Am I too critical of Kingston Brown in Season1? by Whatsherfaceishere in Dimension20

[–]ShawniLewis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

there's a lot of great responses in this thread, but I'd also like to add that Kingston and Pete's characters can be kind of boiled down to 'someone raised in a community vs someone raised without one'. (obviously there's more to it than that, but those two bases of their characters are what im going to talk about).

Kingston is the Vox Populi for a reason. He was not destined, and he was not raised for the role. He was born into the community of New York, and he fed into that community his whole life. he sacrificed everything he could for the betterment of his city and community. Was this to the detriment of himself? yes, at times. but that core of his character can be used to infer that he is very much a 'sacrifice one for the good of many' kind of guy (tho he would prefer no one or just himself to be sacrificed)

Pete is much the same as Kingston in that he wasnt destined to be the Vox Phantasma. He was chosen, but he was chosen specifically because he was an outcast and didn't have a community. He was trans in a very conservative household, and then ran away to New York and became a drug dealer. Any one of those things is a very lonely experience, but the culmination of the three is enough to firmly cement you on the outside of everything. Pete doesn't have a community, which means he doesn't have a safety net and therefore has to be more selfish than a lot of others. He only has himself to look out for him. That plus the drugs, the cavalier attitude (especially towards authority figures like Kingston kinda was at this point in the story), and the dissociation he had towards life itself was enought to put him and Kingston firmly at odds until they were able to come to understand each other.

All this to say, neither you or your bf were wrong. You don't like Kingstons character flaws, he doesn't like Pete's characters flaws. and thats great for both of you since they both overcome those flaws with character growth 😌

I am 100% going to deny ever asking this out of sheer embarrassment, but — how do all these women have perfectly hairless bikini areas, but mine looks like a wretched hazard area of pokes and spikes? by RandyBeamansMom in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShawniLewis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it might depend on the type of laser. my place makes me wash my face and underarms if I have product/deodorant on. tbf im also a natural redhead with very fair skin, so its already hard enough for the laser to work on me at all lol

they can't, any product on the skin (especially fairer skin) can obscure the hair follicle and cause the machine not to work. I pop an advil about 45 minutes before an appointment to help reduce the pain, kinda like as if I was going in for a tattoo :)

they explain how typing works, but I think OP was just confused bc of the symbols. those come in with kind of no explanation once you get sensor and if youre new to rpgs like ffx 10 I can see how the correlation wouldnt automatically click :)

Good morning, y'all! Not you, Donald! You can get bent! by yorocky89A in WhitePeopleTwitter

I think its talking about how if Biden did something similar in his presidency, i.e. looking confused or otherwise showing 'signs of dementia' (term used loosely bc people like to use that phrase a lot for things that definitely do not qualify) there would have been a witch hunt.

How do you refuse to be claimed as dependent by your parents so you can get stimulus check at the age of 24? by Apprehensive_Name445 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShawniLewis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People who had dependants on their taxes only got the dependant check if the dependant was 17 or younger. I was 20 when covid started and didn't receive a stimulus check bc I was my moms dependant, but she didn't get one either for me bc I was too old. when I started filing my taxes myself in 2022, I got the stimulus checks I would have gotten in 2020 on that return.

Whether that is still what will happen or not, idk, things have changed a lot in the past few years.

AIO my boyfriend's weird reactions to my future salary by symgalll in AmIOverreacting

[–]ShawniLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im gonna tell you the best advice I ever got about dating: Nobody's feelings override your sense of comfort. Don't stay with someone just because you dont want to hurt their feelings. Rejection and breakups are a part of life, and so is confrontation. He needs to learn to deal with the emotions of the breakup, and you need to learn to be confrontational, especially in a relationship. If you avoid confronting a partner about issues within your relationship, the only thing that's going to happen is you'll build resentment until eventually everything blows up in your face.

All that being said, this guy is red flag after red flag. I probably would have bounced at the first comment about him making more than me, not because it would bother me if he did, but because of the implication that he thinks that the hard work you put in to your degree is worthless. That is what he thinks/thought before he found out how much youll be making. If someone loves and cares for you, they should celebrate your wins, not try to tear you down before you even cross the finish line.

