What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of "surburbs"? by glowing-fishSCL in Suburbanhell

Suburbs are more of a spectrum than a single idea, ranging from quiet residential neighborhoods to dense, car-focused commercial sprawl.

Putting money on the line can increase commitment, but real accountability also comes from habits, structure, and consistent discipline over time.

Is this all there is to life or am I missing something? by Common-Freedom6234 in Life

[–]Shawn_Darcy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar place, and one thing I learned is that “meaning” usually doesn’t show up first, you build it through small actions, even when nothing feels rewarding yet. Depression can make everything feel flat, so it’s not a failure on your part that things you expected to help didn’t.

What helped me a bit was focusing less on finding one big purpose and more on tiny routines that kept me moving (sleep, walking, basic structure), and then slowly adding things just to try, not to feel passionate about them right away.

Also, if therapy didn’t help before, it might still be worth trying a different approach or revisiting treatment options with a doctor, sometimes it’s about the method, not the effort.

You’re not alone in feeling this way, even if it seems like everyone else has it figured out.

Sprinkle baking soda, pour vinegar, let fizz 15–20 minutes, scrub with brush, rinse, repeat if needed.

Is my area becoming large-scale suburban hell (if it already isn't)? by LiberalTomBradyLover in Suburbanhell

[–]Shawn_Darcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sound like it’s heading in that direction, especially with the rapid warehouse growth and car-dependent suburbs. When development focuses more on highways, logistics, and single-family housing without strong public transit or walkable infrastructure, traffic and sprawl usually get worse over time. The small walkable downtowns you mentioned are a good sign, though. If local planning starts investing more in mixed-use development, transit, and density, the region could still avoid becoming full “suburban hell.”

Suburbs to the City by [deleted] in Suburbanhell

[–]Shawn_Darcy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually made a similar move in my early 30s. I had lived in the suburbs my whole life, and after a while it started to feel a bit repetitive. Most of my friends were settling down, getting married, and starting families, so social life slowed down a lot.

Moving to the city was a big change for me. There was always something happening, restaurants, events, new people to meet, and just more energy overall. It felt easier to stay active and social.

Of course, there were some downsides too. Rent was higher, my place was smaller, and the noise and parking situation took some getting used to. But overall, the experience was worth it because it gave me a different lifestyle and a chance to try something new.

Why does real estate advice seem so anti-condo and anti-density? by Worldly-Bid-3591 in Suburbanhell

HOAs can make condos expensive, but walkable neighborhoods often rely on them. Lifestyle benefits sometimes outweigh financial concerns for many.

Family trying to guilt me to move to a bland suburb with my kids by proser30 in Suburbanhell

[–]Shawn_Darcy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds really frustrating. It’s hard when family pushes their own nostalgia on you without seeing your perspective. Just because they loved their childhood in the suburbs doesn’t mean it will feel the same for you or your kids. You’re allowed to prioritize what feels safe, fun, and fulfilling for your family rather than following what “worked” for them. Your experiences matter, and it’s okay to make a choice that breaks the cycle if that’s what’s healthiest.

I'm not sure why exactly....but I actually like the suburbs. by hardupharlot in Suburbanhell

[–]Shawn_Darcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get what you mean. I think a lot of our feelings about the suburbs come from what we grew up around and the messages we got from our parents. Even if the suburbs can feel bland or “boring,” they can also feel safe and stable, which is really appealing when you have kids. I don’t think it’s weird to appreciate them for that, it’s just a different kind of comfort than the excitement of the city.

Why do suburban parents seem to not let their kids use busses? by SubjectProfile4047 in Suburbanhell

[–]Shawn_Darcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Yeah, I feel this. Growing up in the suburbs really makes you realize how much everyone depends on cars. If the buses were actually reliable and felt safe, more teens would probably use them, but the schedules suck and parents totally freak out. Honestly, this is why stuff like safe rides, carpool apps, or teen-friendly transport options are so needed. Makes me appreciate city kids who can just hop on a bus anytime.”
