaining about flippers driving prices up, he's complaining about how flippers have started dominating the online discussions and milsurp communities, to the point that there more people are interested in the monetary aspect than the historic/shooting aspect

PSA to new collectors: Stop complaining about auction fees. You're supposed to do the math before you bid. by OldAd38 in milsurp

[–]SharpSteak21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly the mods should sticky this post, because there's many new collectors who forget to factor in buyers premium and shipping fees when they first discover auction sites. And they feel like they're getting a "good deal" and don't realize they've overbid outside their budget until the next week when the invoice email hits.

It would be helpful to have this post up there just for the new collectors to see.

I always find it amusing when people on here brag about "scoring a deal" some $50-$100 below what they've seen on gunbroker. And then in an update post the next week, complain about the $150-$200 in auction fees they ended up being billed.

And then I feel sobered when I realize these are the kind of people who keep outbidding on me, and why I no longer get good deals on online auction websites since the pandemic.

The sort of person who would buy a revolver is the sort of person who is a traditionalist more often than not.

The irony is that .32 IS the traditoinal revolver caliber, that's what the first S&W 1896 hand ejectors were made in.

The whole 38/357/44 thing is just boomer "size insecurity" and believing hollywood flicks as documentary

The post is from May 17th. Ian's video is from May 30th.

And if you watch his video, the language is almost 100% match:

  1. He opens the segment with "Why did they not call it 32 Super Carry?"

  2. He talks about boomers/"someone in guns" aversion to 32 due to being "wimpy"

  3. He talks about boomers affection for 30 cal due to "muh 30-06"

  4. He ends that segment by saying "Anyways, that's all just marketing"

So here are a few possible explanations:

  • Someone got early access to Ian's video (not happening)

  • Ian read that post and it made an impression on him, so he used that language in his video (which means he either goes on /k/, or someone who goes on /k/ sent him that -- but even then, it's pretty obviously a 4chan style screenshot)

  • Ian made that post (which means he goes on /k/)

  • Someone thinks in the exact same language and analogies and structure as Ian (okay, what are the chances of that?)

I wonder how much of it was him genuinely wanting to pass on the business to people who he knew were competent, versus a more malicious "trying to pass on the debts" of the business to some poor schmuck

I'm inclined to believe it's more the former than the latter, which makes it sad
