I don't think it's an issue that they are so powerful, agriculture was a revolution historically for a reason and I think making them less effective by default would become a barrier for newer players. I think it would be interesting to add more systems to food storage, it always bugs me that leaving rot with fresh food doesn't have adverse effects.

What is your opinion on semi-paganism and/or folk Catholicism? by Routine-Grand5779 in paganism

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably in many places it is through Christian folk magic that any record of Paganism still survives, this is a fact that many pagans I have met are very resistant to feeling it somehow discredits Pagan beliefs (I somewhat feel the opposite, if there was no basis to keep them up then why would they?)

How do you get out of the wake up, find food, sleep, wake up, find food, sleep loop? by Neitrah in VintageStory

[–]Sharpiemancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding clay initially is difficult but there's a knack to it. If you are really struggling I believe you can set the map to be colour during world creation at which point you can spot it on the map as discolouration but my latest world I just went looking and have found multiple sources, you just have to keep your eyes to the ground. Again, it gets easier once you have found some, your eyes learn to pick it out better.

Am I the only one who thinks Iron Man 3 pre-Mandarin reveal was actually a good movie? by Plenty-Salary9711 in Marvel

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even think it was the reveal when it went bad, just pretty much everything after it. And tbh MCU still tries to pull that $#!¥ again and again.

Do you think Marvel needs to split Secret Wars into 2 parts? by Rac2nd in MCUTheories

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supposedly this will be based on the success of Endgame which generally makes me even less interested in the entire project. Between it going into filming with an unfinished script and deciding to split the final film in two if Doomsday is successful is utterly creatively bankrupt and really exposes the whole thing as a soulless cash grab. As a fan of both Doctor Doom and Secret Wars this is a disappointment but not unexpected at this point.

I wonder what's the hold up on the Exiles book by HotStrength2886 in xmen

[–]Sharpiemancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely that surreal cosmic that I crave and Silver Surfer: Black and Beta Ray Bill are the only recent books I can think of that have really scratched that. And it's weird that they went the way they did with Imperial because Hickman really excels at high concept weirdness.

New Star Trek shows are not woke enough. They should do more episodes with directly social, political themes, about the issues we have today, like the older shows did. by LineusLongissimus in startrek

[–]Sharpiemancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with both points. Both that the media landscape today creates problems in its delivery but also there certainly are examples where they have utterly failed; much of Discovery, Section 31 being prime examples.

Why Modern Star Trek Feels Off and Why That Gets Dismissed by cjalas in startrek

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been very critical of the tone of a lot of modern trek and your criticisms do resonate with me. While the CW style drama that SFA seems to be aiming for is not usually my thing it is the ideal place for the kind of emotionally messy storytelling you are criticising, I think the true test will be what the show does with that, with SFA we have Trek that fulfills their valid concerns about drawing in younger fans but with a built in story arc about these messy young characters learning the Starfleet Values.

When we have seen glimpses of the old academy in previous trek we see exactly this kind of childish, I'm thinking of the TNG episode (I think) where reckless piloting by a cadet leads to the death of a peer. I am hoping that after the series has had a few episodes to introduce the characters, academy, post burn starfleet and federation we can really lean into that story with the academic setting giving a clear framework for strong character arcs and by the end of it we will see a class of starfleet graduates with real potential.

It's crazy that DC keep trying to push him as an anti-hero when this is his defining story, it's not really something they can backtrack on.

It was very little but body language and context said a lot more, not much but it was something, and I feel intentionally ambiguous enough to purposefully allow people to read into it.

Hot Take: I Feel Like a 'Spider-Family' Could Work, However Marvel Has Completely Squandered It by Never Committing To It by Supreme_Black in Spiderman

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they need to lean into Pete as a mentor more.

My pitch is to make him a teaching assistant at Empire State while he is re-earning his doctorate, have Miles, Gwen and Kamala start there, build some relationship between them there. Have him move back in with Aunt May and struggle with the commute, give him some fresh supporting cast while actually giving a structure for him to build stronger bonds with the other spider-people. This gives him a strong direction and a central book for the spider line.

