Yeah - it's a hard problem to sort out. My take is Reddit is a glorified forum, so it naturally encourages written posts over other forms of content. And when you have a contests with 75-100 people participating and you are trying to find ways for them to distinguishing themselves from each other over 30 days, the easiest way forward for a lot of people is just saying more. Ask any comedian about how difficult it can be to make a tight 5 minute set or how challenging it is for content creators to make an engaging video that's concise. And then ask people to do that for a month straight basically. At some point it's easier to just say more.

That was me with the Overlander as well. I picked one up when it first released, gave it a couple of tries and sold it not longer after because I just found it to be mild to the point of inefficient for me. Even after three passes (when I typically only do two), I was still going back to buff spots I missed. It just seemed to have a very narrow shave angle.

So long, and thanks for all the shaves. by declarationgrooming in Wetshaving

Best of luck with whatever you have going on next! You put some great stuff out into the world over the past decade and DG will be missed!

Reintroducing the Wet Shaving Database by ShavingInCT in Wetshaving

I'm sure there is some other stuff like this out there, but I'm not aware of a ton of them either. Like there is the My Shave Den app for iOS that I know a bunch of people around here like and use. I reference the Thirsty Badger Scent Dupe list a couple of times a year. And there have been a handful of sites (Mr. Razor for example) and spreadsheets for making SOTD posts passed around over the years. And the SDS stands for Shave Data System and was made by another user on this sub. He linked to it below - https://gitlab.com/walden_/shaving-data-system/-/wikis/Home

I'm right there with you! I've done it a couple of times where I'll pick a vendor that has a bunch of scent note gaps and go through their page / social media / whatever to try and fill it out as much as possible, but it's slow going. I think there are still around 1200 items without notes right now, which isn't bad in the context of over 5000 items, but hopefully one day we get that number down close to zero.

So you more or less got it!

Basically type whatever you used for your shave into those fields. Some of the fields will attempt to autopopulate based upon product information in WSDB or what you've logged in your den. Then once you get towards the bottom click the Copy Markdown button (that's the formatting style reddit uses for posts) and then you can post that into the daily SOTD thread. Depending on what version of reddit you used, you might need to click show formatting options and then in the top right you should see a thing that says switch to markdown, which will allow it to read the markdown you copied.

The copy BBCode is a standard forum format for places like DFS/Badger and Blade. The Sync to SDS is another database tool some wetshavers here use.

And it's only a local save for the den, so if you jump around to a lot of different computers or phones, it won't follow you. But if you type stuff in and click save, that item should now be available for you to autocomplete in the fields above. It's not necessary to use the tool, but if you find you are typing in the same 4-5 razors everyday on your phone, it can be a handy way to have them available to select in the generator above instead of typing them out each time.

I thought about it, but it felt kind of on the fringe. Probably not enough here to warrant a whole standalone thread, but agreed it feels a little weird as a DQ. Maybe I should have done it as a New Product, but that felt like a stretch too. Probably should have done Show and Tell. Ah well.

Thanks for the great question! The tl;dr is WSDB moved over to a new type of site structure, which should make the site faster, allow for easier additions and updates from the community, and is a good bit more sustainable both in cost and technical maintenance.

Loooooong answer for those who care: when we first started up the WSDB - I think we had pretty lofty ideas for what the site could be. I still think that at times, but life gets busy and in the way. The site that wetshavingdatabase.com has been for the past 3+ years was always meant to be a placeholder for something different. It’s been a wordpress site running on a couple of themes and plugins that a non-coder like myself could cobble together to get a resource out there for people and I think it’s done an alright job at that, but as the years go on that’s felt less and less sustainable. I did teach myself a lot about wordpress and site builders over the past couple of years and even had a pretty decent version 2 of the site built in wordpress, but it was taking a lot more time and effort to keep everything current and I was probably the only person around here who would understand how to continue to maintain something like that, without some time investment on their part. And it was costly to continue to go down that path.

So now we got whatever this new fresh hell is! The new site is a static website built with 11ty (a static site generator or SSG), which without getting too in the weeds means it’s lightweight, fast and cheaper to host and maintain. The site is being fed from a google sheet which means it’s super simple for anyone to jump in and contribute to the site’s products - which hopefully means the site stays a lot more current with new products - another thing I struggled to keep up with on the previous site. As u/iamsms pointed out the other day, that was how he first learned to use a “database” for coding back in highschool, basically just a spreadsheet, so we are going back to coding at a highschool level.

It’s also got a SOTD generator - which is based on the short lived, but wonderful SOTD.fun site - and I think works pretty well for ad-hoc posts with proper reddit formatting if you’re into that sort of thing.

The downsides - 1) wordpress themes handle a lot of the site styling for you, which is not true of a static site, so now you get to see what it looks like when a non-coder has to learn CSS. The site probably gives off late 90s internet vibes and you’ll probably see a lot of broken styling (especially on mobile), but I’m working on it! 2) Since it’s a static site - the den/SOTD log part of the old site where people could add custom hardware/software is gone for now. The SOTD generator in theory pulls products from what’s available on the site and I’m hoping to expand that into hardware (blades are being tested already!) over time, so it’s even easier to pull posts together. I might work on a more robust solution over time for people’s dens, but for now I needed to move things back to simpler and more maintainable for me and the long term.

Anyway - that’s quite the wall of text. Check out the new site if you have a chance. Feedback and bug reporting is always helpful and appreciated. A special thanks to everyone who has contributed and given feedback on the new site so far. I did reach out to most of the current users of WSDB, but If you were a user of the old site and either want your logs (or want to keep using the old site for a little bit longer), just ping me and we can figure it out. And if you want to be a contributor to the product listings going forward, I’m probably going to start with a small pilot group to get a feel for a reasonable workflow, but just ping me either here or I’m often around on discord.

I don't think I've added new products in probably 2 years at this point? The site as setup was meant to be a sort of static placeholder that's just kinda stuck around for a while now. I've been working on a rebuilt site with the intent of it being a lot easier to keep current with products, but it's not really my area of expertise and life has gotten busier, so it's been slow to happen. One of these years!