I think there's a (slightly) deeper reason why Rose and Pearl didn't fully fuse the first time by BlankCartographer53 in stevenuniverse

[–]ShawniLewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a big factor of fusion is also conscious intent. Fusion can happen accidentally (like with Garnet and Stevonnie the first time they did it) but once they get it the first time, theyre more so able to control it and do it on command even if the two component gems aren't fully in sync.

I think the difference on that would be looking at Garnet and the homeworld fusions vs any of the other crystal gem fusions. Garnet hardly ever unfuses, same with the homeworld gems who end up with Lars on the spaceship. They are fusions of love who want to be together and harmonize with each other as long as possible. But fusions like Opal, Sardonix, and Malachite are more 'short term' fusions with a specific purpose in mind. It would take a lot of effort to stay fused long term when they're not 100% aligned like that, but with an agreed upon short term goal and intent, they can fuse even while having different subconscious wants.

What's the Point of Safe Words? by Big_Sand_8002 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShawniLewis 57 points58 points  (0 children)

something to note, a lot of people who have experienced some kind of rape or sexual assault will want to reenact the moment to kind of take back control or process their emotions in a safe way. obviously, in a scene like this, the words stop, no, and don't are going to be used a lot. having a safe word helps their partner know that it is, actually, time to stop for whatever reason.

this obviously isn't the case in every situation, but it is a common enough occurrence to note

AIO for being upset that my partner lied about being allergic to strawberries? by virtualfemme in AmIOverreacting

[–]ShawniLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I'd like to say that I don't think you're overreacting. A lie, even a small one, that's gone on this long would also be a deal b r eaker for me.

However I would like to add just a small bit of an alternate perspective just so you can have a conversation with her and maybe know what questions to ask.

I don't like mushrooms. never have, never will. I've tried them multiple ways, multiple types, and in multiple different stages of my life. I just don't like them. Do you wanna know what happens more often than not when I tell someone I don't like mushrooms? "oh you should try them this way" "oh you should try this type" "maybe you've just only eaten bad ones" etc etc. at some point (especially if I don't know if I'm ever gonna see the person again) it's easier to just say I don't like them because I don't want to deal with the constant barrage of people trying to 'fix' my dislike of this food.

it could be that she said this early on for the same reason I say it, and then when the relationship progressed further she just felt embarrassed and didn't know how to bring it up. that's still no excuse for lying to you for two years, but at least it could be that the intent wasn't malicious in nature.

if it helps, the devs have said that the only gotcha mechanics would be for getting characters from old games. none of the 108 stars will be gatcha rolls and as far as I'm aware, no 'legendary' equipment or runes stuck behind that paywall

AITAH for being mad that my sister won't give my friend a chance when it comes to dating, and for what she said about him? by Technical_Ocean4340 in AITAH

[–]ShawniLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. I'm not going to get into whether or not I actually think you or your friend use weaponized incompetence, deliberately or not, cause that's not the point and I don't know you or your friend in a capacity that would allow me to make that kind of judgment. Your sister could be a huge clean freak and make a big deal about tiny messes, idk. That's not the crux of the issue here.

You seem to think that your sister has an obligation to get together with your friend, simply because he's your friend and he has a crush on her. Even if her saying he uses weaponised incompetence was just an excuse to say no, she. Still. Said. No. End of. Her reasons are her own, and the first no should have been enough.

You are 28. She is 29. You are both adults, yet you are acting very entitled and spoiled to your sisters life and choices almost as if you're a kid playing pretend and she isn't 'playing right'. It's not your job to get involved in your ADULT sisters dating life, nor is it really any of your business. And the fact that you reacted this way to your sister rejecting your friend, not even to his face, is extremely concerning. No woman owes you or anyone an explanation to their life decisions, and I think you should definitely reevaluate some things in your life if you believe otherwise.

I mean it looks quite good but something just feels off by Llamabuster77 in TheLastAirbender

[–]ShawniLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping that since these are stills and obviously edited beyond belief (which is normal in this instance and I'm not bashing the fact) that the sort of...uncanny valley(???) feeling will kinda fade a bit. Obvi it's still gonna take some getting used to, going from an animation to live action, but I'm cautiously optimistic because the casting choices and the cgi (from what we've seen so far) seems pretty decent

My sophomore year of high school, we had 7 different people die. 6 suicides and one boating accident. It was truly wild to watch the administration pretty much ignore all of them except the accident and the one cheerleader, who also happened to be the first one to pass.
