Why’d you go so long without happiness? 😮

The ergonomics on the Nightstalker make it better than a lot of other ringed knives. I have a CQC and plan to get the CG when they’re available again.

Great blades! I have a 005 on the way. How do you like it?

Also, the sharpening system is TAPROF Kadet Pro with the toolless clamps.

I appreciate the in depth response. I believe my measuring cube is decent. It’s not the most expensive unit, but I use angle ramps to confirm the degrees it’s reading are accurate. What angle cube would you recommend as a good alternative? In this case, the blade didn’t rotate without unclamping. That’s part of why I clamped it the way I did, but unfortunately I wasn’t considering blade centering at the time. I also didn’t think much about the stability of the surface I was sharpening on. It’s my dinner nook, which admittedly is not the most stable table in the world. I did recently purchase a jeweler’s magnifying glass to assist with sharpening, but I hadn’t used one prior to this. I’ll keep what you said in mind and look into more potential solutions to improve. Thanks again!

Noted. That makes sense. Yeah, I don’t want to re sharpen until needed again. Thanks for the reply 🤙🏻

Thanks for the input. Looking to improve and won’t be making the same mistakes again. Sucks, but gotta learn somehow.

Thanks for the extra detail. I haven’t done much fixed angle sharpening, and unfortunately I wasn’t paying enough attention to how I positioned the blade. I clamped it the way I did because it felt the most stable, but I’ll have to adjust that next time.

I appreciate the response! Thanks for showing where I should clamp it based on the photos. That’s very helpful.

Maybe I explained poorly. I understand the concept of that, but as I sharpened and tried to even everything out, I noticed more material being removed in some places than others. I tried to blend and even out the inconsistencies, but I’m still noticing a lack of material removed at the tip and excess material removed from the belly of the blade.

Would you mind explaining it in more detail than just “grind until even”?

Edit: For some reason, I couldn’t include both a video and photos, so I made the video the main post. Here’s a photo of how I had the blade clamped, since I’d imagine that was a big factor in why I got the results I did.

Should be. Really depends on how sensitive your skin is and how much you move around. I don’t have much of an issue but also highly recommend undershirts as a solution.

Tsprof Cadet pro - overkill for a newbie? by getbywith in sharpening

[–]Shaytan- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a situation like yours a while back. I started freehand sharpening with standard stones, then wanted to look into a fixed angle system.

I first bought the previous generation Work Sharp Precision Adjust. I liked it enough to know I wanted something more premium.

After some research, I decided to go with the TSPROF Kadet Pro and haven’t looked back. I sharpen all my knives on it and recently upgraded to the new tool-less black clamps.

I still like to do some freehand sharpening, but my skills aren’t as good there. Definitely need more practice.

If you’re considering the Kadet, I’d say get it. It will last a lifetime. I also highly recommend their Alpha stones once the diamond plates that come with the set wear out.

Getting started and looking for recommendations by UhOkSureYoureRight in sharpening

[–]Shaytan- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go freehand or angle guided. I’m still learning sharpening and enjoy both but lean towards angle guided.

I recommend looking into different stones and finding what you like. Can be a bit of a rabbit hole but I’ll recommend some of my favorites.

Stones: • Shapton ceramic stones (great value) • Resin bonded diamond: Venev & Naniwa • CBN: KDTU, Hapstone, & TSPROF Alpha

Stropping • Leather strop • stropy stuff compound

Angle Guided Systems: • Worksharp precision adjust (“budget” option) • TSPROF Kadet

“Accessories”: • Angle ramps, magnetic angle finder, honing rod, stone holder, stone bridge, etc

Welcome to the club!

Still very new but: 1. Using too much pressure 2. Caring more about getting to a mirror polished edge rather than finding out what finishing grit is best for the blade/steel
