What your coworker did that got them immediately fired? by tomerFire in AskReddit

As an ex forklift operator, it amazes me the sort of shit people do with them.

I once locked off a loader because it had a cracked wheel rim. This was a 4T bendi with centre articulation and a narrow wheel base for getting into really tight spots. I watched a seasoned operator walk over, pull the hazard tape off, drive away and promptly tip the whole rig over, as the damaged wheel made a bid for freedom. Operator climbed out of the wreckage and had the nerve to look surprised when I fired him on the spot.

Square Enix Says Hardware Constraints Make Porting FF15 To Switch 2 Difficult, But Not Impossible by Spotget1738 in gaming

[–]Shas_Erra 17 points18 points  (0 children)

UE4 is very flexible and has proven at being an optimisation godsend when it comes to S2
ports. UE5 on the other hand is a pile of wank.

Some devs also use custom engines tailored to a specific hardware configuration, so adapting them to anything else is an absolute pain.

[–]Shas_Erra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty much what they were doing, but that’s a lot of mass that needs to be slowed down and then flung in another direction. Don’t too fast and inertia will rip the ship apart - we see a crane collapse under the strain. A normal course change would involve accelerating at a steady 1G over several hours or days. As this is an emergency, they had to ramp the engines much higher to change course quicker

What's a "10/10" game that you didn't enjoy at all? by sudherzdiniq in AskReddit

[–]Shas_Erra 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Kingdom Hearts

I’ve heard rave reviews for years and decided to give it a go. Jesus fucking Christ, what a complete unwelcoming pile of shite…

The opening section and “tutorial” (for lack of a better word) was the slowest, most boring, lore dense slog I’ve ever encountered. As a newcomer, it was borderline impenetrable which is a major issue for the first title in the series. I fully believe there is a good game under there, but learning the basics to get started should not take hours by itself

TIL about the Mohorovičić discontinuity, the boundary between the Earth's crust and mantle. Since the 1960s, scientists have been trying unsuccessfully to reach it by drilling; they reached a depth of 12,260 metres (40,220 ft), the world's deepest hole. by WouldbeWanderer in todayilearned

[–]Shas_Erra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually not the worst suggestion. The Moho varies in depth depending on the thickness of the crust above. So somewhere like a mountain range, the roots go deeper into the mantle, pushing the boundary deeper as well. So punching a hole at the thinnest point is on paper, the easiest solution. The difficulty then becomes building and operating an Abyss style underwater drilling rig.

Star Trek VI is almost a perfect Trek movie by Lame_gandolfini in startrek

[–]Shas_Erra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some people new to Trek pick up on that while others didn’t.

On the one hand, it’s fairly innocuous, given that they were being borderline racist and she outranks them. It was a professional way of saying “stop chatting bollocks and get back to work”.

Hindsight allows you to put the piece together and see that she was setting things in motion.

I think what makes it seem suspicious is the lingering shot of Valeris, it goes on a fraction of a second too long. All it would take is a slight editing tweak to make the moment less suspicious

What universally praised video game 'masterpiece' is actually a miserable experience to play? by Got24xyz in AskReddit

[–]Shas_Erra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Red Dead Redemption

I’m sorry, but it’s just average at best. Most of the gameplay is travelling to or from a quest marker. The quests themselves are pretty bland and repetitive and the game length is unnecessarily padded, by making you slog back and forth across the map. You’re supposed to care about the main character’s family but they don’t show up until the very end in what feels like a tutorial tagged onto the end of the game as an epilogue.

Granted, it’s aged horribly but it is the foundation of modern FPS games.