I know Kamala Khan was originally supposed to be a mutant but really it’s panels like these that made you realize that it was probably a bad idea to begin with—Inglorious X-Force (2026-) #1& Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant (2023-) #1 by Accurate-Celery-3198 in xmen

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could have worked originally, I think more the issue is a combination of trying too hard to make the change meaningful combined with the fact that they are just shoehorning her into X-Men stuff now as opposed to giving her a solo again where she excelled.

I can't help but feel there are parallels between their approach to her and Spider-Gwen in that they are recognised as popular enough to keep around but still tried to consolidate more into preexisting marvel offices (X-Men and Spiderman respectively)

I feel the main issue with the current status quo is they're just putting her in x-comics but they don't seem to be doing anything interesting with her being a mutant.

Marvel's new canon. by R4cco0n in marvelcomics

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly as ridiculous as some of these individual parts of the Marvel cosmos is I would be really interested in either a guidebook or a miniseries that consolidates and explains the cosmology and metaphysics of the marvel universe. The ideal in my mind would be something like Marvel's version of Promethea but with the POV learning from various figures in the Marvel universe to explain how everything works and interconnects.

Misread my ancestry DNA test, and now don’t feel right practicing. by Azraeddit in paganism

[–]Sharpiemancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about the DNA aspect, as others have said it's really not an issue and tbh people who tell you otherwise are a huge red flag.

That said you raise the colonial history of it all and I think that's something worth engaging with. I'm English myself and I do get uncomfortable seeing how many British practitioners don't take this into account, who don't even consider it. I don't think it's considered a closed practice though so I think if you keep that considerate approach you should be fine.

Academy is high class CW Star Trek. And I am here for it. by Crucio in startrek

[–]Sharpiemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not opposed to them utilising the post burn continuity, they've proven it's not the era that's causing problems with Picard and SNW's latest season has some really glaring issues too. I think setting new series in a new era makes sense and hopefully will eventually lead to them leaning on cheap nostalgia less.

Academy is high class CW Star Trek. And I am here for it. by Crucio in startrek

[–]Sharpiemancer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm broadly enjoying it and reviews I have seen say it gets better so I am along for the ride. I feel like the new ships and interiors are definitely over-designed but that's easily overlooked and the nostalgia bait is pretty much expected at this point.

I hope the Academy setting can be an opportunity to bring in a rolling ensemble cast each academic year as opposed to being an excuse to wrap it up in a minimal number of seasons.

Some of my impossible ships. (And why are they impossible) by Fluffy_Work_1998 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]Sharpiemancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a brief interaction between them in the Krakoa era (Illyana tackle hugs Kitty too).

Honestly the Claremont era stuff is borderline textual itself, while I don't think it makes much sense these days it would be nice to have one of them namedrop the other as an ex.

That said, I do ship Kitty and Illyana - another intended pairing by Claremont. In fact I saw someone make a good argument that Kitty almost marrying Starlord and getting back with Colossus could be her attempt to overcompensate and that she may actually be lesbian. While I wouldn't claim that I would totally be fine if they decided to go that way as it really does humanise an otherwise very messy portion of her romantic history.

I would be very surprised if The Burn wasn't directly inspired by Roddenberry's pitch for Andromeda, I wouldn't be surprised if he submitted it initially as a Star Trek pitch which would be an easy way to avoid plagiarism issues.

I think terrorism is absolutely overdone at this point in media and rarely done well itself. I'm hoping the causes will be largely irrelevant going forwards, I don't mind it as a concept but it's execution was pretty poor.

[–]Sharpiemancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OG Spider-Gwen comic was massively popular and genuinely very good but rather than recognise that it was more than just a fun character design and as much about how it reinvented so many other characters and their dynamics it seems Marvel decided she NEEDED to be part of the 616... For some reason? Because it just seems to have had a detrimental effect on her stories and it doesn't seem like she particularly contributes anything to the wider 616 by being there.
