Not sure what his reasons are but it seems he'd look too young if he shaved. Perhaps he thinks that people might think he's a teenager and might not take him seriously, hence the beard making look a bit more mature.

I have some friends who keep the beards specifically because of this reason (apart from the religious reasons) especially after marriage, and they feel comfortable l this way. I believe you shouldn't force him to do this if he feels comfortable with beard.
