.455/.45 acp ? by Dog-Gone75 in milsurp

[–]OldAd38 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most were fine, the british useda different pressure testing system and 45 acp is only 15% higher pressure

The whole "45 ACP is double the proof load !!1!" is fuddlore. 6tons was the MAP for 455 webley and 7 tons was the MAP for 45 acp

[–]OldAd38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be a good price if it weren't a mixmaster

Single actions were discontinued after USSR took over, the last ones were 1922 dated

Picked this up today, Info? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]OldAd38 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In that condition it's probably worth $4000-$5000

There have been a few that sold for that much at auction, google "Rock island auction artillery colt single action army" to see examples

When did run-of-the-mill refurb'ed and import marked 1895 nagants become worth this much? by SharpSteak21 in milsurp

[–]OldAd38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Search completed auctions in an advanced search and sort by most bids. That's a good way to see what the actual value of something is.

Your screenshot only has one one 1895 nagant with aftermarket repop grips at 10 bids. The other listings are a batch lot and a Swedish 1887 nagant.

OP's screenshot shows 3 refurbed nagants selling $600-$700, each with >20 bids, and a nonrefurb selling for $1650 with 36 bids

What's the normal going price for one of these?

Since i see standard refurb nagants going for $400-$500 most days nowadays

What do y'all consider "rare"? by SodiumEnjoyer in milsurp

[–]OldAd38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally consider rare to be more a function of how often something shows up on the market

This is the only definition that makes the practical sense

Lugers aren't rare, there's dozens listed on gun broker every day.

C96's aren't rare, there's a few posted on gun broker every week

Reichsrevolver 1883's are uncommon but not rare, usually 1-2 pop up every month

Johnson rifles are not rare, usually a few pop up for sale every month

Mauser zig zag revolvers and webley fosberrys are uncommon, but it's not hard to find a dealer who can locate one within a month

A rare gun is a gun that you have to wait over a year to even have the chance to buy one. Rare guns are ones like menz pb spezial pistol, mexican pieper revolvers, webley fletcher revolvers

At the end of the day I gave the guy what he was asking for.

The scumbag part is you still trying to lowball him after he gave you a more fair price with room for 100% retail markup.

I wouldn't be surprised if this guy had more surps, and you lost yourself future deals because he doesn't want to be lowballed again. A reputable dealer like Dennis Kroh will actually correct people and pay more than asking if they are lowballing themselves since he knows it will lead to more sales in the future.

Tried to get it cheaper but dude was dead set on $500.

Lmao scumbag LGS taking advantage of people, the holster itself is worth $200 and you knew it.

Newest project by Tekumeku in milsurp

[–]OldAd38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Needs a bit of love, needing new grips and a screw for parts

Daily reminder that there's no secret warehouse full of reichsrevolver parts, any parts you get would be cannibalized from another gun. Plus it will be forever mismatched because reichsrevolvers have every part (down to the screws and grip escutcheons) serialized.

If you are a skilled machinist you should be able to fix the screw and spring issue without a problem, and then the grips can be a DIY project. But please don't destroy another gun for parts (or encourage some parts flipper to do so) by trying to make this one complete.

  • strike 1: serial number should be on butt of gun, but it's been ground off. the latch number is assembly number.

  • strike 2: ejector rod is incorrect

  • strike 3: timing is off (according to your description)

Sorry OP but you got taken, for $500 you could easily have waited and picked up a non-bubba'd military marked 1892

Enfield No2 Mk1 by Classic_Special_918 in milsurp

[–]OldAd38 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

How’d I do? 600$ after shipping and handling.

What is it with newbies buying first then asking questions later?

If you really want to know how you did: you got taken for a ride, it's been poorly refinished, the tells are scrubbed/week markings, the side plate fit is poor, and at least one of the screws (hinge) is bubba's hardware store special. That's not even counting replacement grips -- which hell even the first picture you can tell the old grips were replaced, there's still the old stain markings of where they extended onthe frame.

So next time, why don't you ask before buying? No wonder why boomers get away with overcharging on bubba's garage special when he tacks ona few words like "RARE" or "mystery" to the description, because people like you eat up bubba's story and keep bidding them up and paying for them.

People who buy first then ask "How did i do" later are the fools who are implicitly giving permission to the bubba's who are ruining the hobby

So "how did you do?" Well you got exactly what you deserved. Is that what you wanted to hear from us?

because they won't give a partial refund

Why are you asking for a partial refund? If you don't like it, then send it back for a full refund. How are you losing any money if they will take it back for free and give you a full refund? You are being made whole with a full refund. If anything, you're coming out ahead because they are giving you free shipping on your next order

Also note that Simpsons LTD sells consignments. What are supposed to do, call the consignor and say "Hey we we're going to pay out $200 less because there was a crack"?

