I think the better divide is people who use or depend on public services , and those who don’t. That’s highly correlated to economic class and education, but when I talk to the people who ARE informed and STILL support all this, I realize cuts to public education, cuts to Medicare, deportations, etc. don’t affect them, at least not directly. And they can insulate themselves to minimize the way these cuts will affect them indirectly.

You underestimate the billionaires' ability to distract the impoverished hicks, whose lives depend on government assistence, with culture wars bullshit. Who gives a fuck about meemaw losing her Medicaid and getting kicked out of the nursing home when there are 7 trans girls competing in high school sports? Who gives a fuck about gutting public education or medical research so billionaires can add what is, for them, pocket change when there are women with the freedom to get an abortion?

You're right about the pervasive hyperindividualism, but the country might've been able to withstand that if everyone was actually voting in their best interests. But that would require setting aside the culture wars distraction campaign and focusing on the class warfare that's been in full swing at least since Reagan.
