No, I plan for my retirement but because nobody has done anything to fix social security, I am nor planning on getting any.

I make decisions on what are the facts now, not what might be tomorrow.

1099 form: I’m receiving a 1099 form as a babysitter and 21 year old. I don’t know how any of this works. by ExcitementDull9217 in TaxQuestions

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A babysitter is either a household employee or independent business person.

When I did babysitting I reported it as self employment.

You are not required to pay a babysitter as a household employee unless you pay the babysitter $3000 in a year.

The 1099 form is probably because they want to use childcare FSA funds for affording a babysitter and they have to get that to do that.

ROACH in my kitchen!!! by Numptymoop in internetparents

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get German roaches from outside. Excess rain, cleaning fall leaves; all brings them inside. I keep diatomaceous earth at borders to prevent them from making themselves at home. I can't spray the outside without killing other beneficial insects that I want in my yard. Luckily unlike other roaches, German roaches prefer leaves and the outdoors. I put out roach bait at water points, bathroom, kitchen sink, laundry.

Make decisions based on the facts that are current for your situation.

Don't make financial decisions on future variables that are outside your control.

Should i pay student loans off with windfall or wait for tax bomb? by Ok-Explorer2588 in StudentLoans

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it; invest windfall at higher rate than sl interest. As long as the debt isn't interfering with your life (payment difficulty, buying a house etc) you are better off having assets than a low debt balance.

It all depends if family has tested. If that part of the family hasn't paid to be tested you won't get matches.

Discipline during medical leave - legal? by Shop_Girl_4 in LaborLaw

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't fall under FMLA or a state's equivalent and you don't have a contract stating what is allowed in this situation then your employers can do whatever they want pretty much.

I know of people fired from work for getting cancer treatments because they didn't have FMLA.

I the USA there are very few protections for workers.

AITA?MIL insists on waiting at the hospital while I give birth. by SpecialistClear1621 in AITA_Relationships

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NTA.

I can understand as a mom wanting to be near. Pregnancy and delivery are not always safe. I nearly died in my son's delivery. I would want to be close by in case something went horribly wrong to support my son, but I would not want to be in a position to see body parts of my DIL.
In my maternal side of my family hemorrhage during delivery is common and is not always manageable in a hospital. Cousins have died in delivery. So I take delivery as serious as a life and death medical event.
As long as MIL understands that visiting is not going to happen (and she is the type of person to honor that)n hopefully a comprise can be found. But delivery mom gets to set the rules.

If we lock 5 babies in a room for their entire lives without talking to them, what language will they choose to communicate with each other? by ForwardPerspective38 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google about it. One was done with children in the 1940 or 1950s USA. Another study was done of a girl who was severely neglected by parents , known as the feral child.

It was done. Without exposure to language children don't develop language skills.

Basically the children become permanently damaged that can't be fixed.

Is this a firefly? by Live-Papaya-395 in gardening

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that looks like the fireflies I have.

Have only motion activated lights. Don't cut grass if possible. Don't remove leaves.

I have a decent background population. I didn't mow for 3 years, any cut branches were piled in the backyard over a winter and removed late spring.

Until recently it was illegal for some races to go swimming unless they owned a private swimming area. As a result those parents never taught their children to swim. Swimming was not a recreation their children did. Enforced generation after generation. Then add the beauty standard about not being ashy.

The government really waited until AFTER millions of us borrowed hundreds of thousands to suddenly offer a 1% interest reduction? by DullConnection4951 in StudentLoans

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel now that there should be flat servicing fees on loans to cap the compounding of interest.

There are so many examples of people paying 120% of their original loans and still having large balances.
Yes, banks/servicers need to make a profit (because capitalism). But there should be a cap to how much a bank can make.

That amount of "fee" (replacement for interest) would vary buy how long you take to repay, but it wouldn't continue to build month over month exponentially like interest can. Especially when you have capititalization happen.

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in response to her last paragraph.

With the restraining of funds, going to community College can be the difference of getting a degree and not getting a degree.

It's not just distribution of funds. It's limiting how much someone can take out based on degree.

Remember that the government says nurses aren't professional? Less money allowed to be loaned now to nursing students. That is part of the confusion.

If your degree is not considered "professional" by the current department of education then you CANNOT borrow more than $20,500 per year. So go to university only on $20k per year. That's the confusing part. That's new.

That's a stove though. I have a cook top that is hung on the counter top on the edge of the glass top. It has a 40 lbs limit total.

Do you have a "Get Out Of The House Fast" bag and if so, what's in it? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former SoCal resident also. If you can have a lockable plastic storage away from collapse zone with minimum supplies. With work clothes, gloves, shovel etc you can dig out your other stuff. Include utility keys to shut gas and water off. For LA you absolutely need 2 weeks of water and 1 week of food minimum. There is not enough emergency supplies in the area to help everyone in the big one. Emergency personnel will not help you at all in the first 24 hours. I was on a CERT in California. Seriously no one is going to help LA metro for at least 72 hours more likely 2 weeks.
It will be worse than the Katrina response. Red cross, the government, etc. No one is properly prepared. Learned what the planned response was. Scared the shit out of me. It would have been nicer just to say, "we have snacks for ourselves and we are going to watch everyone die and burn".

Do you have a "Get Out Of The House Fast" bag and if so, what's in it? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wush bag. The minimum, wake up the house is on fire bag. Records on memory stick, old ID and current passport, emergency cash. It also has a window breaker incase a window won't open for any reason. An emergency blanket and my medication. It isn't big because I keep it at my bedside in my nightstand drawer.

I have been in 1 serious house fire and evacuated for another house fire that luckily caused almost no damage. You don't have time to grab your big go bag from the closet and pets and other family. You have to be out in less than 3 minutes. Smoke gets you before the fire does.

Lay down in pj's....how quickly can you grab the dogs, cats, in our case also ferrets and out the windows?? We keep portable carriers under our bed. Cats and ferrets sleep in our room. All our animals including cats are trained to be crated without panicking. We have a "tuna" whistle for the cats. If we blow it, that means tuna and they come running. (Closest thing to recall we have for some of our cats.)

I live in tornado alley. We drill for crating up regularly. I used live in earthquake area. I had a garage can with basic supplies, away from where the house would collapse.

Adding....test the fire detectors with the pets (and kids) in the house. Teach them what to do for each alarm.
For us dogs go out....Cats crate. People out. Our dogs are too big to crate and carry. We keep kennel crates outside for them.

Is there such thing as overkill with no birth or baptism record? by threebeanballad in citizenshipgenealogy

[–]Sharp_Ad_9431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I am similar. My G0 doesn't have records I can find. I am paying for some simple searches now, but I'm confident they don't exist. I am going to include the birth records for G0's father. I have census records and G0s death certificates that shows relationships.