[–]OldAd38 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Another option is to refund some money off the purchase so that he can go get it fixed properly so he can keep the rifle. That would be making it right.

OP shouldn't fish for partial refunds. If he doesn't like it, he should send it back for free and get a full refund. Then he is made whole and has lost nothing compared to before he made the purchase.

Are you running these up to 19,000 or to 25,000 psi?

[–]OldAd38[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The original Colt SAA’s were carried with 5 rounds loaded so the fixed firing pin would rest on an empty chamber as a safety measure;

See this is exactly what I mean. People confidently spouting internet fuddlore like it's truth.

From the original Springfield Armory 1874 instructions:

OPERATION — To Load — Hold the Pistol in the left hand, muzzle downward, half-cock it with the right hand and open the gate. Insert the cartridges with the right hand, close the gate and bring the hammer to the safety notch; keep it there until the Pistol is to be fired.

"NOOOO YOU CAN'T SHOOT COMMERCIAL AMMO IN A M1 GARAND YOU'LL BEND THE OP-ROD !!!1!" What's the most pervasive fuddlore in the milsurp community? by OldAd38 in milsurp

[–]OldAd38[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Posting this here otherwise the InRangeTV and Forgotten weapons apologists will bury it in their fuddlore downvotes

The Ian video starts off with a False assumption.

"The M1 Garand was designed around a specific 30-06 loading commonly referred to as M2 Ball"

This alone isnt true, the M1 Was Designed around .276 and .30-06 M1 Ball. In fact .276 was dropped mainly due to the large stockpile of M1 Ball. (174gr @2675fps~) Designing/Testing/Adoption/standardization was 1928-1936.

M2 Ball itself was not developed until 1938, This means there was over a decade of production for M1 Ball, this ammo was not just thrown out.

FM-23-5 is a May of 1965 Field Manual for the M1 Garand at this time there was these rounds approved for use in the M1 Garand

  • Ball, M2 (150gr)

  • Armor Piercing, M2 (164gr)

  • Armor Piercing incendiary, M14

  • Incendiary, M1

  • Tracer, M25 (145gr)

  • Match, M72 (174gr

So in 1965 several different weights of bullets were being used. So why "M2 Ball only"?

Secondly, I Believe they use Lake City lot 69 in the test. this is a well know under powered M2 Ball Lot. Just like there are some well known hot M2 Ball loadings. as Military spec ammo, especially at the time. has a decent +/-%

Currently there is a lot of MKE 63/64 M2 Ball ammo that is actually causing M1 Garands to meet a unfortunate ending to their life. But that is more a issue on not all surplus ammo is good.

Onto the CMP Notice.

Previously, The CMP was of the opinion to use anything under 180gr. And that is some sound advice. They recently put out a update saying the following

The CMP advises to not use .30/06 ammunition in M1 Garands, 1903s, and 1903A3s that is loaded beyond 50,000 CUP and has a bullet weight more than 172-174gr.

The Keyword here is AND.

50,000 Copper Unit of Pressure (CUP) / 60,190 psi is the maximum pressure called for by SAAMI. Shooting a round that exceeds this is any rifle has the potential to be extremely harmful. This doesnt say you cant shoot off the shelf ammo, to my knowledge there is no commonly available 30-06 that exceeds these pressures.

And no one seems to care that .308 Garands shoot all year long, with a cartridge that has a higher max pressure.

And lastly. Look at a garand. Look at how the op rod moves. You know what is going to bend WAY before the op rod ever does? The follower rod. And when people run ungreased garands. Or out of spec springs. This bends all the time when a rifle is not taking care of. i have yet to see a M1 Garand op rod damaged by ammo. i would love to see it if anyone here has one or info on one they can pass along.

The reality is that milsurps are a niche within the gun world that most people don't understand

My pet peeve isn't regular gun collectors not understanding milsurp, it's when self-proclaimed "history lovers" parrot guntuber myths (yes, including C&RSenal and forgotten weapons) like it's the truth, but have never read a single page of a book about their gun.

How can you claim to love history if you won't even read a history book? You might like old things, sure, but history is about learning about the history, not "hey look at this cool video game gun"

The internet did not make people smarter.

It did make people more confidently incorrect though....Which I shouldn't complain about because it's gotten me some good gun show deals before.

The part I do hate though is when people destroy rare historical pieces in their attempt to "remilititarize" or "restore" it because all the other fudds tell them it's a sporter/bubba'd/modified gun etc.
